ATT seems to be universally detested, so unless they are extra special in your area......

I bought a 3g the week they came out. I't been incredibly handy on my travels.  I will admit that At&t wasn't the greatest when I got the phone even frustrating. But they have really improved their service areas locally and abroad. I'm not sure when it will happen, but other service providers will be adding iphones soon.

I'm also a mac user so having an iphone is natural and never have to think twice about syncing contacts, music, videos, pictures, ect, ect... between all of my computers and even a web cloud. The service plan is a little high for a single user, but then again i went with hi minutes and unlimited text and data.

You can currently get refurbished iphones for around $50 off the apple website, then you'll be looking at $80-150 for service plans. Another plus is there's one of the biggest selection of protective cases you'll ever see available for them. And there's an unbelievable amount of apps for the iphone and a lot of them are free-$2,  though you'll see some for up to $40. There's also lots of breaks for the phone allowing more customizations and you can even tether it to your computer/laptop for internet.

I've been a member of the Apple Cult since the late '80s and have had AT&T for nearly
that long. I bought a 3G a year ago and have had zero problems with it. Ditto on ease of
synching with my iBook. One of the best things about Apple is the Genius Bar at their stores. Make an appointment for your free 20 minutes of whatever. They are truly genius!

I added an international calling/texting plan when I went to England and Holland in July and
it was fabulous.

plus don't forget, you get mega cool points with an iPhone

iPhone. Posting this now from mine. I've had it for about two months. Can't imagine being without it anymore. I haven't had any service problems with AT&T. Anywhere around the cities the 3g network is great and the Internet is super fast. Outside the cities without 3g it's a little slower but still works. It's pretty much a tiny computer. The apps are useful and a lot are free. The thing I was worried about before I got mine was the touch screen and small keyboard, but it is really easy to use. No regrets about mine. And they finally have video and picture messaging. Plus I get 20percent off my bill through work so that helps too  ;D

the apps are great!   I've actually used the maps feature once this summer to figure
out where the hell when I got lost on a back road. Now I don't leave home without
it.

the guy at tmobile mentionned smthg about unlockin the Iphone or maybe it was a buddy of mine , can't remember now. I compared the plan between Tmobile and Att and it came to be about the same for both phones with the data plan. So now I own an Iphone  ;D

Well....  You got me at a VERY bad time on this subject.
I just picked up a spanking new iPhone 3Gs about 4 days ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. Won't call out, won't receive, goes to voice-mail after 2 rings and doesn't set a call indicator. I spent about 1.5 hours with ATT "tech support."  They finally gave up and told me to take it back to the Apple store.

I get there and THEY tell me that ATT is having trouble with the 3G network. Just shut off 3G and it will work. I does, but what a bunch of crap. The "geniuses" were booked up with other irate iPhone users until tomorrow so I guess I'll see tomorrow what they're going to do.

The phone does really amazing things bit it don't work for SHIT. Both companies blame the other and I sit with no phone.

That sucks. You probably just got a bad phone though. The only issues I've had with mine is that every oncr in awhile I can't access the 3g network. Just have to shut it off and turn it back on and all is well. I have found that you should shut it off every day or so or it will do some odd things. Congrats on the phone mo, you'll love it. Did you get the 16 or 32 gig?

That thing still working for you Mo?

They gave me a new phone this morning when the "genius" finally realized it was only 4 days old.  [roll]  Don't know if there was actually anything wrong with the old one, but the "genius" recommended a new one so what the hell.

They claimed that ATT rolled out some new MMS (whatever that is) that was clogging up the system. Lots of complaints about dropping 3G, delays, blah, blah. If you do have problems try tuning off 3G. It will switch to the "Edge" network. It works as a temporary workaround to get your calls and voice mails.

Seems like this phone is working better, but it might just be coincidental with ATT getting the bugs worked out.

Whatever, I have a more positive opinion today. It is an amazing contraption.

BTW, I picked up a 2006 S2R 1000. Looks just like your "polecat" used to when it was unmolested.  :P

Totally stock, 6,800 miles with 1 inch chicken strips so I don't think it's even broke in yet.  8)

Glad you got a new phone. Congrats on the bike too. The mms feature they were talking about is the picture and video messaging. They just added it about a week ago and apparently they are being overloaded with all the new data being sent. I haven't noticed a change in my 3g or calling network though :-\ do I guess your mileage may vary.

Weird, I feel like I'm threadjacking just to answer the original post.

I've had an iphone since December. Love the phone. HATE AT&T.

Does it randomly not accept calls? Yep. But that happens to everyone I know on ATT, so it's an ATT issue and not an iphone issue. My phone won't ring and then I'll have a voicemail. That's the only issue I've had with the phone. I haven't been disconnected mid call or anything like that.

As for the APPs, you really can get an app for just about anything. Decibel meter? Yep. Gearing calculator? Yes. Etc. etc. The App store is easy to use and the apps themselves are great.

As for the T-mobile Android/Google phone thing. When I had T-mobile I never had a problem with service, never had any billing issues, never felt like I was getting charged extra just because, etc.

That said, the people I know with the "android phones" have had problems with the phones themselves. Part of the issue - as I understand it- is that all the programs for those phones are only tested by the maker of the program, not the maker of the phone. That means that if a program you use causes phone problems, you're on your own. Both people I know that bought one, wish they had the iphone instead and both have had to take their phone back to get it reset or something done to it.

So, I'm happy with my iphone. But I'd love to get it unlocked so I could use it with a different carrier. If I were rich (maybe you are?) I'd buy an unlocked one from hong kong, France or Germany (all of whom apple sells unlocked phones to) and go that route instead.

I'm still having issues....

It's 9:50, ten minutes ago I got one voicemail that was left at 7:30 and another that was left at 8:28. Neither of those calls rang on my phone, they went right to voice mail. I had it in my pocket the whole time. Took over 2 hours for that first voice mail to show up.

The bigger concern is whether some calls and voice mails are getting dropped completely... no way to know unless someone tells you they called and didn't get through. But they can't call you to tell you so Catch 22...  [bang]

Have you tried turning 3G off and going to the "Edge" network? You might have voice mail out there that you have no way of knowing about...

Fine, I'll contribute to this thread without threadjacking for a second. Kim has had an iphone for a while. (year at least) I absolutely hate the thing. In the time that she's owned it, I have successfully completed maybe three phone calls to her. I just don't even try to call her anymore. It's completely worthless in my opinion. It's a toy to brag about and that's it.

The battery seems to last for about an hour.

The gps fails every single time we try to use it. One day, we circled a few blocks for about ten minutes because it was so wrong that it had us screwed up.

It encourages people to act like idiots when around others. Maybe I'm old fashioned, or maybe I was just raised with manors but I see people constantly being sucked into these things while trying to have conversation. I'm sorry but your little box with the fancy gadgets has turned you into a zombie.

The whole not getting signals thing just ticks me off. Long story short: A couple of months ago, I was on top of a mountain in Montana mountainbiking with another guy, we were lost, we were in shorts, it was snowing, nightime was approaching. We were trying to call some of the locals to help us find the downhill trail to get off this mountain and precious time was running out. I know that getting a signal at over 10,000 feet is difficult at best but guess who's phone did not work? That's right, the guy with the iphone.

The only people that like them are, people that have not actually owned one, or had any experience with them but think that the idea is great, and the people that do own them and are in denial. Ask them about how much they suck and the owners will tell you, "no, it's awesome! look at these cool apps that I have"

I hate that stupid, worthless, pretentious, overpriced, piece of garbage little box.  [beer]

The "no signal" issue is an issue with every phone company. Until they all decide to share their networks, it'll always be an issue.

In LA, I was staying at a hotel and neither I, nor any of the other people I work with, could get a signal in our hotel rooms. I asked at the front desk and was asked what phone company I had (T-mobile at the time). When I told him, he told me to walk outside, turn left, walk ten feet and then stop. Poof, perfect signal. The producer I was with had ATT, she had to walk outside, turn right and walk ten feet. Poof, perfect signal. Outside of that random area, no signal.

Very Random...

To turn off 3G go Settings/General/Network and you'll see a slider to disable 3G.

I know, I know. ;D But believe it or not, there was proper planning involved. Down on the ground it was sunny and warm but when you get up real high, the weather changes constantly. I got rained, hailed, and snowed on during that ride but most of it was warm and sunny. We went from hot and shedding layers, to freezing wet, cold and fingers going numb, back to hot and shedding layers, etc. The weather changed every once in a while.
The real issue was missing our trail down. I was just using that as one example of the many times that the iphone has let me down. Just trying bring a little humor that's all. [thumbsup]

Well my 3rd Motorola Razor just died on me.  That's gotta be the worst mass produced piece of electronic equipment ever.  I have a 30yr old walkman that still works.  Sure a big difference in the complexity of the two devices but still...

Because i'm with Top-Mobile I did check out the google mytouch phones.  $500!  What!  That price is only to force you into the $300 instant rebate contract plan.  I just hate tactics like that.  But marketers do it all the time.  $.20/text message is priced that way only to force you into one of their text messaging plans.

"Our prices are competitive" the T-mobile customer service tech told me.  I didn't know that meant they raise their prices to match everyone elses'.  I thought that meant they keep their prices as low as possible to beat the competition.  I hate being a part of the system.  It's actually appealing to go phone free but I'd lose many freelance gigs I get and the convenience factor (I'll just call you when i get there and then we can meet up) would be lost.

Thus concludes my rant.

I freely confess that I want to get an iphone.   ;D  We have an iTouch that we got for 'free' when we bought a new MacBook, and it's really a neat bit of electronic gadgetry.  That iTouch has only served to whet my appetite for an iPhone when the time comes.

These stories about ATT's service are troubling, though.  I have been patiently waiting 'til the end of my 2yr Sprint contract to bail on them and get an iPhone.  (I'm too cheap to pay $150 to terminate my Sprint contract early... :-\ )

Is ATT's service really that bad here in the Cities?  Or can much of this be attributed to 'operator error'?  (I"m lookin' at you, Ross. ;) )

The biggest problems with the iphones are actually out in New York, LA and SF. The network in those areas is pretty overloaded. There are three people in different parts of New York that I call frequently and our phone calls constantly get disconnected. I use the iphone for these calls because mobile to mobile calls are free. Around here, I don't have any real connection problems. I do have voicemails that appear out of nowhere. Even as much as I hate ATT, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another iphone (in fact I did when the first one I had was stolen).

People can fun of the apps, all they like. The right app can be very handy.

Things I do regularly with my phone:
Read email attachments (PDF, word docs and xcel documents)
Surf the web (again, other phones can do this, but not as well)
Wells Fargo banking (transfers, pay bills, etc)
Map out directions (also shows the best buses to take, if that's how you travel)
Take photos and shoot video (camera on the 3GS is pretty decent)
Shazam (tells me what song is playing in a car, bar or wherever it's being played)
i.tv (lets me connect to my tivo so I can record a TV program while I still remember what the show is called)
Trapster (sends alerts for common police "waiting" areas)
Facebook
Twitter

I'm sure there's a bunch more I'm not thinking of.

A minor tangent here - we've loaded some excellent game apps into our iTouch.

My favorite is called "MotoX Mayhem", and you control a motocross bike over some crazy off-road courses. The game makes great use of the accelerometer, and it's thoroughly addicting.  Perfect for waiting rooms, airport lounges, etc., and it only costs $.99.   I highly recommend MotoX Mayhem to my fellow MADDOG folks, but be warned - it's a huge time-waster.   ;D

Another great app/game is F.A.S.T.  Fleet Air Superiority Training.  You fly fighter jets (F14, F15, F16, Stealth fighter, etc.).  You can play your favorite iTunes playlist in the background.  You shoot down bad guys.  It, too, only costs $.99. It's really fun.   [evil]

You can thank me later, Mo.   ;D ;)

Mo and I played a little voice mail tag this morning to see if things were working. I got his voice mails, but I had 3G disabled. Mo had 3G enabled and he got my messages, but later in the day (11:00am) I left him another one and I haven't heard back from him... so what is that? Did he just not respond, or did he not get the voice mail? No way to know without calling him and if it goes to voice mail again?

WHere the hell is MO anyway? This IS his thread. Maybe he's out looking for his cat...

I'm not all worked up about it. My phone works fine as a phone on the "Edge" network for now. I'm sure the 3G bugs will get worked out in time.

Just make sure you don't go Mtn biking with Gabe in shorts in the snow in MT.  [laugh]

Where is your sense of adventure?  [cheeky]  I didn't even talk about the scariest part of the trip...being on the side of a mountain trail in the FJ Cruiser where the trail is barely wide enough to fit on, going through deep mud, and looking down at thousands of feet just praying that the mud doesn't pitch me off. Now that was scary.

well, if we're onto apps now, I have a few favs.   Flight Control and Touch Physics
I play either one when I'm commuting to St. Louis. But Flight Status sucks.

OK I must post to this thread.  Most of you know where my old part time job was.  I am an Apple fanatic.  With that said I have had an Iphone for about 2 years now.  I have the origional 3G.  The phone is not bad.  I have a different relationship with phones than most people.  Before I got an Iphone I almost rarely even turned it on.  I try to ignore calls on my phone because I work at a job (teaching) where possessing a phone all the time is not a good example.  So I don't wear it.  It normally sits in my bag all day off so that I can teach instead of answer calls.  So when Gabe actually calls me on it, most of the time it is OFF.  That doesn't mean it doesn't work.  I just choose to turn on the phone when I want, like in boring meetings so I can read my email, or surf the internet for ideas for projects in my classes.  I digress.
My phone has worked more often than it hasn't worked.  I was sceptical when I first got the phone whether ATT would be as bad as they were when they were Singular, which was the last itme I had them.  In the state of MN we have decent Att service.  Outside of MN I am not so sure.  I do know that on the Drive to Big Sky my phone worked 85% of the time where as other folks in my car did not.  Enough Said.

Now I have to speak to a problem that some of you Iphone users probably don't think about nor consider.
Cell phones should never be used for financial information.  Please DO yourself a huge favor and PASSLOCK your phone.  If you do not you can be an easy target for Identity theft.  The phone contains all of your info and without too much digging into it a would be criminal can and will steal your info because all they have to do is surf the same places you went to get your financial info.  Also DO NOT SURF on a PUBLIC wireless network to financial institutions because the network can be compromised.
Finally enable remote wipe.  In fact enable the button that says that if someone trys a wrong password 10 times to automatically wipe the phone.  That way if a teen-y-bopper picks it up and starts playing with it it wipes your info.  Unless you want to be called by Jake in the middle of the night pulling a prank.  lol
Now with that said if you are using the phone with Mac's Mobile me service all of your info will have been backed up automatically in at least one place and if you own a Mac in at least two places.  Please IM me if you would like to know more about the services that compliment your phone.

If you are still having problems with the Iphone make sure you have done ALL software and carrier updates.  This is easy.  Plug phone into MAC or PC and Itunes will prompt you for the rest.  If this fails.  Book a Genius Appt at your local Apple Store or call 1-800-APPLECARE.
