BEAUTIFUL AND TIMELESS! You are one lucky SOB. LOL
Yeah!!! that's a winner right there! beautiful drawing. I might have to get one made also.
haha... wow! thanks for the compliments everyone [thumbsup]
the headlight and indicators were taped up for the track but she asked for another pic of the bike and drew it without the tape.
the drawing was framed and lives in a happy place among friends!
not drawings but prints of drawings..
Agostini (signed), Rossi, Doohan,Bayliss and Stoner.

the pic for the drawing was taken a few years ago and was my first or second time at the track (and I cought the trackday bug).
Here's some more recent pics. (I havn't been outon the monster this year because I bought a 748 for the track)

The drawing is sweet. It really makes me want to try to find some one nearby that can do that. It is really great work. [thumbsup]

Not trying to be critical of technique as I am hardly experienced enough, but isn't this a perfect example of being "crossed up" in a turn?
is he not shifting his body back to the left to prepare for the upcoming left hander? Looks like its mid-motion to me.

I would have to agree from the looks of it. No one is ever THAT crossed up! He's just pulling the bike back to flip it into the next corner.

That is exactly what is happening there. I had a shot from the frame before, but figured I would get a response from this one. Zaster knows how much I like this set of turns so he poured it on about two turns earlier. Coming from a ski & bicycle racing back ground, setting up for the turn & letting the skis, or bike come back under you is everything in a very quick lead change corner.Perfect form Zaster [clap]

If you are being serious (and knowing you I think you are). Having patience. Even though you are hurling yourself down the hill...or road in this case. You have to prepare long before the "Fact" (point of no returrn). When you enter a turn & you haven't prepaired for it, you have already set yourself up for failure, & have to pull a Chris Angel move. Thats why you will see me shake my head when someone launches up the road on one none of us know.
Crashing make the beast with two backsing hurts...alot.

two words: target fixation. [laugh]
All I know is that I tried to ski as a kid and couldn't do it to save my life. I had a sprained ankle within minutes. A year of moto riding under my belt, I attempt to ski again and get moved up 4 levels in single two day trip. There's gotta be some correlation there, even beyond tree=bad.

Congrats on that Lu !
There is even things you do turning on skis that would be similar to counter steering.
I found that the better my ski racing got, the better my bike handling (both types) got.
So it definitely goes both ways.

Yep, I know - I'm going faster than quite a few of the hanging off riders so my rhythm and smoothness are probably working well(ish). I'm just saying that if I want to go faster, with most/all lean angle used, I will probably have to put more weight on the inside. Not that I have to, but it's nice to have some challenges on the Monster before I seriously start thinking SBK.

I'm just saying that if I want to go faster, with most/all lean angle used, I will probably have to put more weight on the inside. Not that I have to, but it's nice to have some challenges on the Monster before I seriously start thinking SBK.
Do you often drag hard parts when you lean the monster with out hangin off the bike?

No, not yet, but I have dragged toes - until I moved them further back and in.
I have a very stiff linear spring which probably compresses less than stock, even if stock was preloaded.
I was draggin kickstand when i wasnt hangin off the bike ..but when i started hangin off more i was corning better and less input to the handle bar.
I know lots of guys who remove the kickstand for the track --> just park in one of those chock things.

+1 removing the kickstand. And you must have the tire chock. It really pays the price.

You can see that I don't hang off that much either, and this is one of two places on the track where I sometimes drag the sidestand. It makes a horrible noise but never seems to upset the bike all that much.
(The camera angle is a bit funny here - the zx6 is more or less at the apex and I'm picking the bike up on the way out).

DAMN, Lars. Nice! [beer]
You've obviously got no problems leaning the bike WAAAAAY the hell over. Before you start worrying about dragging knee pucks, I would suggest you start trying to kiss your inside hand.
Moving your upper body, even while keeping your lower half planted, will shift A LOT of weight both inside and forward. Moving JUST your upper body will also help keep you from getting "crossed up."
Won't help you scrape pucks, tho. ;)

During my second to last track day I remember to have done just that, and it worked very well. I have a large body, so it might be enough to kiss the mirror. In the twisties I still do it all the time - it helps TONS with flickability, bike control and confidence. During this last track day I seem to have left the mirror-kissing routine - instead I was going faster by leaning more and working on the rhythm. Next year I'll try to do both....
Thanks to your reply I'm able to put the two practices in relative perspective [thumbsup]

Rhythm/carrying speed is key to finding the fastest line for any given track. [thumbsup] That's one of the reasons that the Ninja 250 has its own (very competitive) race series.

If you're comfortable leaning a Monster THAT FAR over, AND you are comfortable leaning your upper body off the bike, then you're much closer to SBK status than most riders I know.
You're right, it does help with flickability. It's all a matter of leading with your "biggest asset." ;)

be that as it may, those parties need to remove their posts, yours included. Perhaps some of the discrepancies could be resolved with pointed questions in the applicable specific forum (example: the suspension preload question, a common misunderstanding among even experienced riders as to what it can remedy and what it cannot). This would need to be done without the name calling, or even party names really.

Is that guy dragging an elbow because he is freaking massive or is the bike that leaned over?
I think its a little of both.
The bike looks to be holding the bare edge of its tire, and he's got his head a good 6 inches or so to the inside of the centerline of the bike. Having the elbow down is just a consequence of that much lean.
I also believe that that pic is taken at the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, where normal rules of "gravity," "traction," and "testicular fortitude" mean almost nothing at all.

It was a sold out track day and there was alot of riders in each group so it was hard to get clean lap. This was the last track day for me this year so now I need to find some more speed for next year. As we all know a Monster is not a track bike, but it is the only street bike I own so for now it will do.

This is a great thread. Most photos are of our bikes either in the garage or parked up somewhere. I recently went on a ride where we made an effort to try to get some action shots. It didn't hurt that we had a guy in a car along who has a decent camera.

Feel free to critique form, looks like I'm a little crossed up to me. My shoulders look like they need to be more in line with my hips.
JM
Nice pics JM! [thumbsup]
I sometimes have the same issue... I'll slide off the seat and forget about my upper body. :-\
Now that I have a fairing and windscreen, it's easier to get my upper body in line with my hips, because I have a reference point for where my head needs to be... (outside the windscreen)
The only thing I'd suggest is getting off the bike a little more on left handers. In the last two pics, you're leaned over farther to the left, scraping toes, but not knee. On the right turn, you're a little further off the bike, with your left knee closer into the tank, and the bike is a little more upright, giving you more room for error. At least to my untrained eye... ;) I have the exact opposite problem... I'm further off on the left, than the right. One thing I've been experimenting with lately is draping my outside arm on the tank (relaxed) and pointing my inside elbow the same as my knee. It helps me get my torso in line with my hips a little better. I also try to rotate my hips as well. If I push my outside hip forward and drop my inside hip a little, it's easier (for me) to line everything up. Helps open up to the turn a little more. Just my $0.02 of course... ;)
You look like you're having a frackin' BLAST!!! ;D [moto]
Sometimes I really miss my Itty-Bitty Seven Fiddy... It was so light and easy to flick around and carry gobs of cornerspeed on! I surprised a lot of riders on liter bikes with my Little Rosie...
Thanks for the pics! [thumbsup]

My $0.02, JM.
Get the balls of your feet up on your pegs some more.
You'll have more ground clearance and feel more planted on the bike.

Don't have any with the Monster yet. Here's an obligitory shot from deal's gap. The pics are a bit overexposed (road was actually wet, doesn't look it in the pics though) - had just stopped raining and conditions were great - no cops and very little traffic. I had a ton of luggage though as I was on the last day or two of a 6-week trip (and I had to bring MX gear and courtroom-approprate cloths along too)

LOL!!
I'm the coach that bumped you into 2 where you belonged.
Like I said, with a monster you NEED to keep the bike more upright, cause once it's not the pegs/toes dragging (even though you were on the balls of your feet), then it's the kickstand nub or the pipes and the cross joint... the only way they don't drag shit is when you jack them waaaaaay up. And then it gets tricky keeping the geometry correct.
now with that said, talk to Chris at CycleCat cause they've got some sweet rearsets that fit the DSS previous gens...
There's a Ducati only track day this Monday coming with DESMO. Always a great time!!!!
Hope you had fun.

Yup. Time to get the ass off the seat! There's a reason the 851-888 and SS employ a 'high' / upswept pipe design. :D
Perhaps it's my fail then, because none of your pictures are working.

now with that said, talk to Chris at CycleCat cause they've got some sweet rearsets that fit the DSS previous gens...
There's a Ducati only track day this Monday coming with DESMO. Always a great time!!!!
Hope you had fun.
Wow, small world! I had a blast, as always. This was the first time out on the track for the Monster, entirely different than what I'm used to.
Last year I was out with my other bike, '07 600rr, and didn't have the peg dragging issue, although my knee pucks are a different story [laugh]

Awesome pics El Matador [Dolph] There's some perfect form and excellent lean [bow_down]
BTW the lack of body position in my pics is because the tank bag was so huge that I couldn't move over and still hold onto the bars. Also, this was just a short section of a 9k mile trip so didn't really have the time/motivation to ditch the luggage, though in hind-sight I kinda wish I'd stashed it at one end and made a couple of fast runs [evil]

Not a Monster but I actually chose to ride it in a session at a trackday instead of my Monster.

Honda CBR125 - fits into a racing class here called a commuterlite. Minimal mods, bike has about 14 hp. You have it PINNED everywhere. Good fun, handles pretty nicely too (and that's on stock suspension...). A friend of mine races them and does well in them (as he does on everything) and he kindly let me have a go.

Agreed. [thumbsup]
+1. the tires are so itty bitty, haha
2-stroke, right? The pipe seems large in diameter for a 2-stroke though...
Actually, the CBR125R is a 4 stroke. Hehe.
I have a friend who races Ninja 250s and he let me have a go with his fully kitted out race bike. Keeping it pinned everywhere was an understatement. I had to wrap my brain around keeping the throttle pinned going through a corner I would take at about 1/4 throttle on my GSXR750. hehe.

Yep you're on the money, 4 stroke. 14 throbbing hp at the back tyre running just velocity stacks, not allowed ecu mods so resistors on the pressure/temp sensor to richen it up. I think they're a 110 rear tyre? Anyway plenty of grip.
Eastern Creek is a fairly open and flowing circuit so it really is pinned everywhere. Back to 4th in a couple of spots, and a few lifts in 6th as it won't turn without some weight on the front, other than that, PINNNNNNNNED.
127 km/h down the main straight. Was in the novice group at the trackday and consequently caught a few of the guys in the tighter stuff. The owner can punt it around at respectible pace for that group, I figured I wouldn't bin it and went about 80%. Was fun, though a 20 minute session takes a loooooong time on it.
It's very unnerving coming up a corner for which you brake at about a 125 m mark, whereas on the CBR you're pinned till well just about entry.Lift, sit up, bash back two gears, let it wiggle, lean it, pin it again.

The CBR 125cc was my first bike ...and it was incredible fun !!! Always on the limit :o the thing has no grip so it was sliding all over the place!! ;D but since it a small bike it was really forgiving [thumbsup] I cried when I sold it :'(
I'm glad people enjoy some action on small Hondas.

That's me a few months back on a Honda CT110. We call them posties here, I understand they were sold in the states till 1986. All our postmen use them for deliveries and they are almost unkillable. Pirelli Scorpion junior MX tyres fit them which is excellent for off road.
