So, this whole time I thought it was my oil filter that was leaking. I'm not so sure now. Looks like I might have a small leak between the cases. I end up with a residue all over the bottom of the case only after a long ride. I checked the case bolts and they were all a little loose compared to the torque they were supposed to be at. This sucks!
Not between the main case halves right? But between the main and the accessory covers - like the alternator cover or clutch side cover?
My alternator cover developed a leak a bit ago, between it and the main case - right by where the clutch slave is mounted to it. Seems this is not so uncommon for dry clutch ducs with some age on them (mines an 00). The action of the clutch slave pulling on that case repeatedly over the years leads to degradation of that seal.
Hope that helps track down you leak
No, between the main cases! Right down the center line. The bike is an '06 with less than 4500 on the clock. All the case bolts were loose, but I can't get to one without removing the custom exhaust.
:-\ Right now, I'm not sure why there is a leak except for that crappy gasket compound that they use. It's a wet residue, so it's difficult to track down exactly where it is originating. It only happens during long rides. ??? >:(
The only way I know to fix that is to split the cases. It's a big, however not too technical job. A long w/e should do it...........have fun [bang] [bang]
Well, I waited until the engine was warm and then tightened the filter one more time just to see if that helped. No leak! It was just seeping enough to leave a residue. Go K & N!
Bet that was a good feeling... dodged a bullet there.
I guess we saw Occams Razor in action yet again.
Well, it could have been the loose case bolts. They were definitely loose. I've seen that happen before on other bikes right around 4 to 5k miles. Either way, I'm glad it wasn't much of anything! On the road again... 8)
