Title: Splitting the cases
Post by: Blackout on June 23, 2009, 10:06:01 AM
Any youse guys done this?
I ask because it seems no one can weld where my kickstand/rearset bolts fit into the sump unless I simply bring them the part, not the whole bike. >:(

No, but if you want, bring it over to my place.

I'll probably do that, thanks.
You gonna be around this weekend and do you mind (longer term) storage? [laugh]
It can sit next to your neighbor's antique record player ;D

Before you go welding on the case, or worse yet, splitting the cases....

What is wrong?
Stripped thread?
Or is it cracked?

The bolt holes securing the kickstand to the sump were broken off and one of them has gone through to the sump producing a small oil leak. I've read on this forum that is not a very unusual problem and that many have had that area welded successfully. I had hoped to have it welded with the engine still in the bike but have been told that is not an option. Any ideas Speeddog?

I've had cases welded on an assembled bike, fixing that same kind of issue, other than it was a 996.

In that situation, it hadn't cracked through, but IMO that's not significant.

For a more durable repair, we put in some TimeSerts.

Yeah, I figured whoever does the job would need to build up that area and put in a time-cert.

The area needs to cleaned up and areas ground out with a die grinder or the like.
The welder can give you direction on what needs to be done.
Those 2 bosses are machined to the same level as where the sidecover sits, so it needs to be built up to a bit past that level and then *carefully* 'machined' back flat.
When I say 'machined', I did it with a die grinder and files... just have to go slow and careful.

You're more or less in NASCAR  country, there's got to be some talented welders around.

Also, give ducvet a shout.
He's not *real* close to you, but IMO he would have some good feedback for ya.
