Since winter is now upon us, it's pull-it-apart, do-something-to-it and put-it-all-back-together season Down Under!
So.... I thought maybe I'd show how my 696 is coming along.....

The ungeheuer 696 story so far goes like this:
DP tail tidy. Red reflective rim stripes (bet you missed that one, eh ;)). DP Touring seat. 14 tooth front sprocket. Rizoma Sportline billet grips. Rizoma bar-end weights. Rizoma Class Retro mirrors. Billet reservoir covers. Stebel Nautilus air horn (heard but not seen). Pazzo levers - long uns. Termis. Ozynobs frame and axle sliders. Black ceramic coated exhaust. Polished aluminium-look ceramic coated exhaust heat shield, headlight bezel and Termi hangers. Rizoma billet camshaft end caps. Bikini fairing and exhaust-can heat shields relocated to garage shelf.
Ordered..... but still Up There in the USA [roll]:
SpeedyMoto Tall-boy clip-ons. SpeedyMoto top triple clamp. SpeedyMoto billet crankshaft end cap. Black-on-silver Termi decals.
Still to come:
Rear-sets (Rizoma $$$... :o or perhaps SpeedyMoto if they ever get around to it). Rizoma timing-belt covers.
Nice exhaust. I like the black with a little bit of sheen. Do you think it should stay like that or do you think it will go to flat black?

Thanks! Yeah I prefer the semi-gloss so I'm hoping it will retain that sheen. Time will tell I guess....
Looks great. How do you get your swingarm to look so dark black? Mine looks more gray.

Nice that my addiction seems to draw positive remarks ...lol.. Thanks [beer]. I dont do anything to get my swingarm to look so dark black..... Maybe coz - going by your avitar - yours is a dark, with additional darkening by the look, that the original blackness of the swingarm doesnt appear so black in the context of the surrounding darkness? Whereas mine isnt surrounded by so much black with which to compare how black it isnt? ???.....um... I'm gonna stop now in case I begin to make sense... ;)
question. i was planning on removing my pipes this last weekend but time got away from me. anyway before i get started how did you remove the direct pipes connecting to the temis? you know the bent one thats about 3-4 in long that connects directly to the termi cans...

Easy. The elbow pipe that links your Termis to the main Y section is just a push fit.
sweet! thanks for the reply and the help!
Like the pipes and the Rizoma Class Retros.
Some of the 696 swingarms look a completely different color from say the aluminum rear seatframe. Seems like they should match like yours does. Mine doesn't match either. Looks very grey, not black at all.
OK hold on here,....
WINTER< IE SNOW, I don't see any, wtf, that's not winter, that looks like summer.
You have your bike off the road because the grass has stopped growing???????
OH, NICE Pictures Thanks..
Russ, from the great white north of Canada
the newer 696's have a black swing arm vs. a gray one on the older models. the peg holders are also a bit different on the newer ones vs. the older ones. the older ones are a smoother silver color while the newer ones have a rougher kind of matte finish...
Nice work!
can you post a full side view of the bike with the clip ons? i also wanna see a pic of the clearance when fully turned!
Is there any wait longer than the wait for new bling to arrive?....lol.... Soooo... at long last here's my Speedymoto top-triple and tallboys. As fitted the tallboys set my grip height around 37mm lower than stock, they could be set lower but I'm very happy with em at this height. Took em for a 300km test outing today and am well pleased with the riding position and way the bike feels. I'm actually quite surprised that it felt so much better..... not just the riding position but the bike seemed to steer more tightly....... I still think that I must be imagining this handling improvement.

Next on the agenda is to lower the instrument binnacle to bring it in tighter to the new top-triple.... and those foot-peg hangers have got to go since they're now the only remaining textured grey item on the bike.
FINALLY!! [bow_down] Looks damn good man. [drink]

got a question. i'm taking my top triple off to get powder coated. can i just remove them off my bike on the kickstand? you had posted a pic in my thread without the top triple on. do i just loosen the three allen bolts and just slide them off the top? please help me out on how to get them off...
Thanks for the photos and report.
I am in two minds so badly over getting these or Swatts......
what to do, what to do. ???

If you plan on riding your power bike anywhere close to it's/yours limits - get the Swatts because of, if only, the more radical sweep back angle. It lowers your elbows, relaxes your wrists and therefor lets the bike do it's thing with very little rider input.
The Tall Boys are great, but it seems they are more in the direction of stock height and sweep angle - active city riding and lane splitting - elbows out, maybe lifted (sore?) shoulders.
Two different riding styles / preferances. Which is yours? [moto]

Well... yeah...more or less. Once you remove all the obvious other stuff... remove those 3 allen bolts and carefully and evenly tap the top triple up and off with a rubber mallet. I had my bike on a paddock stand but I guess you can do it on the side-stand too if you're not too enthusiastic with the rubber mallet. And dont forget the loctite blue for when it all goes back together.

+1 (kinda)
I was initially a little disappointed with the scope available for sweepback when I first installed the Speedymotos.

Dont know about Swatts but the Speedymotos as fitted to a 696 are going to give you no more than 50mm lower height over stock - I have mine set just around 35mm lower. I do no city riding nor lane splitting, only ever ride on the twisty back roads and I found the Speedymotos to be an unbelievable improvement over the stock bars - despite the lack of sweepback available. If I knew what I know now I'd order the Swatts rather than the Speedymotos coz you're not obliged to go the radical sweepback, but with the Swatts you will have the option to go more radical if you wish. So I'm delighted with the Speedymotos but Swatts I think will give you a greater range of options. Might be more of a PITA to fit though?

Quote from: mrplease on May 30, 2009, 10:50:33 AMalso, can you tell me a little about getting those pipes off. i think i'm going to attempt that in the real near future! also what color did you go with. those are a perfect black!
Removing the exhaust wasnt so hard:
Remove seat, underseat tool-tray and fuel tank* (careful with those quick release fuel line connectors!).
Remove your Termis.
Remove both lambda sensors (22mm open-ended spanner I think...).
Loosen the two chrome pipe clamps (10mm)
Unbolt the Y section (the 2 allen bolts are only accessible once the tank is out of the way*). For some reason, one of the nuts on the underside of the Y section is welded in place but the other one is held by one of those crappy clip-in spring holder things....
One more slightly awkward to get at allen bolt underneath holding the rear U bend section on... accessible - kinda lol - from the behind the right side foot-peg, careful of the rear-brake line.
Loosen and remove the nuts securing the exhaust pipe flanges to the cylinder heads. The outer nut on the rear cylinder I found I could only access with a 10mm tube-spanner, no room to get a ring-spannner, open-ended spanner or socket in there.
Remove the horizontal cylinder exhaust pipe from the front cylinder head.
Remove the vertical exhaust pipe from the back cylinder head.
I found that the exhaust gaskets wanted to stay attached to the cylinder heads so I left em there, but its probably good practice to fish em out and refit with new ones.
Block off the exhaust ports on the heads to prevent unwanted junk from entering the combustion chamber - I stuffed a clean rag in there, not too far though.
And as far as I remember, that's about it.
A couple of points for the refit:
Prior to screwing the lambda sensors back in, carefully twist the wiring looms counter-clockwise so that as you screw the sensors clockwise back into the exhaust pipe the loom ends up nice and straight and not all twisted up.
Also, I used a little graphite powder on the pipe joins - allows 'em to slip back together real easy.
This isnt the definitive "how-to" but I think it more or less describes how i achieved the task!
And yup, by pure luck the semi-gloss black finish does match perfectly 8). Very happy with the result.
Thanks :)
*Edit: mrplease reports that is not necessary to completely remove the petrol tank to get to the "Y section" mid-pipe bolts, so if you can avoid fiddling with those pesky quick release fuel-line connectors and still get the job done then I reckon its worth a go.

Rizoma rear sets ;D.

Lowering the speedo binnacle is a little scary coz it's a one-way-mod... which involves cutting down the mounting arms - an integral part of the alloy headlight casting. I cut the mounting arms down by around 12mm and fabricated 2 new small brackets which live beneath the speedo cover out of sight. Not hard to do, but there's no going back. If you have now or intend ever to fit the micro-bikini fairing then I wouldnt recommend doing this. Also for me I felt I needed to do this as the speedo was sitting out further ahead after I fitted the speedymoto top-triple..... I dont know if there would be room to do it with the stock top-triple coz of the handlebar mounts...?
__________________
had been thinking about that lowering thing. has anyone looked at lowering the whole headlight unit? i think if you put a spacer in between the top triple and the hanger for the headlight enough to lower the headlight where the lower mounting bolts are below the bottom triple, it might work. i think it's about a 2-3 inch drop.
Raux, coz of the way the headlight mounts to my speedymoto top-triple I needed to mount the headlight slightly lower than stock, but its only lower by about 5mm. I think if you lowered the headlight as much as you're suggesting then you're gonna run into (literally) clearance issues with the front wheel when the forks hit compression.....
Thats it. I'm done. Yup. Seriously. Stop laughing, I am done.
My M696 is going away someplace else and will be replaced by an M1100S [evil]
Looks great! I'm stuck between the Swatts and Tallboys. Are your Tallboys about the same length as the stock bars or ...? I have CRG barend mirrors on my stock bars and I think they stick out way too wide. I wanted bars that were a little narrower, so I can lane split easier.
I also wanted something with a little more sweep back than the stock bars and it doesn't sound like the Tallboys will give me that. :-\
I wonder if the Swatts would fit a 696/1100? I was told the Tallboys fit perfectly since they clamp to the sides of the forks.
I can't find the post, but I'm 99% sure someone has the Swatt clip ons on a 696. (maybe mrPlease?)
You'll need the spacers for the 696 coffin master cylinder(s).
If I remember correctly, there were no issues fitting the Swatts (don't quote me on that)

Cheers. Tallboys ended up just slightly narrower than stock bars and I set mine 37mm lower than stock bars. Could've got more sweep-back than I did but would have needed to sacrifice more steering lock. I think Swatts will give more sweep back without losing so much steering lock. Coz I'm a glutten for punishment I have ordered me a set of Swatts and will fit 'em up to my incoming M1100 in the near future and then decide which I prefer.

Tip: HPC's black ceramic coating is the perfect match for the black plastic components on our bikes, I've used it on my (M1100) headlight surround, petrol tank cap, zorst hangers. I'd be wary about having the forks done though - if you want em black why not vinyl wrap 'em?

Resurrecting an old thread.
The 696 Monster featured here is running Termi slip-ons with a ceramic coated exhaust.
The slip-ons look like they have the heatshield bracket removed and the elbow also ceramic coated.
Has anyone also removed the heatshield bracket and ceramic coated the elbow and how was it done?
Also if anyone has feedback on the durability of the ceramic exhaust after a few km's?
Maybe send Ung a pm. A reply might take awhile as he was flat out last time I spoke to him.

For any future readers:
The elbow is removable from the Termi slip-ons by simply pulling.
Once the elbow was removed the heatshield bracket was then removed using a die grinder without damaging the part so if required for any future requirement it can be returned to stock.
All the pipe was then sent to be ceramic coated by Jet-Hot.
The main consideration for doing this modification is that no aesthetic heatshield could be sourced, ceramic coating will provide a much cooler pipe and no pillion will be aboard for whom the heatshield interference is provided.
