Title: Moto Guzzi Griso
Post by: Westy on October 10, 2009, 05:25:39 PM
Been lurking here off and on for a while now...never really posted on the main board...just on MADDOG.  I was wondering what you guys think about the new 8V Moto Guzzi Griso.  I was thinking about getting one...but make no mistake, I'm keeping my 2001 M900.  I was thinking it would be a good/cool second bike to have when I wanted to ride something different.  Any thoughts or experience with the brand?

Link to pics and more info on the bike?

I stepped foot in a Guzzi shop a couple of years ago.  I like the history behind the engine and how it looks on a few of the models, but DAMN are they heavy.....not a single bike was under 500lbs dry!

Didn't take long for someone to find a workaround for that muffler....

Griso is cool.  Looks cool, sounds cool, comfy, nice cruising bike.

Heavy, limited dealer support.

Do you really want another air-cooled, V-Twin, Italian bike as a second bike.

What kind of riding do you do?

If you ride long distance, think about adding a sport tourer instead of the Griso.

If it lights your fire, then buy the Griso and enjoy and be happy and stop worrying about what I think.

Cheers. [moto]

Exactly my first thought then realized I want a Multi so who am I to judge.

I just traded my '05 1200GS for an '07 Griso 1100 today. Rode it for about 110 miles. So far I really like it. Kind of like a Monster, but not as sporty as far as handling or engine response...but still a blast. Heavy, but never really feels heavy because the weight is carried very low. The GS felt WAY WAY heavier. Looks beautiful IMO...sounds amazing with the Agostini megaphone exhaust mine came with. Just a cool bike that is fun to ride.

Note, the 1100 is the 4 valve version. The 1200 is supposed to be a good engine, but it did have a couple recalls. Poke around the Guzzi Tech forum. Dealer support can be bad...I'm not worried about it though because we have one of the best Guzzi dealers in the country here (Moto International)...they're also fairly simple engines as far as I ca tell so I intend on learning to work on it.

Beautiful bike J3!!!

I've been lusting after these for years.  I sat on one here in Raleigh, but that dealer (or any dealer around here AFAIK) doesn't offer test rides (at least not to me).

Triple J,  I dig that black frame.  Did they have to disassemble the bike to paint it?

Thanks! That sucks about your dealer...ours will let you demo anything they have.

From what I understand taking the frame off of this bike is really easy...so yeah, they took it off to have it powdercoated. Looks way better than silver IMO.  [thumbsup]

So are you going to leave it like it is or are you gonna start modding it.

I plan on getting new tires, a windscreen for the winter, and a Ventura bag system. No mods other than that.

Of course, I said that about the Multi when I got it too!  [laugh]

One of my favourite bikes the Griso..... [thumbsup]  Would love to own one some day.  With the black frame it looks like a Griso 850 - which I like the look of best coz of that black frame, but also since the 850 is happy to run on hot oil you get to look at more of that lovely engine without the oil cooler spoiling the view.

I don't know about the engine view on the 850 Griso.  That Guzzi engine provides too much visual mass.  It looks too much like a car engine with that deep oil pan hanging off the bottom of the engine.  I like it to be broken up.  It helps if the engine is black like on this one:

I also like the look of the engine in the 1200 8V Sport.  With the header pipe on both sides of the engine and a chin spoiler the visual mass of the Guzzi engine is hidden really well.

I thought you might say that.  If you like large engines with jugs that burst out of the sides then Guzzi is the right brand for you.

I'm hoping the green Special Edition Griso with the black wheels will be a 2010 model here in the U.S.  We probably know by the end of the month if they will be bringing it over.  Hopefully they will bring the V7 Cafe Classic too.

Good one LA, I had to fight back the urge to post that one.  I didn't have a reason to other than it was a Guzzi.  I guess you showed that there never has to be a reason to post a picture of a beautiful bike.

Our best local moto shop is run by a Guzzi fanatic -- his "new" shop is fun, with all the new Moto Guzzis and a smattering of new Royal Enfields just for fun, but the real treat is to poke around in his previous location, which he's now running as a mail-order, big-water rafting supply business.  But way back in the back, you'll find both some cool works in progress like this:

I apologize for not showing the whole bike, as that's as far away as i could get & as wide an angle as I could capture in the crowded little work area that's stuffed with old Ducatis, BSAs & Moto Guzzis awaiting their turn on the restoration stand. Out back in the field are the ones that are either there as parts donors or waiting for a turn indoors:

Upstairs (which I found during a party at the place, while looking for the bathroom) is a huge, musty warehouse space packed full of this:

It's not hard.  I like customized Italian bikes, cafe'd bikes, pretty much all European bikes and so do a lot of other people on the interweb.  I check a couple of cool sites every few days.  My current favorite is the SVRider Cafe/2Stroke/Single/Twin/Brit/Euro/Cool Bike Pic Thread: http://forum.svrider.com/showthread.php?t=61824&page=480 (http://forum.svrider.com/showthread.php?t=61824&page=480)

The original V7's were performance bikes back in the day.  They handled well and were fast if driven correctly.  Most people let off just as the bikes were starting to make power at about 5500 rpm. Had to run em hard to make em go.

Love the looks of the new model, it's faithful to the original, but 48 HP?  Give me a break.

Too much money for too little output..... still, I love 'em though.....
