Title: Tyres
Post by: RED on March 20, 2009, 08:13:51 AM
I don't know if there is another thread with info on it about tyres (as Euro's print it) but if not then here it is. I'm looking for some great prices on some new rubber. Either Pilots or Diablos maybe Qualifiers to do some trackin with. Also will need some just regular ol dual compound stickies for everyday. Prices are at stake here. I want them delivered and cheeeep!

I purchased Michelin Pilots a few months ago from an online store with awesome prices.  I'll dig up the receipt and vendor info for you this evening.

Red, my $0.02 is go with what Bryant said, they are an excellent tire, and ship fast!  They are also a dual compound like the pilot power 2ct's so you will get longer wear on your center, with tons of grip.  And they're cheap.....

Hmmmm......wondering if a set of Ohlins would bolt up to the from of RED??? So, there you go, maybe find a not-so-used pairs of Ohlins for an ST4s? Anyone? Maybe go the re-build the guts route?

I have yet to finish out my Mich PP, so I can't quite comment on the 002RS yet.

RD told me about them.... If they are good enough for his 1098S on a track day running in Expert, they will suit me just fine

Post by: bryant8 on March 20, 2009, 08:07:31 PM
Yeah, same recommendation from RichD about the 002RSs.  I didn't like the Mich PP compared to the stock Pirellis Diablo SuperCorsas on the 848.  The Pirellis are just too damn pricey

I figure it's a good time to try out a new tire

doesn't matter, with your riding habits, you can swap "tyres" with your cruiser and be fine

red if your looking for a good grip but very high mileage i say the diablo strada. about 75% of my miles are commuting. 32 miles to 32 miles from. if you want a track tire most seem to love the mich's or the bridge's. do as much research as you can form your own opinion as to what fits you best and go with it. that's what i did. nobody had tried them so i said screw it i'll be the first to go for the extended mileage tires. i got sick of putting on tires every 3k or less so i tried the strada. however the popularity and price of them have went up considerably since i bought mine. does it have the same grip no but it gets excellent mileage and i don't ride as fast as some of these guys anyway. if they are supersport pace i am more sport touring. just a middle of the road pace.

you say fast, i say near suicidal (on roads that torn up).  Put me on some smooth pavement and i've got no problem running fast.  Carlos and I left you in the dust just the other month.   ;)

+1 on the tires RichD recommended. I preferred them over the stock Pirellis on the 1098S on the track. Even with the relatively harder centers I don't know that I'd put them on an ST.

FOR  REAL? 6500? Are they still sticky enough in the corners? My Michelin Road Pilots are feeling hard. I can't go into corners the way I want now that the bike is set up. I want tok know I can put a serious lean on them. That a goodly amount of miles though. I've thought a lot about Puurrrellis.

I see your reasoning Ron. The ST is a great 'Dual Purpose' bike. Sure it has the sport touring moniker, but if you take off the pannier fitment and stiffen up the suspension to track specs it can take some really hard driving. It's only got around 115-120 bhp but it feel nimble when it goes. It is definately more suited to a long sweeper @ +100 but I can't do that always. Simply not enough oportunities around here. So, If I get what you guys are saying is that the Bridgestones would be a good choice?

AMS can revalve your forks with Ohlins guts, had them do it on my S2R1000 along with Ohlins damper and shock... massive improvement. Or you can rattle Piper Performance in North Richland Hills. I know lots of folks who have used their suspension rebuild and re-valve services and have absolutely loved their work. I think Ron used them when he had some work done on replacement forks for his CBR900R. PM in Ron for feedback.

Piper does Race Tech upgrades, certified and such. I just had the RR forks freshened up, no kit.

AMS can put Öhlins kits in for sure.

one of the guys from the place i bought them from claims to have 8000 miles on his. they have been fine until on my way home from tyler today. about half way the rear end really started moving around in the corners. after the tyler trip it makes a little over 6800. ordering my new rear sometime this week. i put them on when i had 7700 and i know have 14500 and some change. just remember like i said i do alot of commuting and i don't think they have the same cornering grip as the bridgestones i had on before. i have a friend with the bridgestone's and i don't think he is gonna get more than 5500. next time i buy both i am gonna try the conti's just so i can have several different opinions from experience on all the brands but a few. i had them on when we were down on the h.c trip and george,  bryant, scott all rode behind me at some point they could tell you also they their isn't alot of moving around in the corners with them. overall for a high mileage sport touring tire they come highly recommended from me. excellent for their intended purpose but i wouldn't use them if i rode as well and as hard as will, tommy, ron, scott or some others. hope this helps.

7700 miles, damn
Title: Re: Tyres
Post by: calscrazy on March 23, 2009, 05:57:36 PM
tommy that first 7700 was two fronts and three rears.  at about 1700 i got a nail in both the front and the rear and had to replace them both. then after the replacement of both i put a rear on at around 5k and after 7700 i got sick of putting tires on every 3k especially when most of mine is commuting so i switched from performance driven tires to more sport touring.

Another option may be the Bridgestone BT-016.  That's what's going on my Duc when I get through the Michelin 2CT that are currently on there right now.  Very reasonably priced and sticks well (sticks well enough to be paired with a BT-003 DOT race tire on my SV since they don't make the 003 in the 160 rear size).

does AMS put user-supplied tires on still?  they did the last time i went to them for mounting, but that's been over a year ago.  though i'm still pretty unlikely to go that route... $50/tire for mounting and balancing is pretty steep, when cyclegear is 20-30 a tire

I don't know about AMS but I definitely trust the guys at Cycle Gear in Plano. They've done at least 2 tire changes for me in the last couple of months...

yeah...they've always been a good group of folks.  though i will say when i took mine in for a pair of pirelli rossos, they accidentally put a strada on one wheel...and i was headed out to the track a few days later.  i caught the mistake luckily before driving off.  that would not have been a good time.

nothing wrong with a strada!!
Title: Re: Tyres

just wouldn't exactly be oozing with grip on the track i think....  though i think the next tire will be a sport/tour on the monster...like a road2ct or something strada-ish

Well, checking on the availability and price it seems that MotoOutlet is cheapest with a price of around $250 shipping included for a set of BT-002RS' That tire is suppose to be their best for street/track. Afterall Ducati is running Bridgestones this year.

I wanna get may hands on a set of 002RS's... running 2ct's now... got about 1k on the front and maybe 500 on the back right now...

The qualifiers stick ok but you won't get shit for mileage.. thats what the zx came with and I needed a new rear at less than 2k (no burnouts or stunting, just normal riding for me)

I ran the Rossos and liked them.. same with the Supercorsas... but the mileage wasn't there...

I waited til Cycle Gear had their last big sale and got my 190/55 2ct... 25% off and then an add'l $20 off with coupon made it affordable.

A guy on anothe rboard gave a me a link to these guys...  http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php (http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php)

they seem to have pretty good prices, but I've not dealt with them so i can't comment on customer service or shipping

Afterall Ducati is running Bridgestones this year.

It is also the spec tire in motogp.

Spec tire for WSBK is Pirelli.  There are Ducs in WSBK.
