Title: Track Day Instruction
Post by: RED on April 08, 2009, 11:07:30 AM
Ok, I've just been informed about the particulars of the Lone Star Track Days instructional session with Andy Galindo. Andy is an associates husband and he teaches at LSTD events. He has agreed to take 1-3 people and give them personal attention and to tayler a track day to our needs. I will need to know who will be able do what date(s) asap please. Thanks, RED

The following is the info he gave me:

Hi Charlie,

I'd be happy to help you out; as you know I instruct at Lone Star Track Days, besides being a longtime racer, so it's always fun for me to help others out, whether they are first timers or experienced.

The way it works at LSTD is you sign up for a track day. Additionally you can sign up for:
LSTD riding school- $50
CMRA license school (racing license)- $75.
Advanced riding instruction w/ video $50 (Added this year, I don't think it's been put on the website)

I would recommend you sign up for the LSTD riding school (there's good basic information there), but you don't have to (depends on your skills, experience, and confidence).  Anyone enrolled in the class gets assigned to an instructor, and usually instructors have 1-3 students, depending on how full it gets. But if you let me know ahead of time that you're signed up- even if just the track day, I'll tell them that I'll work with you.  So, really, it's up to you whether you just want to do the track day or to add the class. Either way I will find time to help you out.

The next track day I hope to be at is Eagles Canyon on May 3, but it's not for sure. If not, like Sandy said, I should be going to the Jun 12 event at Oak hill. You should be aware that OHR is a small, twisty, and technical track with few facilities (was originally built as a go-cart track, but has been known as the training grounds of many top US Racers; Ben Spies, Nicky Hayden, Colin Edwards, Kevin Schwantz, among others!). And it is a blast. The other tracks on the schedule have better facilities and have more straightaways and flow a little better.

At any rate you should sign up as soon as you know you can go.. they tend to fill up way before the date.

I hope this information helps and that you and/or your buddies make it out sometime. You'll have a blast, and might even get hooked!

Andy

I am doing the LSTD Advanced Rider School at Texas World Speedway (College Station) on Friday, 4/10.

I'll provide a write-up and feedback next week after I get back.

I have done several LSTD track days and find them to be a quality organization with the most consistent quality of instructors.  In fact, I just finished the CMRA Rider School on 3/22.

Heading over to TWS this weekend for the first Provisional Novice requirements (Saturday cornerworking and 2 sprint races on Sunday).  I'm really just going through licensing right now and will think about how serious I want to do it for next year while I worry about improving my riding this year.  At the rate my schedule will allow me, it won't be until the end of the season until I can get my Novice licence anyway.

watch turns 1, 4 and 11 at TWS...

1 is coming off the banking and the transition is a lil iffy for some..
4 is a lil slippery, watch your throttle and your line...
11 (i think its 11) has a bit of a crest to it so if you're a little wide you're in an off camber turn... keep it tight and you'll be fine.

I want to get my yellow shirt so bad but the lack of a track bike and the time and funding to get said track bike or go to the lstd school and licensing, not to mention the 2 corner working days, and 2 prov nov races... i'm not gonna bother starting til i can finish it all

I'll be there. I'll turn in my registration to Wade soon and I have already made arrangements to work with one of the instructors (since I am on the same bike and race the same classes).

My brother and I are thinking about signing up for this trackday.  We havent done a Lonestar trackdy before.  Do these usually fill up pretty fast?

They do fill up, especially with the beginner and intermediate groups. They also definitely put a cap on the number of bikes per group so it's not too crowded.

Yes the classes do fill quickly and it's best to sign up asap. Do you and your brother want to sign up for Andy Galindo with me? If so let me know in the next couple of days. I am going to see if Andy can take 4. That would leave one more open slot.

Andy used to race Ducatis for a rather wealthy business man who had him on a 1098R. They man sold the bike and subsequently Andy has changed bikes from what I hear. I am not sure if he's even doing CMRA this year.

Post up your intent asap please. Thanks.

I also forgot that I promised an update from doing the Advanced Rider School with Lone Start Track Days last Friday...so here goes:

I  was at TWS with Lone Star and signed up for their Advanced Rider School.   LSTD is one of my favorite trackday organizers since they seem to have the most consistent set of instructors.  I will probably be attending their events the most, especially since a number of them are on Fridays before a CMRA race weekend and I need to learn some of those racetracks (like Oak Hill).  Since it was a Friday event (before a race), they only had 1 'street' group with the other groups really being racer practice.  Since I was signed up for the Advanced Rider School, I had to run with the street group.

After the morning rider meeting, I was introduced to my instructor for the day (James).  We discussed what my goals were (primarily to learn the track and work on getting a little bit more comfortable on it...didn't want to finish dead last, and some racecraft).  James had a GoPro camera and we would debrief after every session and go through video.  I also had speed/rpm/trackmap data from my Starlane so it was nice to go through that along with video.

James was very good and not only got me on the right line, but pointed out the areas where I was relatively strong and where I was relatively weak.  In the last few afternoon sessions (we got EIGHT sessions...though 1 or 2 were probably only half sessions...but that's a lot of track time) we even worked on getting me more comfortable with passing under braking into corners and we would swap positions 2-3 times per lap.

I will definitely be signing up for their next couple of trackdays. I'm planning on being at ECR and also their next event at TWS.  I think for both weekends, Ridesmart is also doing an event on the adjacent day so it will be good to get 2 straight days on the track and be able to compare instruction (I will be doing the Ty Howard school on the RS days).

So who's going to be there this weekend? I'm signed up and will be there (rain or shine).

I went to the website and registered online but still havent recieved a confirmation email.  Me being a beginner I'm not to sure about being on the track while it rains though.  I guess we will see.

I just found out that they cancelled the event due to the weather.  ECR gets very muddy and it has been raining quite a bit...

Did you attend the LSTD event?  There were several SBK's out there on Saturday, including a Desmosedici.

Didn't catch your post until today. If I would've seen this earlier, I would've came up and introduced myself.

Yes, I was there on both days.  I did notice the Desmo but didn't see it on track.  I was riding two bikes, both SVs and both with #185 on them. I was in B-group getting instruction.  I was paddocked at the last garage (furthest from cafeteria) and I think you guys were in the 2nd one.  I was about 2 spots over from the MV Agusta and the tri-color 1098.  I had a much better time on Sunday since I struggled quite a bit with my instructor having a different approach to the track than my previous guy.  Didn't realize any other DMF people were there!  3 of my friends were getting their Prov Nov certificates.

Is this you?

Saw the MV, didn't see the Tricolore.  But there were a lot more Ducs out there than I expected. I counted at least 3 Monsters.
The Desmo was paddocked halfway down the garage from me; the owner had also brought out his 1098s to play that day.

Yeah, saw a couple of Prov Nov's running in B group.  Must have been your friends?
Next time I'm out there, I'll be sure to walk up and say hi.

Yup, that's me!  There were 3 Prov Novs that were in our group.  I'm still one but have finished 50% of my requirements.  I should be done and be a full Novice by Sept.  Which one were you?

And this was also me (I had two bikes and was switching between them during the day).  ;D

Black with white trim cbr600rr, also running in group B.
LSTD puts on a good show. The day wasn't as crowded as I expected it to be.
