I think the whole thing was staged. A desperate attempt to get people interested in the series.

For the record though, Disalvo has always rubbed me the wrong way going back to that year that he crashed at Daytona and then threw his glove across the racing line. He was blaming the lapper but it was a pretty bad pass to begin with.
