Ducati unveiled the 696 tonight at Chicago Cycle and I had a chance to ask one of their marketing guys some questions. Basically, I was told the 696 is the basis for the future of the Monster line.
Also, it's uncertain if there will be another 1000cc Monster, but when pushed, he admitted that a Monster with an 848 engine is a possibility.
not that i have any insider info or anything.... ;) but next year should see the same line up they have in 08. but look for the newer model to get engine upgrades in late 09... as 2010 models.
I don't know but to me the bottom of the 848 looks a bit exposed to be naked

If you're talking about the deep oil sump, its about the same on the current S4Rs.
You could fit a skid plate to it. Indeed, the Testastretta engines have a deep oil sump, to assure positive oil flow to the pump in all riding atitudes :o
I hope they fit the 1100 mill we see in the Hyper to the monster, or a derivation of it, or a 1000 mill that shares a lot of the 696. The 2v air cooled monster is the essential Monster. Sure an 848 power plant is cool n all but then you've got the radiator... the lines.. the over flow...
We can expect the 1100 mill and probably the 848 and 1098 engines. I saw the 696 for the first time yesterday. It feels nice to sit on, shorter and more modern that the current range, not unlike the Triumph Street Triple. Personally I don't like the styling, it may grow on me. The cut-outs in the tank are one of the worst style points.
boy, do i wish i was there to meet a marketing [puke] [puke] dude [evil] he would never forget me, thats for shure :o

I really hope the 1100 mill from the hypermotard makes to the new monster [thumbsup]

Why not just get the HM? It looks a hell of a lot better than the 696 IMO so what is the point in making a "696 style monster" with the bigger engine?

Hopefully the new 1100 Monster would have a larger fuel tank than the HMT. The ridiculously small fuel tank on the HMT is a deal breaker...at least for me. :-\ I'd love to have one if it wasn't for that.

Agreed 1000 percent was looking at one the other day 2 things did it for me the 14k price tag and the short ranged fuel tank.

I'm not sure why everyone is so anxious to get the 1100cc engine that currently puts out less HP than the 1000cc version.
As for the 4V Monsters, I believe they are going away. The replacement will not be a Monster but something along the lines of the Aprilia Tuono. A SBK with a chopped fairing and a set of handle bars.
The 848 engine is great in the SBK but is too refined and lacks the low end punch that defines the Monster.
I got to see a 675 Daytona and a Street Tripple up close this weekend and they are the same bike. but the look very different. Ducati could do the same thing with the 848. Different Tank, seat headlight, and bars & call it something else. I think the Triumphs had different suspension bits as well with the Daytona having the adjustable stuff.

Seems like the 1100 puts out more HP, but less Torque.
Here's a link to a bunch of dyno runs by Ducati Seattle. There's a Hypermotard and an S2R1000 with similar exhaust/engine mods. The 1100 puts out about 86HP/68T, while the 1000 puts out 82 HP/65T.
Close either way.
