Title: Pants over jeans
Post by: scduc on July 15, 2009, 05:57:01 PM
So I've been back on two wheels for over a year now, and after reading alot of posts, ATGATT, I think that it is in my best interest to find more protection for my lower half. Problem is, most of my rides are to and from work and I really do not feel like hauling a pair of jeans in a backpack and change before and after work. So, what are my options for leather pants (best protection) that will fit over jeans? Does anyone do this? I'm trying to protect myself as much as possible without major inconvenience. I do wear good boots as I have a pair of steely's at work to change into.

I would say any good brand of 1.1-1.3 mm thick cowhide leather Pants with CE Armor in the Knees and Shins .

Buy them one size larger than your usual pant size if you are planning to wear them over a pair of jeans.

If it was me I'd buy Dainese which I own several pairs of. I consider them the best and they are probably one of the more expensive.

They will run you depending where you buy them $400 and up if you want perforated for breath ability.

You can buy AGVs for $200 plus . I have a pair of AGVs that are good looking but I've never worn them.

Alpinestars are probably ok. EU sizing Pants converts to US by subtracting 20.   56/36

I know they make "riding" jeans, but I don't know what kind of protection they offer-obviously nothing compared to leather, but... Also, who know's how comferatble they be for working in all day. Just 2 cents worth--if that.

check out aerostitch, they might have something for you.

personally, you could wear under-armor. not the brand, but stuff like

and

but it would probably be easier to jump into jeans instead.

I wear Dainese D-dry textile pants over jeans (and other pants)and they are very comfortable and easy to take on and off.  I do have to take the boots off to get the pants on/off though.

An Aerostich one-piece will be the very quickest to get on and off of anything, but doesn't work quite so well if you need to walk around carrying your gear with you (which I do).  If you are just going to work and back it's a nice option.

I have a friend with these leather overpants, I think they work pretty well for him:

The top textile stuff right now does very well in abrasion testing (sliding on the concrete) and would probably be much more comfortable and more affordable. Based on your description, that is the way I would go.

BMW (Motorad??) makes a fair amount of pretty good stuff.  Depending on what kind of cut you wear in jeans you'll want to look at something that fits a bit looser.  I can't imagine what kind of bulk jeans would provide under another pair of pants.  While I'm all for more and more padding, CE stuff in the knees, etc might be difficult.

If you're going to get leather, you may need to think about the "sweat factor" you'll have with two pairs of pants, the inner most of the two being fairly absorbent  :o.

I have a pair of rev'it textile pants (Factor I think?) They have a very warm removable liner, however for the warmer weather, I just zip that out and it leaves plenty of room to fit over my work pants. We have a few pieces of rev'it gear and have been very happy with it.

I have a pair of Aerostich Darien pants that I wear over jeans daily. They have nice armor in them, are easy to get on and off, are waterproof, and are comfortable (after they break in). Not the cheapest...but worth the money IMO.

I also know people that have crashed wearing Aerostitch gear so I'm comfortable with the protection level they provide.
