Title: Hope I didn't F**k up...
Post by: grandpa nate on March 18, 2009, 11:25:42 AM
I just dropped some cash on a set of Icon Field Armor boots and am now a little nervous.  I have read that people are having trouble with the shifting because the toe is so damn big.  A friend of mine got them and says great things but then again he ride on a 1200GS.  Searching around on this site dug up some old posts but nothing more recent after break-in and stuff like that.

I live my A-Stars when riding but they squeak toooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much and I don't want to wear them to work and ruin them.

Any help/advice/ Etc would be greatly appreciated

Did you get the short or tall ones? If you got he tall ones I would sat you at least have some ankle support. There also not expensive.

Those are the only good things I can think of. I just don't think they represent what a riding boot should be like. There too much like a bulky work boot. Which I'm sure would be fine on a cruiser type bike.

I myself have almost bought them several times. Because they don't look bad and again there not $500. But they just look too heavy and not offer any feedback in my foot with so much boot around them.

Just my opinion, with no fhe

I'd have to agree on shifting. I think you're going to have some trouble.
As far as protection goes, the ICON stuff is usually pretty well designed, and darn sturdy.
Hell, they gotta be better than sneakers... or flip-flops...

IMHO, Icon stuff is like a riced out civic... It looks good, and looks like it would hold up but thats all it is... looks.

It took a little over a week for me to get use to the Icon Field Armor boots. Someone got 'em for me for Xmas. They really are kinda bulky on the top which make shifting a bit hard. Kinda hard to tell at first if you've shifted or not. hehehehe. I find it easy now that I've been using them for a while. I almost gave up on them, but I just didn't feel like using my racing boots all the time. Give 'em a chance to break in. you might find them comfortable like I did. I do like the ankle support they provide.

I took a direct hit to my left elbow by a semi with my Icon Superduty jacket. I had a small bruise where that hit. My leg is a different story....

I prefer silicone spray. Doesn't leave an oily residue...

well thats good that it worked out for you.  Personally id rather go with a more well established brand.  To each their own though!

I have the Field Armor Chukkas.

They are the first and only motorcycle boots I have ever owned, so I can't really compare them to anything.  I like them, they are kind of bulky, but I feel very well protected.  I did have to adjust the shift lever on my 620, though.  After I moved the lever up a little they work fine for me.

Its just going to be personal preference if you like them or not, but they will "work" with a slight adjustment.

I know this may be a far out idea, but...

How about leaving a pair of normal shoes at the office?

That is the plan even with the icons.  I just don't want to wear out the stars.

I tried the "squeak" fixes and they work for short time and then are back to annoying again.

We will see how it goes.  In the grander scheme of things $130 is not much to lose when compared to other boot prices.

Why not get a second pair of stars? Personally, I would wear the best boot I had, whenever I was riding.

You only get one set of feet. Wear the boots out.

i think it has alot to do with fit. all brands have CE approved armor. 1.4mm full grain leather is 1.4mm full grain leather, don't care what patches are on it.
if you get a jacket that puts the right armor in the right places, and keeps it there (I.E. it FITS... a lot of people buying icon stuff miss this concept) then you're going to be in great shape.

i have an icon jacket, and i love it.
that being said, the dianese jacket i tried on cyclegear is def. more comy. but it's also $749...

I also have some Icons (black field armor). they are well made but I did adjust my shifter by a notch to help with the height of the toe.
