I am a member of the Ohio YSR League (http://www.ohioysr.org/rules.htm) mini-racing club. Around Thanksgiving 2008 it was announced that one of our members, a 13 year old kid and fellow racer, Harrison Ringel, was diagnosed with leukemia. Harrison is so far doing well, but it has been unbelievably hard on everyone involved, especially his family. Fortunately the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has been phenomenal. They have done so much, in fact, that Harrison's father wants to give back to this organization by putting on a benefit race to raise money for the Society.

And here he is (#617) on August 22, 2009 still beating out the competition despite the chemotherapy!
In addition to the race entry fees and kart rental fees generating money for the benefit, Harrison's father is also selling T-Shirts. Any organization (such as the DMF) to raise $100 or more was listed as a "sponsor" on the benefit race T-shirts.
Money was collected via Paypal through August 31, 2009, and amazingly the DMF donated a whopping $1000 with the DMF match amount! The most out of any sponsor...which gave us TOP BILLING for the Benefit T-shirts!
To order a shirt, please fill out THIS FORM. (http://sites.google.com/site/harrisonbenefitrace/registration-form)
They are $10. Again, all monies collected from T-shirt sales will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
After submitting the form, Harrison's father Paul will send you an email with the total and where to send a check. Once he receives your check, you will be mailed your T-shirt.
Here are some pictures of the finished product:

You don't have to just donate; if you are anywhere near Circleville (near Columbus) Ohio, please come out and RACE!! We are a mini-racing club and race NSR50's, YSR50's, motards, XR100's, scooters, pocketbikes, etc. We also have a lot of kids that race with us and the go-karts will be available for rental during practice and at other scheduled times during the day. More details on all of that are in the benefit race link above.
Harrison is a great kid, polite, fun - always happy. Even with all that is going on right now you just cant bring him down. Everyone involved with OYL was devastated when we learned he was diagnosed with leukemia.
Harrison is on the left with my dog and his best friend on the right.

cool fundraiser. Wish I were closer for the event itself. Money on its way.
Lost a close friend to cancer 23yrs ago. He was sixteen. No child should have to go thru this.
Money sent.
From the start of this forum to date, the admins have each taken fifty dollars as a beer/drink money as a thank you to the members who have donated to the beer fund (pictures in progress as we know we now owe drunkled proof). After expenses, that leaves us with a bit. We're making sure the rainy day fund is ok so the DMF won't go away, but after a year it's time to start giving back the extra.
The DMF will match member donations up to a total donation of $500
If you were about to donate to the DMF, send it here instead, and the DMF will match you dollar for dollar. It's not like the admins need more booze right now. (well...sort of...but not paid for by anyone else ;D)
Kristen will give us a total. Let's not waste any and match the $500 DMF amount!
cheers,
Chris and all the DMF admins.

WOW that is so awesome of you guys! Extremely generous, and I know the Ringel family will be so happy to hear this. [bow_down]
Right now our DMF total is at $10.
Everyone who decides to donate, please put "DMF" in the paypal notes section. Then there will be no guessing where the money came from!!
We need $100 by the end of July to be listed as a sponsor on the race benefit T-shirts, but we will be collecting donations through the end of August. I would love to see $500 in donations from members! That would be phenomenal!

Do you not have or do not want to get a Paypal account? We just upgraded the account to Premier so we can now accept credit card donations through Paypal. You just have to have the credit card you wish to use added to your account. Other than the Paypal option, we have no way to accept credit card donations.
SWEET- we just hit $150 in DMF donations!! We are now officially sponsors for the benefit race. Could an admin or mod please
email (kjskvorak@gmail.com) me a high resolution file of the DMF logo that you would want to be on the shirt? I will then get it to Paul ASAP.

I thought we could order shirts on the benefit race details site, but looking at it now it doesnt look like ordering is possible at this time. I think Paul (Harrison's father) planned to have the T-shirt sales actually AT the event, but selling them remotely to people unable to be there on 9-12 is a good plan. I will ask Paul how he wants to do that and get back to you guys.

I'm not aware of a full sized track in Circleville.
My Company owned property their for 20 some years.
Have been there probably over a 100 times , it's a rather small town .
I would have known of a Race Track large enough for bigger bikes . Sounds like a Cart track.
Possibly they race around the Pickaway County Fair Grounds.

Yeah, its just a little kart track - about 0.7 miles long. Circleville Track Link (http://www.circlevilleraceway.com/)
Here is a blurb from OYL, my racing club, on the bikes we race:
QuoteWe offer competitive racing for 50cc to 100cc 2-stroke motorcycles, up to 150cc liquid cooled 4-stroke motorcycles, up to 200cc air-cooled 4-stroke motorcycles, and 250cc (max displacement) two stroke scooters. Racing is divided into Modified Stock, Supersport, Formula One, Formula two, Formula three, exhibition Scooter Stock, exhibition Scooter Specials, and exhibition Automatic 50 (Junior and Senior) classes.
New total as of now: $280 in DMF donations!! Thanks to all who have donated thus far! [clap]
A quick note about T-shirt sales and how to order:
Please do not add T-shirt money to your donation and send that to the paypal account listed. We would like to keep T-shirt sales separate from member donations, and I can see how keeping T-shirt orders straight could get complicated pretty fast.
I briefly talked to Paul and he is trying to figure out some kind of online order for the shirts through the benefit website.
I will post here when I find out how and when you can do that.

New DMF member donations now total $300 as of this morning. Thanks again to all who have contributed to this awesome fundraiser!
I told Paul, Harrison's father, about the DMF raising enough to be a sponsor for the benefit race and the generous DMF Match the admins have pledged. This was his response:

Let's get to $500 in DMF donations by the end of the month!!!
Thanks for the bump!
DMF member donations now total $375! Only $125 more to hit that DMF match of $500!! Way to go everyone! [bow_down]
Did enough donations come in yet to hit the DMF $500 match offer yet?
We have a week left.
We are currently stalled at $375. Very close to the $500 match mark!
BUT we are going to be collecting donations through the end of August. I'm confident we can hit $500 by then. The benefit race is September 12, so we have some time. We sent the T-shirt sponsor money plus a little extra to Paul this weekend, and will send the rest at the end of August before the benefit.
I also have not heard back about how to place T-shirt orders, but will ask again.
C'mon folks, open your wallets!
Tonight's bump. :)
This morning's bump :)
Rebump!
Thanks for the support all! I really hope we can make it to $500 by the end of August, but either way we have raised a FANTASTIC amount. Paul was really touched by all the donations thus far. Thank you! [clap]
I wanted to post an update since there is about one month before the Benefit Race takes place and only 3 more weeks to collect donations. We just sent a second check to Harrison Ringel's family this weekend and assured Paul that more would be coming once the DMF match takes place! He really cant believe how much we have raised thus far and is very grateful.
The DMF donations total is still at $375. I would love it if we could get to $500 by the end of this month to satisfy the max DMF match! If we can get a little closer, I will donate some more of my own money to top it off.
Thanks to all who have donated. It is much appreciated.
I'm holding $25 for a member here...not sure if you have that in the total yet....so perhaps it's 400. that makes 800 total with our match (or 750 if you already counted that $25). nice job regardless of final.

Yes, the $375 includes the $25 you are holding for a member.
allright. I'll donate $25 so we're at $400. ;D
I'll move it into the DMF account and then send $425 when it's time (unless we have more by then...cough....)
We had an OYL race at BeaveRun Raceway in the Pittsburgh area yesterday. It was a great day for racing, and I was surprised to see that Paul had Benefit T-shirts to sell there! I wasnt expecting to see them until the event!
Paul was so excited to show me the back of the shirt with all the sponsors...because we got TOP BILLING! Paul told the people he had make the shirts to make the DMF "nice and big". (Check out who is on the bottom right...Mat Mladin!) Here are some photos:

I added the front graphic pic from the first page to the above post that shows the t-shirt back. I dont have any close-ups of the actual T-shirt front right now (ours are in the wash) but I can get one. It looks just like the graphic, only the green is slightly different.

OK, FINAL total donated by the DMF was $1000! I received the match amount a few days ago from the Admins. Thank you all so very much! When Paul Ringel was first telling my mini race club of his plans for this benefit race, he was hoping to raise $1000 TOTAL from all sponsors combined.
The fact that the DMF alone raised that much is quite an accomplishment! [beer] [clap]
I wanted to share something that Harrison's mother wrote in response to a PM I shared from ZOSO about Harrison and the benefit race. I think it sums up the Ringel's thoughts and feelings nicely.
QuoteThank you so very much for sharing that with us. You and Ryan have been so helpful in raising these funds and encouraging others to help us. As I (Ginny) read what you sent from Peter and what you wrote, I was so touched, tears ran down my cheeks. To know that our Harrison inspires those who don't even know him, is very touching to me.
This whole journey has been surreal and though my tears flow often, they have sometimes been the result of something that makes me smile. I keep thinking that Harrison, after all he has endured, will be a really neat man, and sometimes I have to be reminded that he already is a really cool kid. Though I'm not sure why this has happened to my little man, the great part of all of it is the positive attitude he continues to have, and the sweet and happy boy he remains. You have reminded me of one of the reasons I am so very proud to be his mom.
Thanks again for all you have done, and continue to do. It means the world to us.
Love,
Ginny Ringel
T-shirts will be available for order until they are gone! I will edit the first post to reflect that.

[laugh] That's fanTASTic!
My husband and I are back from the Benefit Race! The benefit was Saturday and then there was a regular OYL club race the next day (ugh, tired!). There were quite a few spectators there for the benefit, and we had a bunch of members from the NJ MiniGP racing club (http://www.njminigp.com/) come out! That was pretty cool - we had some pretty big grids of minibikes! They put stands out in the field in some corners, and since there were shirts available for sale there, when you looked at the stands it was just a sea of green! Very cool. They had go kart rentals between the bike races, a blow up bouncy thing for the little kids, some National Guard guys were there in their BDU's with a big military HumVee and they were giving rides, and then there was food and lots of stuff that people donated for a silent auction (we got a shirt signed by Mat Mladin, Sidi boots worn and autographed by Aaron Yates, and a real Larry Pegram Ducati team shirt). They had lots of other stuff - signed helmets, other signed shirts, Indianapolis MotoGP stuff, gift certificates to local shops, etc.
At first count, after paying what they owed for the use of the track and the go karts, they raised over $4000! I have photos - will post them when I have a chance.
There are still LOTS of T-shirts available for order! Paul, Harrison's dad, said he is getting them out the same day he receives the checks from people. With all the donations they have received for Tshirts orders, all orders are now 100% profit to go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma foundation. He said there were quite a few people Saturday that wrote checks for $50 or more but only wanted a single shirt. With all the doom and gloom you see on the news, sometimes the kindness and generosity of people surprise you.
...Oh and speaking of the news, one of our OYL members went to some local news stations with the story of Harrison and the benefit race to ask if they would like to cover it and NO ONE wanted to! Seriously, a story about people from all over the country coming out to help a sick kid and raise money for the Leukemia Foundation? What's better than that, especially for a small town in Ohio? I guess its too uplifting and inspiring for the news [bang]
Paul also said he has been telling the story of the DMF donation to everyone and it just blows people away. No one else even came close to donating what we came up with. Ginny, Harrison's mom, came up to me and expressed how much she appreciates all that we have done and got all teary. We should really be proud. [clap]
That is great [thumbsup]

I know this thread has been inactive for a while, but the DMF did SO much to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, that I thought you might be interested in this.
Harrison recently shared his story to an audience as part of his recovery process. He has been in remission since Thanksgiving 2009, almost exactly one year from when he was diagnosed! They put on a show titled "Dude, where's my hair?" It's funny, inspirational, and really shows Harrison's strong positive character. He also talks about his passion for racing motorcycles. [moto]

The Ringel Family announced at our miniracing banquet that they will be holding another benefit race this year, this time for the Make a Wish Foundation. Do you want to know the wish they granted?? He and his family will be going to the MotoGP race in Laguna Seca! He will be staying in a VERY nice hotel right near the track, watching the race from a special location, and he gets to meet Nicky Hayden in person - his favorite racer. Nicky's favorite charity is Make a Wish, so this was a pretty easy sell for them I guess. :D Nicky will also take Harrison for a spin around the track on the back of his GP bike! Pretty freaking awesome :)

I had forgot it was even about Leukemia specifically, it was just one of my motorcycle shirts. That is until my 5 year old said the word on the shirt out loud to me. How did she know a big word like that? She was diagnosed with it last year, and has been in treatment for over 8 months.
Kind of strange I had the last post on this from 2010, and the next one again in 2017... I haven't posted much in a long time. Not due to anything specific, but getting more involved in bicycles VS motorcycles. I still read once in a while and it feels the same. [thumbsup]

Sorry to hear about your daughter's condition mitt...I truly am. Us dad's aren't programmed for things we can't fix. :'(
Glad to hear that this place still feels the same for you.
Come around more often. [thumbsup]
Oh man, so sorry to hear this mitt. Best thoughts from the wife and me.
