Title: testing.. need some technical help
Post by: daftduc on July 07, 2009, 06:16:55 PM
I'm trying to embed maps from google maps.  The purpose is I thought it would be great if we had a thread with maps of various routes around our area.  I want the picture of the maps to appear in the thread.  It doesn't seem to work.  The code below is what I got from google after I made my route map.  The code is supposed to be for embedding.

<iframe width="640" height="480" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=embed&amp;saddr=County Rd J&amp;daddr=Portland Ave to:Keystone Ave N to:Manning Ave N to:45.079842,-92.847104&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FZyIsAId_uJ0-g;FVp1sAIdnCZ1-g;FYWTsAIdZn52-g;FTBCsAIda_p2-g;&amp;mra=mi&amp;mrcr=2&amp;mrsp=4&amp;sz=14&amp;via=2&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=p&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=101993332039191495162.00046e2834a7527492dce&amp;ll=45.104546,-92.926483&amp;spn=0.116315,0.219727&amp;z=12&amp;output=embed"></iframe><br /><small>View <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=embed&amp;saddr=County Rd J&amp;daddr=Portland Ave to:Keystone Ave N to:Manning Ave N to:45.079842,-92.847104&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FZyIsAId_uJ0-g;FVp1sAIdnCZ1-g;FYWTsAIdZn52-g;FTBCsAIda_p2-g;&amp;mra=mi&amp;mrcr=2&amp;mrsp=4&amp;sz=14&amp;via=2&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=p&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=101993332039191495162.00046e2834a7527492dce&amp;ll=45.104546,-92.926483&amp;spn=0.116315,0.219727&amp;z=12" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">Northeast Metro Ride</a> in a larger map</small>

Here's the link to the map I made.  But I don't want a thread with just links.  I want the picture of the map to appear.  Isn't that what embedding would mean?

Great idea.

Unfortunately, what you're looking at is HTML, and generally forums don't let you embed straight HTML for security reasons.  (You could, for example, create havoc with the rest of the site's layout.)

That's why they make you use tags in brackets [] instead of HTML, which is defined by tags in <>.

So, basically, the forum moderator would have to add some kind of bracket tag to allow you to embed a google map, much like they do with images and YouTube videos.

After a considerable effort to redeem Microsoft's name by finding a way to embed a Google map in this forum (convoluted, eh?), the only possible solution I can see is to wrap the map in flash, which is way more headache than it's worth.  Perhaps an old school print screen would suffice?

What about using,  www.motorides.com (//http://)   It has local routes in it, you can enter more routes. It also has forecasts, road conditions, gas stops, etc. on the bottom of the page.

That's crazy talk Gabe! Why would any one use the myriad of solutions that are readily available when we can curse Microsoft!!!

If it was easy to redeem Microsoft's name everyone would do it.

Seriuosly folks. The screen capture to photobucket/flickr is about as easy as anything. Motorides is good too but we would still have to insert the url. What a pain for those of us who type with less then the normal 10 fingers. ;D

I haven't really used the motorides thing yet but you can submit routes so couldn't we just submit some more routes then it would be easy to just refer everyone to those routes.....seems much easier to me.

well I was thinking of having route maps right here without having to go to another site.  It just seems it would be nice to have our own routes created by people we know.

It may be old school but I don't even know how to do a print screen.  When I right-click on google maps it gives me the map options not the windows options.  That way could work though but without being able to see street names it might be hard for some to find the route.

BTW I even tried embedding the map on my myspace page where I know html is allowed but it didn't work.

http://www.motorides.com/ride.php?ride=273 (http://www.motorides.com/ride.php?ride=273)

Try this. Just click the link above. I can't think of it getting much easier than this. I simply went to the site, chose a route, selected the "copy url" option at the top, copied and pasted here. (John, no typing necessary and I did this in seconds!) Now everyone only needs to click once and you are there.
You can create routes too.

Once you go to the map you can view it in map view, satellite view, terrain view, or hybrid. So you can see all of the streets if you want to. The it's interactive so you can zoom and move wherever you want instead of being stuck with a cut and pasted picture. You also have the forecast at the bottom of the screen!

So, I just can't see it getting much easier/ better than that.

Well I just did my route on it.  The map interface isn't as user friendly as google's but it's pretty simple.  Also there is an approval process so it's not instant.  But maybe it will be the best option.

+1 on this.  If it didn't have an approval process it would be ideal.
