Title: HDH Annual Ride(s)?

We've got to figure out a way to get the whole gang to go for a ride together at least once a year!!!

Well, I have a bit of experience organizing mass rides if anybody is interested.  Every club I've been a member of hosts at least one mega-ride per year, and some as many as three or four per year.  Generally, these involve either camping or staying in a motel near a place with lots of twisty roads.  There are generally meals and "fellowship" (read "drinking") at night and long rides during the day.

I don't really know enough about the local area to pick a location, but maybe Silver City, Cloudcroft, or Taos (on off-season) would be suitable?

The best group of guys I ever rode with did annual spring and fall rides to take advantage of the best weather.  I'll throw that out as a starting point.

Anybody up for it (or "down with it")?

im sure some of us would, but at the moment and with the way stuff has been none of us has the money to do like we did the last 2 years...some of us have talked about it before

but Ouray is the most important one to be at and my focus, i know i wont have the money to do trips like i planned ..

but there is always next year

I want to offer my place again as a destination for a future HDH ride.  I have a backyard for camping and enough floorspace to house a few hooligans, depending on how cozy we are feeling.  Free lodging and lots of great roads within reach around here.

It is tough to get everyone together for more than one ride or two a year, which is why Ouray is great.  It is the same time and place every year so everyone sets their sites on that event if nothing else.  But last year, some of us masquerading as the NMMR Gangsta's, got together for longer rides to Utah and Arizona.  It was great!  We started off large, then folks peeled off as their schedule dictated, and we ended up joining back up at the end sometimes.  Reference the threads back in late April and May of 2008 for the official pictorial journeys.  Anyway, an annual ride to Taos in the fall has emerged which now coincides with Feast Day.  Pam and Zaster have made that a wonderful day to anticipate and I plan to make that run yearly.  The Red River Fudge run has become another spring ritual, as well.

I hope when an official HDH trip gets pinned down for dates and route, there will be enough notice for me and maybe even DDGM to join in.  If it comes in a northerly direction, all the better.   [cheeky]  I miss you guys and all the impromptu rides.  Those long two or three day'ers kicked ass though, didn't they?

The ICR guys I rode with generally hosted their events at campgrounds.  The "wealthy" folks could rent a cabin (the campground we used rented cabins for about $100 per weekend) and the "poor neighbors" could stay in their tents, campers, or cars, or they could sleep under the stars, if the weather was cooperative, for $5 or $10 per night.  The campground had common toilet and shower facilities that all guests could use.  Often someone would volunteer to cook and we'd have barbeque or something (one of the guys made a "low-country boil".... the "low-country" refers to the area around Charleston, SC, and the boil consisted of a stew made primarily of shrimp and vegetables, kinda like a gumbo, only not) and we'd build a fire and  [drink] too much and do stupid stuff like jumping the fire or jumping sheep.  All-in-all it was a pretty good time as long as noone had a bad hangover to ruin the next day's riding. [thumbsup]

The point is, this group ran the economic gamut from fairly meager income to oh-my-God wealthy and the group agreed to work to the least common denominator and host events that everyone could afford.  The campground was no more than a 2 hour drive for most of the members so fuel cost wasn't a problem, and those who worked on Friday could just attend Saturday and Sunday.

Friday was often reserved as an off-road day for those with dual sport equipment.  Some guys would even bring 2 bikes, one for the weekend and another for Friday's dirt-dauber excursion.

I dunno...just throwing out ideas.  I'm happy with a jaunt to Madrid, but these kinds of weekends build friendships that last a lifetime!

Another 2 cents,

Cloner

Dude, I'm all about those activities, you throw some alpaca into the mix, and I'm there.

Bonfy is such a sprocket, those threads with all the hooligannisms in Utah and Arizona were posted on the DML.  There may be some shots on the official Lance Thruster thread toward the beginning.  No pix, it never happened, is our motto so she needs to dig those up.

Yup, we had us some serious fun.  I need to go out and mow the lawn before the next round of rainshowers, but Lance is bouncing around here nagging me to post at least a couple pictures of Utah and Arizona.  There are some toward the beginning of the official picture thread and also on Lance's thread, but you know how he gets.  He's an extremely demanding and determined gargoyle.  He always gets his way in the end.  And I am always up for a trip down Memory Lane.  It's inspiration for our next group ride!

Thanks for bearing with me, I have Turrett's Syndrome, only as it applies to pictures.  I go off at the drop of a hat, unprovoked, Pictureville.  I have tons more that bear posting.  They all went away when we abdicated from the DML.  That is why I am trying to get a few on here...for posterity's sake.  The new folks don't know about our rich and deep history.   ;D

Well, if those videos don't trigger some HDH action, I don't know what will!  Loved it (again).  Makes me want to go lube my chain or something.  The rain has started and the thunder is cracking.  Good thing Lance got the lawn mowed in time.   ;D

For some crazy reason my computer at work wouldn't let me view most of the pictures, but now that I've seen them I'm really excited.  Some of the places and roads depicted look pretty appetizing.  Some of the people look interesting, too, but that's another story, I suppose.

Thanks for the memories.
