Title: Exhaust Gaskets for S2R800
Post by: psycledelic on June 19, 2009, 09:30:36 AM
Anyone know if the exhaust gaskets for an S2R800 are a common size or am I gonna have to make an hour drive to the shop?

Do you need them NOW?  If not the internet is your friend.  (I buy 99%  of my parts online from ProItalia.  My local dealer never has anything I need in stock.  And fwiw, when I buy stuff like this, I always buy twice as many as I need so I have them already the next time I need them.)

If you do need them today, you could pull one out and see if a local motocycle shop has one.  (Sorry I have no idea if they are a "common" size or not.)  I also think NAPA may have a size that would work.

Yea, it's now or no bike.  I have one out and it looks like a run of the mill doughnut style gasket, but those Italians are sneaky.  I am gonna go shop around the local auto / moto shops.  I was just being lazy and hoping I would get lucky and someone online would know.

Good point, I will definately put a couple extra in the toolbox.

FWIW, the ones I bought to put in when I re-install my RR exhaust are 47mm X 39mm X 2.2mm and they are Part 037084005.  You might want to call a dealership and see if that's the same PN for your S2R (I have a '99 M900).  You might want to get a new set of exhaust nuts as well.  NAPA or any foreign car shop will have those.  They are M8 X 1.25 copper locking nuts.

I actually pulled the nuts/threads and touched them up at work last night (cleaned, tapped, and filed the threads).  I will probably add new ones when I install my new exhaust.  Currently in between exhaust systems and am just installing the stock headers and udder until the new stuff arrives.

Exhaust nuts are supposed to be locking i.e. one use.  But like everyone else, I use them over an over (until I wised up and simply bought a box of them from WURTH. Luckily, two of my cars take the same ones)  And fwiw, if you're between exhaust systems, you can re-use the gaskets as well.  I have old ones in mine and, like I said, I'm waiting until my RR exhaust gets back from the ceramic coater to install all the new stuff.

One little tip:  IIRC  typical M8X1.25 lock nuts have 13 mm flats (I think) Porsche uses a special copper lock nut that has 12 mm sides and that extra MM helps a TON on the vertical cylinder.  If you have to buy some, try an indy Porsche shop.

Oh, and by "lock nuts" I mean the ones with the top two or three threads crimped.  Obviously NyLocks wouldn't do well in an exhaust application.

Talk about being ass backwards.  I am ditching gaskets and refurbishing the nuts.  I will definitely get new nuts and studs with the new pipes.  Thx for the heads up and all of the info.

Didn't smoke around the engine outlet?  I set mine up without one and is smoked pretty bad.  That was before I pulled the nuts and studs and cleaned them.  I am gonna try again.  No one around here has a gasket that is even close and the shop is gonna order me 4.

Personally, I wouldn't run it without gaskets.  IMO, you're better off with old ones than no ones.  YMMV.

nope, didnt smoke. The dealer that did my valve guides left it out and i rode like that for thousands. And i even dynoed it without the gasket. 85hp, 64tq or something like that.

i cut some cork gaskets and coated them with copper exhaust RTV silicone.

better seal and cheaper.

you have to let the RTV silicone completely dry, which means >24 hours to be safe.

gasket material comes in rolls at any auto parts store

the metal ones are crush fit.  they are fine, but a bead of silicone will seal far far better.

i put a bead on each side of the gasket, let it sit up for about an hour to firm a little bit then torque it all down.  the silicon will squeeze out a bit, but leave it and cut it away (DO NOT PULL) after it all sets and dries.
