Title: Product Review: Bayco worklamp/ flashlight

So I bought one of these Bayco 66 LED tasklight/ flashlight/ work lamp things for my dad for his birthday last year. He had previously been using an 18" Craftsman work lamp and then accidentally drove over it.  [roll]

Anyway, when I first got the lamp from Amazon it was defective and only lamp portion worked. The flashlight portion on the tip of unit wouldn't turn on. So, I popped it open and found the soldering on the board to be rather poor. After poking at it a couple times I found that the wire for the flashlight portion had come loose. No problem, send it back to Amazon and get a new one.

All is dandy in the world and the light works well. Since it is an LED unit there are no halos and the light is an even white light. In the last year we've dropped it from waist height a couple times and it survives no problem. The light holds a charge pretty well too and lasts for a whole weekend of tinkering. Small note, the plastics on this light don't like brake cleaner.

Fast forward a year and 3 months and my dad is using the light and starts to smell electrical burning. Must be his car. Nope. Once he turns off the light, it doesn't turn back on. This time the lamp portion stopped working but the flashlight portion still works. I popped it open but I can't see anything glaringly wrong so i think something must have burned out inside something like maybe the switch shorted or something like that. Anyway, it's just over the 1 year warranty so if I can't figure out what it is, it's kaput. I also have a shorter 12" one that hasn't seen as much use. I bought it at the same time but it'll be seeing more use now that the big one is broken. We'll see if it dies too.

Was it worth the $44 + SH? Hmmm... not sure. While it worked I liked it a lot but I don't really want to spend $44 every year on a new light. I might be persuaded to buy a new one but I'm not sure.

i have one very similar, but it does not have a flashlight portion. (only half light and full light) it is rechargeable and yellow. (i also have 2 corded ones but finding an outlet sometimes sucks)

the best part? the end is a magnet under a rubber endcap. i stick this light to the side of my computer case, the underside of my car hood, and it even worked perfectly sticking it to the frame to change my oil in my dark basement (you gotta stick it where 2 trellis bars meet, so it has enough to hold onto)

cant remember what its called or where i got it, but its handy in a pinch! hope you get yours sorted out

I was under the impression computers don't like that.

It depends on which part of the computer :)

Funny thing, when I was trouble shooting the light I shorted the switch to see if that was the problem. The light lit up but switch still wouldn't work. shorted it a few more times and then shorting it stopped working but the switch started working.  [roll] At least it works now but I have not idea why.

<geek>When I used to work in an NMR lab, the giant magnet would mess with the CRTs so we would place small magnets around the monitor to compensate for the effect.</geek>

Haha, continue threadjacking my own thread...

When I used to put my back up battery on top of my desk it took me a month to figure out what was causing my CRT to trip out. Apparently the battery made an electrical field that was screwing with my monitor.  :o

When I was on the aircraft carrier, we had to have special monitors that had the ability to degauss. Military ships create magnetic fields to help deflect mines. Those fields mess with the crt's...

Caveman?  Ninja please.  I'm still rocking the dual CRTs.
