This is getting frustrating. The second jacket I have owned has had complete zipper failure. The first was a Scorpion and the second was a Spidi. Both had the zippers that have the small teeth. My Joe Rocket mesh jacket (as ugly and uncomfortable as it is) has a industrial sized zipper that works really well. Anyone have a recommendation on a good cool/cold weather jacket (preferably with a removable liner) that will last more then 6 months?
You could find a local leather shop or a tailor that could whip a real zipper into your jacket for small money.
The plastic 'coil' zippers are lame, the ones with the big plastic teeth are awesome.
have you tried warrantying it?
i have a scorpion zipper, and i agree they are pretty weak sauce zippers to begin with. Both my joe rocket mesh and joe rocket leather jacket have beefy industrials. but ive never had any problems with the scorpion, however i have expected them to suck eventually.
Dainese or Vanson. Things are cheaper when you only have to pay for them once
The zipper on my Vanson is excellent. My money is on Vanson zippers and Keith Richards being the sole survivors of the apocalypse.

It'll just be him and a bunch of cockroaches. He'll look at one and say: Man, I once snorted your uncle. Bloody crazy party.

Well put.
I have checked out a couple of Vansons that I liked, but I am trying to stay away from leather because of where I work. I work for a bearing company and all of the oils, coolants, and other fluids that are "properly filtered from the air" makes your clothes smell horrible. Leather is x10. It seems to just absorb it and you can't get it out.
Any other companies use zippers close to the Joe Rockets? (Teknic, Icon maybe). I don't have access to a couple of these brands locally. Internet pictures don't really tell a zipper story.

I didn't really even explore the warranty with either. This is kind of my "ah well" jacket. My daily home to school to work back home while toting a 25 lbs backpack, work at night and get caught in the morning rain, August - March jacket. I am asking a lot of it. Just need to find a brand that will deliver to goods. Maybe I am asking to much. Joe Rocket does well in the summer. Although, it is pretty gimmicky and I hate to look like a rolling billboard.
Rev-it makes some pretty good textile stuff I hear.
No FHE
which jacket is it?
I have the XDR Shock jacket and its my ...
...go out when its make the beast with two backsing cold jacket
...ice skateing outside jacket
...riding jacket (carrying 25lbs on a regular basis on my kriega)
...touring jacket
...rain jacket
...street jacket
You just cant forcefully tug on the zipper. lube it up with wax to keep it smooth. how is your failing? did it kink up or did it rip off?
I have two Rev'it jackets. Summer Air jacket has been used twice, the Silica has been used every day for two years except a couple of months in winter - more than 20k miles. Not a scratch, still waterproof and all the zippers, buttons and velcro works perfectly. Not cheap, but IMO great quality. Runs small, at least one size smaller than other brands I've worn, Dainese, TourMaster, Spidi.

I've been very happy with my Rev'It jacket, it's probably seen close to 20,000 miles now. [thumbsup]
Had the zipper on my Dianese Ducati jacket crap out on me... Local leather bike shop replaced it for $30 out the door the next day. The gal even asked what kind of zipper I wanted... pulled different options out of a drawer.
If the rest of the jacket is fine, that would be your cheapest option. Just find a shop that deals in HD style leathers... without being a HD dealer. Many of them also offer alterations.

I haven't seen Rev-it jackets. Their gloves are nice. I will check them out if a zipper transplant isn't an option.

Small in the shoulders, waist, or both? (in case I can't find anywhere to try one on)
Smaller, just smaller, arms - waist - shoulders. I believe they are "normal" euro cut, comparable to Dainese as a fit.
i love my field sheer jacket it has nice big sturdy zippers on it

The Teknic Violator jacket I've got (I think it's a 2007, previous to the current generation) has a metal-tooth zipper that has held up pretty well; the zippers on my Teknic Chicane pants are metal as well, so it's probably something they do fairly widely across the line. I do worry a bit about remembering to tuck away the zipper pulls (especially on the pants fly and the front slash pockets on the jacket & pants) for fear of scratching the tank.
Unfortunately, the jacket as a whole is starting to show some loose seams in non-critical places after just a year or so of moderate use, though the pants are holding up well. It's also leather, which I know you're trying to avoid.
FWIW, the zipper on my Dainese Gladiator jacket failed within a year or so, and it was replaced FOC. The repair was handled through Cycle Gear.
