They are all water damaged from the last floods [thumbsup]
Most have had water past the axles which means possible water in engine if the water entered the exhaust joints :'(

Should be able to get over there some time before the auction, the only clue I have about the ex owners is the sticker on the race bike is for north coast v twins which is in Coffs Harbour.
They did have some floods there recently....

It's probably worth ringing Arthur at North Coast motorcycles in Coffs to get the details. Have spoken to him before when enquiring about another bike, he seems a good bloke.

Come on... give us the good oil.. any of these bikes worth bidding on?
by the sounds of 'flood damage' it's all a giant gamble!
the only way to be sure, from a knowledgeable mechanic, is to dissemble and check then put back....and that is HUGE money.
i have heard that they were all drained of oil, had a flush through with kerosene before being refilled and filtered. not sure how true it is, perhaps if someone has spoken to arthur or beato they could find out?
spider is right, i wouldn't even attempt to start one without tearing the whole thing to bits, putting the loom in the sun for a few days, going berserk with crc 2.26 and dielectric grease etc. as for the motor, i'd definitely be pulling the oil and filter, filling it to the brim with kerosene and draining it well, wd40 in the spark plug holes and turn it over by hand a few times before firing it up. it will smoke like a bastard for a bit though!!! ;D
paul.
Hi members,
So did anyone go an have a look at these bikes? Any worth bidding on?

as an out board mechanic i yoused to get a lot work on drowned motors if there got to within 24 hours theres no probs even with salt water but left any longer than that then there a total rebuild , the crank and cylinders seem to rust first then any needle and roller bearings but with fresh water drownings theres very little damage because the oil repels the water so if they were drained and run long enough to get up to running temp any remaining water should evaporate bazz

The up to 04 999 was a dog, the only good 999 was the 05-06 the s models being he best. to date Ducati has not built as good a chassis as the 05 06 999 and 999s.I would rather have a 999s over a 1098 any day.
From the factory the 999s was a better bike out of the box , it has race link rear suspension adjustable rear sets position, adjustable head stock just to name a few.
Yes it was 36k ,but get a 1098s to the same speck and it Will cost you 40k plus ,and it still want handle as good as a 999s .
I'll consider myself schooled on the topic - thanks Dock!

Thanks for the prices Doc...I'm surprised at how much $$ they were chasing for them! (given that they would need a VIV cert and still be on the written off register...)
93 900m referred at $6,250? they're smoking rope if they think it's worth more than that. $5,000 would be fair unless it's a minter (that hadn't been drowned). and they sell a st4s for $7,000 - must have had something wrong with it.

So that slightly limited edition chassis they were turning out recently (which I believe you have an intimate knowledge of) is not up to the late model 999 chassis?
Interesting ;)

Test rode a cheap 05 999s 2 week ago 18k 4500km not allot of money but it had been raced had a huge flat spot around 7000rpm that it wouldn't pull out of, it was the abyss of flat spots.
sort of lost hope now hence the Yam.Good luck in finding a honest one.

no one wanted to buy a new 999 in 05 (not from us anyway). well, that goes for most of the model range 04 - 06, excepting sXr monsters. being a ducati dealer in those years was not good. we sold over 100 new ducatis a year in the late 90's early 00's, then 35 on '06 i think. wally and wally (at nfi) kept saying in 06 "there's a new superbike coming and it's great, just wait for it" and we'd say "you said that in '02 before the 999 came out too, and you lied make the beast with two backsing".
I'm pretty surprised at those prices given the unknown condition following flood damage and the current state of the economy.
Then again people get carried away at auctions. I've been chasing a 4 wheeled vehicle lately. Went to an auction with a set limit of what I was prepared to pay on a couple of cars. Did my research first to set my limit. I was stunned as two idiots bid each other out to a shitload more than they would have paid somewhere else. Some people don't want to feel like they have lost and are willing to pay for it. [roll]
I thought the looks were the only unpopular part of the 999 equation? from the reviews I read of both 999 and 1098, everyone commented on the looks.
Good luck getting 16k for a stock 999 these days!
noodle is the same boat - not many of them - but not wanted either!
