Title: OMADA - the Oz Monster Alpine Ducati Adventure thread
Post by: goldFiSh on November 16, 2009, 01:28:35 AM
Bazz's thread about the Great Alpine Road got me thinking about something that's been hatching for a while..
So I've recently (officially as of today) become a member of a ski lodge in Perisher Valley. The same lodge that matty, dock and I visited last ski season.

It was a little treat and investment for the family holidays for years to come.... however.....

It would also make an awesome home base for some alpine moto adventures!
it can sleep around 20 people, has a garage, large kitchen and loungeroom, a big deck with a bbq and a pool room..

And it's not very booked apart from winter...

So I'm putting it out there to try make an event of a trip away in a nice place with some awesome roads..

And to whet the appetite, here's some day trips around the locale. People who have done the snowy ride, or ridden to the gp or wsbk meets will already know what i am talking about:

perisher - granya rd - perisher (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=perisher+valley&daddr=corryong+to:granya+to:tintaldra+to:perisher+valley&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-36.23668,147.957395&sspn=1.637117,2.48291&ie=UTF8&z=9)

perisher - tumut - khancoban - perisher (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=perisher+valley&daddr=kiandra+to:tumbarumba+to:Khancoban+to:perisher+valley&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-36.367116,148.367615&sspn=0.817204,1.241455&ie=UTF8&z=9)

perisher - road to eden - browns mountain - perisher (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=perisher+valley&daddr=Unknown+road+to:-37.078189,149.870682+to:Snowy+Mountains+Hwy+to:perisher+valley&hl=en&geocode=%3BFcf7zf0dRs3mCA%3B%3BFXhP0f0dij3pCA%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=1,2&mrsp=2&sz=11&via=3&sll=-36.999811,149.772491&sspn=0.405255,0.620728&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.941111,149.037781&spn=1.622264,2.48291&z=9)

perisher - bright - hotham - omeo (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=perisher+valley&daddr=bright+to:omeo&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-36.622141,147.601318&sspn=1.629029,2.48291&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.641978,147.680969&spn=1.62861,2.48291&z=9)

So, is there any interest? I was hoping that we might be able to get people from Vic and NSW (and beyond of course!) to meet up for a couple of days or more, and have some fun in the Alpine when there's no snow. I was thinking around end of march or thereabouts - basically before it the road closes, but not in the middle of summer..

Let me hear what you all think?

Sounds great.... and by March I may just possibly have enough time to garner sufficient marital points to be allowed away from home on a good behavior bond  ;D

So I'm a definite maybe wannabe  ;)

Goldie, its a great idea and we would love to be in but tourismo will be it for us. Holidays are normally a long range plan, generally meaning 12 months plus notification for Jukie (flexibility is a one way thing at her work). We will just have to be content with copious amounts of photos and recollections on the forum.

excellent!

The timing is by no means sorted out as yet - there are a couple of things going on at the lodge (a new road up the hill to the lodge, and a new kitchen to be installed) so it would be good to plan around those events.
Also, I note the WSBK round is Feb28 at PI, so maybe it can be worked around that as well? Also, it may work out that we're trying to organise such a thing in too short of a time frame, and it may be better to wait for a Spring 2010 gathering?

And Mark, don't despair, this could be the start of an annual get together, there will be other times if you can't make this one..

Anyways, it's early planning stages at the moment, I'll just wanted to check interest before persuing any further... Sounds like I have got it!

Anyways, here's some piccys of the place:

Top idea, top area! [thumbsup]

I'd love to come but I'll just need to see where the dates end up and stuff.

Now we just have to come up with a name for the event ...
DMF Tourismo
Annual Perisher Party

Surely someone can come up with some better ideas. [thumbsup]

Our US bretheren have a couple of events called Ducatis In My Back Yard (or DIMBY), and east coast and a west coast one.

They also have DiR or Ducatis in the Rockies

In that theme, here's some  to start:

DITS - Ducatis in the Snowys
AADA - Aussie Alpine Ducati Adventure
OMADA - Oz Monster Alpine Ducati Adventure

Oh, and there may be some issues with doing it early in the year, so we may try for after the skii season to give more planning time....

I am not creative enough to come up with my own, but I like the fleet connotations associated with this one:

Quote from: goldFiSh on November 19, 2009, 05:09:25 PM
OMADA - Oz Monster Alpine Ducati Adventure

assuming it is pronounced armada

Is it possible to have one early (for the ones that don't have to organise so much) - could be a reccy trip - and one later???

One consideration is that later in the year there will be lots of other bike tours in the area.  ie the annual Snowy Ride and the local Harley mob from down this way always go up there in November.

Either way I'm still in.

and OMADA gets my vote too.

Back on topic......

If this goes ahead in 2011 then I'm in. Just too short notice to do it in 2010 with turismo and all.

Sounds like a brilliant idea and I hope it becomes a yearly event.

It might not go ahead as early as thought.
Due to works planned for the Lodge I hear and to perhaps get a few more of us together.
It may be later in the year after the Ski season.

So fear not, if you can't make it for the first time round then I am sure it will ramp up into being
an annual event that more of us can attend each year.

So is anything happening in March?

Pinched this from the MotoGP website:
October 17th Australia (Phillip Island)

In the days leading up to or following we should be available. If you are still thinking of a date later in the year, could/should/would this work?

it's a tentative right now for this year for march - all depends on how the lodge renovations are going...

We're going to the MotoGP with the family this year, so it may work, but likely that I will not have a bike with me :-(

trailer is coming, but perhaps not on that trip - not much point and more of a pain in the arse for the little riding i would be doing..

OK, so here's the low down:

There's a lot of roadworks in Perisher this summer (they're fixing all the roads to the lodges) from Jan to Early March, and shortly after that, there's the new kitchen being installed.

All in all, it's not available to be booked until after Easter...

So in all reality, it's probably not going to happen in Feb / March as originally proposed.
The GP could also be OK, but I'm not 100% on the roads being open - they should be, but who really knows...

There is a chance that there may be a reconnaissance mission this year before the snow falls (more to get our ski gear into our lockers whilst i can still drive up to the door), and if it works out, I'll trailer the monster there to explore..

We'll have to see, but it's likely that this may be a 2011 event - at least if should be well planned...
