Post by: cm on March 20, 2009, 07:15:38 AM
I'm signed up for the Lone Star trackday (www.lstd.com (//http://)) at MSR-Cresson on Sunday, 3/22.  Weather forecast is Cloudy, high in upper 70's, 20% chance of rain.

Would love to see some of you out there!

CM, Please let me know how the track day is run with Lone Star. I've heard they let some riff-raff through the door but would like some input from an experienced track day rider. Keep us posted and have fun. I like MSR! Too bad I'm in Asia. Japan right now, Bangkok tomorrow, then back through Tokyo on my way home!

Here's my short report for the 3/22 Lone Star track day:

Weather - a little too windy in the afternoon but temperature was great! probably was in the 70's all day!

There were the traditional 3 groups (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced), with the Intermediate group having the most number of people (probably about 2 dozen).  Novice and Advanced didn't have as many. Having said that, I didn't feel like it was that crowded so I guess I must be running a pace similar to the others.  I passed a few and I got passed.  One thing to note though - Intermediate allows passing on the inside, but with a 'safe' distance.  First time I tried a completed a pass in the back section with the series of 3 left turns.   I thought the track event was well organized.  I even had an instructor (who happened to be the main guy organizing it) seek me out at my paddock area to give me extra tips on what I had to work on (the tip was related to my penchant for squaring off the corners a little too much...says I have an opposite situation than most people...I turn in a little late (comes from my conservative approach) but also causes me to enter a corner slower than I need to.  We lost track time twice - once to a bike blowing an engine, but fortunately, only a very small portion of the track got the oil and it wasn't a factor after the clean up.  The 2nd was for a rider that fell on Ricochet...collarbone and bruised ribs is what I heard.  The long delay  according to 3rd/4th hand info (so may not be accurate) is  he apparently didn't want to use the ambulance that was on track and wanted the chopper service.

I think that of all the events I attended so far, LSTD has, on average, the most consistent quality of instruction.  Other groups may have stars, but also have some that I'm not quite sure about.  I am planning to attend every trackday they have that fits on my calendar in 2009, so you can probably tell how I feel about LSTD.  As far as 'riff-raff' they to end up in EVERY trackday organization that I attend.  If you subscribe to the higher fee 'filter', LSTD isn't the cheapest around, so that does eliminate some of the people who care about a $30 difference. I had a friend also join in their Novice group and he was happy with the event.

No pics at this time. I don't even think hart photography was there but there were some people taking pictures.

I might be at the AMS Track Day on Thursday.  I will try and decide by tomorrow afternoon (hopefully weather forecast holds).  There's also the issue that my Duc is currently being serviced so the only bike in the garage right now is one of the SV's (the one I purchased a little over a week ago)...and yes, I do have 3 bikes now (the Duc and a pair of 2nd Gen SV trackbikes). No better spare than another well set-up bike.  ;D

Maybe, but for a relatively minor injury, they can probably deny coverage.
