Title: Helmet Communication Devices
Post by: bfoster on April 01, 2009, 09:17:06 AM
Hello all-

This has probably been asked about 1000 times on here and I did find a few useful posts about it but I am wondering if anyone has experience with the following products. If you do and especially if you have experience with more than one of them for a comparison that would be fantastic.

I really dont know which is better or what is different about these products. They each seem to offer the same similar features that I want... rider to passenger coms, bluetooth for phone, mp3, GPS, etc.

Scala Rider Q2
ChatterBox XBi Wireless Intercom with Bluetooth
ChatterBox GMRS X1 Bluetooth Communicator Kit

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try a variety of key words and you might find this...

Scala Q2 comments from 2 people and comments on Interphone by 1 person.

Privateer and evoasis both have a Chatterbox so maybe you can PM them and ask them what they think of it.

Note that the Scala Q2 does not have bluetooth 2.0 and therefore will not connect to most mp3 players. It will connect to some older phones but many of the phones are switching to bluetooth 2.0 which has A2DP so that you can use stereo bluetooth.

Wait, I just checked the Cardio site and they say that the Scala Q2 is bluetooth 2.0 now. Hmm... I could have sworn that my Q2 is not bluetooth 2.0. I went back and looked at the old webbikeworld review that I had seen when I first bought my Q2 and it says that it was a 2.0. I also went back and looked in my user's manual with it's abundant 12 pages  [roll] of instruction but there was no specs page so I'm not sure what version of bluetooth my Q2 is running. I think it's bluetooth 2.0 but it's not running the A2DP profile.  :-\

Seems that I recall recently seeing a review of one in cycle world but I can't find it now. I wish that I could though since I had meant to look into it since it did get rave reviews and didn't require any major installation.

I've been looking at comm devices too, and I've found a couple that haven't been mentioned much. (neither of these are for an intercom, just music/phone)

This one is specifically made for the iPhone.  It's just speakers and a mic.

This one from Parrot looks like it can do everything, and it has a wireless handlebar-mounted remote for changing songs, answering phone, etc.

The one from Parrot looks pretty nice... they just dont show how that mic fits into a full face helmet.

I always thought the Parrot looked good but it was still in development when I was looking about a year ago.

$200 is a pretty competitive price. They don't have any dimensions on the speakers though. They look pretty big too...  :-\
For reference, that's a BMW carbon fiber helmet that it's on. Not that tells you much, but FYI.

Yea I saw those pictures but it looks like the mic is on the outside of the helmet... does it fold under to go inside or am I just goofy? Well I know I am goofy, but you know what I mean.  [moto]

Yeah, I noticed that too. To talk you likely push it inside the helmet but when you're not talking it's easier to have it out of the helmet so you don't sneeze on it and whatnot  [cheeky] I do the same thing with my Scala (push the mic out when I'm not using it) otherwise it gets in the way a little bit because it's right there in front of my mouth.

After looking at the picture more, I think that the reason why the mic isn't in the helmet for the pic is because the unit is in the wrong spot. The mic usually needs to be right in front of your mouth and there isn't enough slack in the arm of the mic to get it around his chin and in front of his mouth.
