Just got off the phone with Toni at AMS and she wanted me to mention that the AMS trackday (not private) will be Nov 1. I mentioned the full trackday on RED's Sept 24th trackday thread, but figured I might as well give it's own thread.
I'll be there for this one. [thumbsup]
Cool. November 1st is a Sunday. Gonna try and make this one.
No, really.

Sliced up my hand and have stitches, so I have a real excuse now!

November 1st looks good too [bang]

It should be $150 prepaid and $200 day of.
Not sure if you guys have seen the AMS site and the ad for the Nov 1 trackday. But it looks like Larry Pegram will be in attendence. [bow_down]
Oh!
:o
My!
:o
Bad!
:o
Wonder if I pit next to him and his factory truck some of his riding skillz might rub off on the Rock Bottom Racing rider??
Dang, hope he does a clinic! :o
Don't forget the day before he'll be signing autographs and be at a group dinner at Urbino
(I have a autographed pic of Larry on his 848 last year... thanks CDC [thumbsup])
Very cool, didn't know about the dinner part. Thanks for the post [thumbsup]
I'm signed for the track day and the private track day with Jeff and Marty on the previous Thursday at MSR. Will be at Urbino's for the Pegram signing. Much fun!
Just to clarify, the autograph session is at AMS during the day. Dinner at Urbino is just a social thing. And that would be Halloween evening.

Thanks, my bad, my cloudy mind will see slight clearing today with a 60% chance of increased memory failure going into tonight's happy hour. ;D
Cruised over to AMS today and gave 'em some cash for the 11/1 track day. Got me a badass go-fast Xerox Ducati tee as well. Jeez, I really need to stay away from there - all new race-related clothes... Here, Rosa, just take my billfold; it's a ll yours [bang] [laugh]
Could be worse - at least they still have the 1098S [evil]
I have a very old personally autographed pic of him when he was with team suziki ( along with matt maladin, aaron yates) thats cool wish I were there, its starting to cool down here.
Here too... finally. This weekend will be sunny, highs in the low/mid 70s and lows in the mid 50s... awesome! [clap] Alan, how are things in WV? Tell Mindy howdy! Throw Desmo a treat for us!! [bacon]
I'm probably going to camp out at MSR the night before so if anybody is interested let me know. It'll give me an extra hour of sleep [thumbsup]

Rock Bottom Racing will also be set up in the paddock in the totally moded out too fast Rock Bottom Racing RV. :-[
Fred Flintstone watch out! [evil]
Damn, this is serious :o I was debating about whether or not to bring a hat [laugh]
I'll be camping there purely to catch a few more ZZZZs and not be rushed to set up in the morning.

Damn, that's close... I think I'm about 60 mins w/o traffic. I'd have to leave my place on the east side of Dallas far too early
The first 8 people that cornerwork half the day will get to ride the other half for free. Work morning/ride afternoon or ride morning/work afternoon. Call Marty at AMS to sign up
Is it a normal, track opens at 7:00am kind of day? Usually the bike first session doesn't hit the track before 9 as I recall... Plenty of time to sleep in [moto]
Yep normal trackday... I'm making it a weekend event for myself since I don't get much time off anymore. I'd much rather wake up at 7 am and be all set up than driving from the east side of Dallas at 530 to get there set up, go through tech... blah, blah

Hold on! Didn't you get the memo? "Priorities" and "Motorcycle" are mutually exclusive. Ask anybody. Prolly buried down on page eleventy-billion of the loan agreement if I was just guessing... that and the part about handing over your firstborn male child when it comes time to service the #%@&ing things.
Wonder if I can run the Gixxer on the 1.3 during my off sessions.... Its a member day, and the 1.3 is open...

Anybody else signed up for Nov 1?
I think we'll have:
Myself
Tommy
RED
Lisa
I'm out. just bought a swingarm.
Wow is that it? :(
I just bought a CAI for the Tacoma. [thumbsup]
I guess there'll be plenty of space on the track for me then :D

A bit different than last year when DFWM had about 18 people going. Good group going this time too. Getting some practice @ Cresson the week before (thurs. 23) with Jeff and Marty at the AMS private track day. Woo Hoo! I'll be having an extra bike along for the day too!!
We are a maybe on the 1st. Just got rained out today, track was too wet. I wanted a private day before I got out with a larger group, but I guess I don't always get what I want...

Sorry to hear about the private day being canceled. I hope to see most of you guys out at the Nov 1 date.
We wish we would have found out before we wasted the time and fuel getting down there...
learned my lesson this past spring after missing 2 days of work driving to MSR and being rained out. Marty was kind enough to give me his cell and i was able to avoid drive down there and was able to patch together a halfway decent day in the salt mine. Looking forward to next weekend.
REFUND!!!!!!!!!
Well, I did this, emailed Jeff@advancedmotorsports.com at about 5:30am. He called me at 7am to tell me the day was cancelled. I had a fear that that would happen because I talked to Tommy shortly after that he said he had not recieved a call either. There needs to be an event alerting protocol AMS needs to put into place. I'm on the emailing list too so this should have been covered. Looking forward to next weekend with you guys!
+1 [thumbsup]
I called off work yesterday for the private day, haven't been to the track in 2 weeks... :-\ was planning on running the 3.1 on Saturday with LSTD, and ECR Sunday with Ride Smart, then do Nov 1st, which I've already paid for the 2 AMS days.... Then I go to work today to find out I'm put on a new project which is 15 miles west of weatherford and have to work 7 days a week for the next 3 weeks. I wanted to cry....
Did you play kookie and go to the track anyways this weekend?
negative.... :-\
cant afford to take days off right now....5 birthdays and 6 Christmas's to pay for for 5 kids and a gf

The quick and nasty: coming out of horseshoe onto the Big Ben straight I had followed a 1098 all around the track a full lap before being able to over take him. I'm following Jeff's line in front of me as he goes around the outside of the corner. I had his line perfectly until the squid patrol in front of me stopped to go around the corner and some went wide right into my line. I thought, what the hell, I'll just ride through the grass and catch back up...forgot that the lowest part of the track in at the head of Big Ben and found some slop. Couldn't keep the bike up straight and just fell over at about 5-10 mph. Good thing I had just bought a back protector! That I think was the sole factor in me being able to walk upright this morning! Buy one! as far as the bike is concerned it is in really good shape because the mud softened up the whole ordeal. I must replace the left turn signal and replace the gear shifter and fairing stay because it cracked but no plastic was hurt and the bike cleaned up really nice.
Samsonite, you might want to jump on this one pretty quick...(wink wink)
QuoteI'm hurtin....!
That makes two of us. Sorry about being slow in front of you. At that point my legs were killing me and my hands were getting a bit numb.
Me and the wife dropped by around 2p to watch for a bit. [thumbsup] Now she's interested in the idea of the track too!
I must say, that KTM was loud as f*ck.
While we were there, nobody went down, but the guy on the other track did eat it right around the time we were leaving, which kind of screwed things up it seemed. Watching the Desmo go around was pretty neat, but he didn't look as fast as Nash did on the Bayliss LE.
Marty had that camera mounted to his fairing, hopefully he'll post a video somewhere where we can see how good the footage is.
The track was nicer than I expected, It'll be really nice when they finish the construction on the road in, and they really ought to put power out in the pit area for you guys. I'm not really interested in buying a generator for track use... [roll]
Yep, very, very FUN day! A good time was had by all. All that is unless you're my left knee puck, haha [evil] Ground the bugger down but good. O.K. not really good - most would consider the puck scrapage a mere flesh wound... But hey, draggin' a knee is draggin' a knee (and crapping your pants 'cause you've got no idea what just happened!)
It was very cool to hang out with The Gang; there are so many accomplished riders in our group it's an awesome sight to see (as they whiz past, becoming a dot on the horizon [bang] ). Raised my game, that's for sure [thumbsup]
I also got a chance to ride a two-stroke 125 Aprilia RS for a session. Now THAT is a hoot and a half. I think I may trade in the Sprint and get the mini-mo just for track days... I feel like I've dodged a bullet everytime I come off the track with my 999; no track day damage so far, but I've been really lucky.
Anyway, thanks to Jason for bring me an extra chair to plop in, and RED and Bryant for bringing some much needed shade, and to everyone else for the excellent friendship.
Y'all rock 8)
Lisa! We saw you under or near the big canopy in the afternoon but Milli was too chicken to ask you how you got into riding on the track and what not (despite meeting you at barbecue recently). I am going to poke and prod her next time, she had a grin from watching, and would go bananas after some inspiration talks

Fun stuff as always... [thumbsup]
I'm glad to see all those that came out.
Josh, sorry to have missed you out at the track. You'll have to get an SS for track duty soon! (FYI, the owner of the D16RR ran his 998 and 996 in the morning... talk about a trailer with some nice rides)
Tommy, you my friend are quick out there. I'm jealous of the track time you've got under your belt.
Charlie, bummer about the laydown and the issues w/ your suit
Lisa, great to see you abuse your knee puck... FYI I have your Pegram autograph'd picture in my truck... I 'll drop it by Motopia for you this week.
Jacob, still miss your S2R?
Jason, it was fun chasing the HST special for a few laps
I walked around to see if I could see you guys at one point, and saw Tommy pulling into the pits one time, but other than that - it was a zoo of people - Toni told me 90 folks came out, and there were certainly around 100 ducs, which was really cool to see.
Interestingly, as we were coming down 377 we passed another D16RR riding northbound... Thought that was interesting, I wanted to say "HEY, YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY".
Yeah, that dude left sometime after lunch. I was probably out in the hotpits waiting for my session when you showed up
Fun times yesterday. I feel like I got hit by a freight train this morning. I got home around 8, fell into bed and got about 12 hours of sleep.
Great to see the whole crew out there yesterday and had a real good time thrashing the new 848. Ron, it was a blast following you around the track, and what can I say about Larry Pegram. That dude absolutely flies and doesn't even look like he's putting in any effort. Ron and I were coming through horseshoe and he ran right up our inside and proceeded to pull away through the double apex onto the back straight. I've got my knee down coming through boot hill and tombstone and he's just got his butt hanging off, no knee, not much lean and powers out and gone. Those guys are on another planet. I think you need a certain mindset to go that fast for sure. Perhaps one of the big boy riding schools would be a good investment this year to work on better form and technique.
The 848 is such a beast in every way compared to my old S2R. The braking forces I could achieve are insane.. got the rear off the ground braking into big ben. A steering damper might be a good investment soon. I got a lot of headshake on hard acceleration when the front would get real light or come off the surface a bit.
Thanks Bryant for letting us use your area to hang out and congrats to everyone that improved and got faster yesterday! See you guys at a trackday next year I hope.
I do want to shout out a great big ol thank you to Bryant and Jacob for helping me load the Ducs yesterday afternoon. I was in a great deal of hurt and they came to my rescue. [thumbsup] The way I see it is that I owe you guys a night at the Monk, or Idle Rich, or Black Friar or wherever! Thanks guys! [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Bah, Bryant did all the work!
I just want to say it was great fun hanging out with ya'll. What a great group of peeps!
I think I could do a track day every week and not get tired of it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels like they got hit by a bus.
Had a blast hanging out and seeing everybody have fun and learn stuff. Very cool seeing Jester get bumped up to the advanced group and hang with them. That's a huge change going from the Monster to the 848 and already be that comfortable on it.
Too bad it's at the end of track day season. After I recover, I'll be ready to do some more.
Just curious if anyone made it out to Urbino's on Saturday night to hang with Pegram and the AMS gang. Couldn't make it, we had kid trick or treat stuff in Rockwall to deal with. I would imagine that anyone planning on hitting the AMS track day on Sunday would want to be in bed at a decent hour on Saturday night. I'm guessing a lot of track day folks didn't go. Would much rather have been at Urbino's than with the trick or treat crowd! [bang] Wanted to go by AMS on Saturday and meet Larry and snag an autograph for my Ducati book but couldn't make that work either.
Glad the track day attendees had a good time. [thumbsup]
I went...
I arrived at Urbino's at 7:00 PM on the Monster and found Jeff, Mark Nash, Larry, Keith Smith, who is the US Importer for GG Quad, and his friend, Wendy, just hanging out at one of the outside benches. Jeff motioned me over and Larry and Mark made room for me. Talk ranged from one subject to another, bikes, business travel, the economics of running a racing team, Haga's disappointing 2nd place WSBK season, persons of mutual acquaintance, concealed carry and favorite carry pieces, Ducati's onetime plan to market a cruiser, and the administration of the Dallas D.A.'s office under Craig Watkins (Wendy's boss); all seasoned with the occasional ribald tale and crude joke.
Cory and Jordan showed up with Cory's parent's. Nice folks. A guy named Romeo, and couple other people I didn't get to meet.
Muskrat and Mrs. E rolled in on the Largest Harley I Have Ever Seen :o They and I were the only ones riding, I think everyone else caged it. You're right, the DFWMers I saw Sunday at the track were notably absent. Poopers! :P
The weather was perfect, young women in scanty halloween cotumes were occasionally visible going into the clubs at either side of Urbino's, conversation and company were very convivial. Pizza was OK.
Sorry, Fastwin, you missed a truly nice evening.
Does anyone have Romeo's contact info? He told me he would email me a pic of me and Pegram.... But I forgot to get it from him.
Holy cow! Did everyone see the exhaust on his streetfighter? The first time I looked at a streetfighter in envy.....saweet!
Red, my 2 autographed pics are in the RBR RV... Please take care of them for me.
Jan, (Jduc) from dfwducati.com posted these photos that her husband Monte took of her on her 749R and Joel on his 749S. I'm in a lot of Jan's photos, and some others may be in there too, it's hard to tell on my phone.

On a side note, I know my 900 can get around the track alot faster than I'm making, but I am riding it pretty damn hard... But there was a stock 696 that I just couldn't pass, if anyone knows him, tell him/her, damn, good job.

Wow, sounds like a great time. Did you catch Wendy's last name? My wife and I might know her. We worked at the Crowley courthouse for years. I personally know Watkins from when he was a PD, then private defense attorney and when he ran a bail bond company. My wife was a felony probation officer for 15 years and I was a State Distict court coordinator which means I ran the courts for State District criminal court judges. It's not like TV! [bang] My nickname for Crowley was the "House of Pain". :P
Sorry I missed the Urbino throw down, would have liked to met Pegram.

As far as the LP autographed posters in the RBR RV they are still there and in fine shape. I can barely move into the Jeep to get to work much less go out and get into the RV at this time but you're more than welcome to come by and grab them at your leisure.
One more congrats to Dan THE MAN who rode the piss out of that Tard Sunday! I'll be posting some video that I got of the day later today when I get home. You'll know it's Dan because he's the one who is head and shoulders taller than anyone on the track! Good job!
Are there any links to any other picture galleries out there? I called Hart photography and they actually were not in attendance, so unless someone else was out there, we didn't get any professional photos. I'm really sad about that.

Yeah, that sucks... but I was talking to a guy from Louisiana on his 1098 and his son took a bunch of shots from the cornerwork shelter. He's going to try and get in touch w/ Jeff and/or Toni to get them the shots.
I didn't take the time to adjust the color on these yet, but I will do so shortly. We definitely didn't bring an appropriate lens.

Coming out of Wagon Wheel, someone had a camera pointed at the track everytime I glanced at the flag potition.
I assumed it was someone from Hart Photog.

Hart definately wasn't there. I called their offices and they said that they didn't realise it was a full trackday and covered a ridesmart in Houston instead. They apologized, but I do hope somebody else got good shots. Maybe another company was there?
It sounds like maybe another company SHOULD have been there!! Sounds like it's time for a little competition for Hart...hmmm...new career? NAH! he he

I didn't take the time to adjust the color on these yet, but I will do so shortly. We definitely didn't bring an appropriate lens.

Well, these two came out pretty well! Just look at the fine pattina on that fine Rock Bottom Racing RV and the stylish
UPRIGHT positioning on that rider Good stuff!! ;D ;D
Ok, I know there are those who want to know and see so here goes. Good bad or indifferent don't be shy on the comments he he he... ;D [thumbsup]

Man, that sucks. Been there, done that (twice in fact just in differrent corners [bang] ). Two observations: get your braking done earlier (before you turn in for the corner) and always look where you want to go.
My .02. YRMV :)
Yeah, it looked like you were upright way past the turn in point. Looked like you went off track across from your clip point, which is on the opposite side of the track. Were you braking hard? Hard to tell on my phone...
I may not have had the time to tell you what was going on before. I posted this last lap because the rider in front of me would not let me through. I was faster in the corners but he'd gun it in the straights. I finally had the chance on the run up to the faux paux. As I came around him I had been following Jeff's line as much as possible. I had his line coming into Big Ben on the outside. I had a clear way around until the group in front of me slowed way down to make the turn and came wide in front of me. My intention was to go around on the outside which I had plenty of room. If I had just leaned on over and ridden the line out I would have crashed into the back of the guy in front of me because he moved over into my line. I had no where to go. And yes, I was hard on the brakes which is why I didn't go over hard.
Up until this incident I had been riding very well through the corners and passing bikes in the straights. What I should have done was to just stop and not try to continue the line around the outside.
I need to go back out this weekend something bad!! [bang]
Jeff plainly stated not to try to pass in the turns in beginner group. If you couldn't get by, you could have went through the hot pit to get a gap between you.
Yeah, I got bumped out of the Beginner group after I passed a group of 6 or so in Big Bend... whoops
I have a lot of work to do to get up to speed with the 848, I felt very rusty. But by the end of the day I felt better in seat. The new clutch was great, but I had to learn my brake points all over again, since I was able to stomp the gears down and not worry about the rear. I can brake much later than I was on Sunday

Yeah, I think one of the spookiest things for riders is the first time you have a bike get stuffed underneath you when in a corner and not expecting it. In one respect since beginners aren't leaned over very far, its not the end of the world, but it can really catch you out of sorts if its never happened to you before. After a couple times, you get comfortable with corner traffic and adjusting line accordingly, but its definately a safety concern with folks that are still getting their feet wet and having a hard enough time with lines, track vision, and confidence.
Talking about braking points and lean angle brings up a question I've had regarding knee dragging...
I took a wild off track excursion at Cresson a while back because I misjudged my corner entry speed and had to front-brake hard. Of course when I did, the bike stood up and shot straight off the track - at only a slightly reduced speed I might add [bang] [laugh]
So my question is: do track riders drag a knee to accurately judge lean angle or are they hanging off so they can off-set the gyroscopic effect of trail braking? Combination of both? Or Option No. 3, The Combo Platter, because it just looks pretty damn cool? [evil]
I've always thought hanging off was to preserve lean angle and thus tire contact patch - keeps the bike more upright, but it turns the same as if you were on it but leaned way the heck over.
I know part of the bike standing up when I am all over the brakes also has a lot has to do with my sometimes panicked glances at the ditch/curb/shoulder/field/cowpie/barn/leo (not dicaprio)
Since I know nothing about track days or riding fast I can't help you Lisa. The only reason I dangle my leg like Rossi is because my knee hurts and it needs to be straightened out. [bang]
Knee draggin is really a product of three things imo. Number one, if you're hanging off the bike and are cornering hard enough, your knee is going to touch the ground regardless unless you are just trying to hold it against the bike. Its also a good feeler for how deep your lean angle is and in expert hands can be used to help save front end slides or when the bike is just pushing in general.
Hanging off itself, as said above is to preserve lean angle so to speak and also helps lower the c.o.g. of the bike/rider combo enabling a more stable cornering environment. Its also an evolution of style, as it came hand in hand with the introduction of radial tires and better compound tires. In the old days, the tires couldn't support lean angles like today anyway, so there was no need for hanging off. It was more of a point and shoot strategy.
I had a few moments this last Sunday myself with braking, although I was really starting to push the limits of my late braking abilities in order to make up time coming into the corners. Once the rear starts to come off the ground, I think braking force is 100% lol. You can definately still corner while under braking, but the effort to get the bike turned and stay turned increases by quite a bit. I know for a fact I can enter corners faster than I do, its just a matter of practice, more body position improvement, and confidence. Tip that thing into the corner and trust the bike!
I could have done things a bit different folks I agree. I was trying very hard to do what I was taught in the RideSmart track days I've attended recently. If you'll go back and look at the video again you'll see the fellow in front of me putting on a lean like he's Ben Spies! He's honkin on the straights but he's going way slower than I am in those corners. I was hanging back letting him go as not to break the rule of no passing in the corners in the beginner group. I had two chances to take him but did not for fear I would be black flagged. So the issue of riding through was not necessary. Yes, I could have done that but knew that all I had to do was to wait till BB to get around. The thing about getting stuffed by slower riders as happened in this instance is that you have no control over what they do. As stated earlier I was braking hard enough to stop but I was trying to maintain my line following Jeff around the outside. When the door was closed I had no where to go but stand the bike up and ride it through the grass. I had already made my decision what to do before getting to the corner. Anywhere else on the track would have been fine because it would have been dry but this one particular place is where the water goes over the track at the start of that curve out of Big Ben and there was a little creek that I bumped over which made me .... fall over. :'( I was totally embarrassed too :-[ :-[ :-[ But then I try to give tob something to talk about too [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] (peace guys [thumbsup] )
If I had not already had two other recent track days and 30+ years of riding the results could have been different
;D I really like the Ernie Kovacs style soundtrack with your video Red ! You may have run out of track but you kept your sense of humor! Sorry to interrupt - back to the relative merits of knee dragging... [roll]

Music and humor get me through my life. ;D
You should try my Blips then! http://blip.fm/RedDucati (http://blip.fm/RedDucati)
Well, it's very relatable too. Mi amore de la musicale tropicale (sp?) reaches far and wide. I first heard the tune on HBO's Real Sex series years ago and liked it. My love of Ducati is sorta like that and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, imo. Its part of riding. Remember, rear brake is the go-to in the dirt (a la dirtbiking, my only balls-to-the-wall riding experience).
Jester is right on draggin the knee thing. If you look up the Rossi interview on cornering he precisely states the reason he as others do is to guage the amount of lean you have AND to sometimes correct the corner balance in the apex. His reasoning is this coming into a corner, brake-brake, hard brake-hard brake, lean, rear brake-a little throttle, lean-knee-knee-knee, smooth power, lean opposite (pulling the bike back up) more power, no rear brake/no front brake, full power out.
Now, if I could just remember all that in a two second timespan. :o ;D
I think it also depends on how fat you are.....lol
I get around the track alot faster than some people who are grinding their pucks off, and I'll never touch a knee. But when I shift my 250 pounds to the inside, it's a whole lot different than a 150 pounder doing the same. :)

Guilty as charged!
I'm not nearly as quick as Tommy, but I do get the puck on the ground.
