All the same corner! No wonder there's a crowd.

I bet that turn is off-camber there...looks like a lot of them are spinning up the back wheel...all of a sudden like.
A couple of them didn't really react to the rear wheel spin.. Surely they felt it.. Looked like they had time to react to it.. Traction control would have saved most of those.

Dunno...it takes a fine hand to react to a rear wheel
spin. React too much and you'll be over the high side...and probably over that guard rail. TC might have helped, but who knows...it often works within a narrow range. And if the pavement there is truly screwed up, it might not matter. And if you're riding on the street hard enough to need traction control, you've got bigger problems ;D
They all crashed in the exact same spot. The exact same. A problem with the road there?!
That said, I won't cry on these guys: no leather, no boots (the guy with the R6 rode with sneakers????)... No wonder why insurance cost are so high! [bang]

Actually some of them crashed at the guardrail portion of the turn while others crashed later on into the hillside. Maybe that suggests that there's two apexes in that turn--perhaps that's why they're crashing more at the 2nd part? They think they've made it through and perhaps the turn tightens a little more than expected. One guy left a real distinct darkie. I'm not sure what causes that--just too much speed? Hitting the brakes and too much speed?
Clearly it's a known spot, since there appear to be a horde of videographers standing on the hill waiting for someone to wad their bike. So, like that janky turn on Tam, you think they'd just slow the make the beast with two backs down at that section.
That looks like a section near the Rock Store. I rode it on my monster when I was visiting, and there didn't appear to be any really horrible corners that I could see. But then I wasn't trying to drag a knee. [roll]
Maybe some of the SoCal folks can weigh in on what's going on here.
Edit: I think this is the spot: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=rock+store&sll=34.100345,-118.803213&sspn=0.002523,0.005681&ie=UTF8&radius=0.16&rq=1&ev=zi&hq=rock+store&hnear=&ll=34.1009,-118.803942&spn=0,359.994319&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=34.100805,-118.803636&panoid=dDe5HNhtCDUeJAVW-d8Khw&cbp=12,315.82,,0,12.14 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=rock+store&sll=34.100345,-118.803213&sspn=0.002523,0.005681&ie=UTF8&radius=0.16&rq=1&ev=zi&hq=rock+store&hnear=&ll=34.1009,-118.803942&spn=0,359.994319&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=34.100805,-118.803636&panoid=dDe5HNhtCDUeJAVW-d8Khw&cbp=12,315.82,,0,12.14)

Yes, well, it's probably safe to say that there was a fair amount of knuckle-dragging going on there well before any bikes hit the dirt.
Well, I posed the question in the SoCal board, so we'll see what the local intel has to say.
I love the one link with the adverts for Colitis Symptoms and Accident Attorneys. Maybe they're sponsors for these guys?

So did you phrase it like this?
"Yo d00dz. Y u be eatin' shizzle all da time in dat corna, broz. Dont u no it be uber uncoolish to be waddin' yo sweet ride like dat? Whattup?"

Jeez, Nick doesn't talk like that at all.
Now if I was posting in the Gixxer forum... ;)
MM did correctly identify that corner.
I think the huge supply of YouTube vids of that particular corner is due to there being a couple good spots to shoot from and it's proximity to the Rock Store.
I've not gone through that corner at the speeds those guys were attempting.
I don't recall that the surface was bad, pretty much like the rest of Mulholland.
The first 2/3 of that corner is pretty steep uphill, but it flattens off toward the exit.
Also, the camber/banking flattens off too.
I'm pretty sure that's what's getting 'em.

Well yeah.. They were all dragging knees (or trying).. They got their comeupins..

No...
But it is made out of rocks.

I think it's a participle... or some crap.
Dan - think Zeitgeist, then make it about 2x shabbier, about 10x worse smelling, and take away the beer and weed, and you have the Rock Store. Honestly, other than being on a nice twisty road it has about zero going for it. Just a bend in the road really, to see and be seen.
Interesting that coming from the other direction, there is a 15 mph curve warning sign, but no sign from the direction in which all these crashes took place.

I guess they figured the right hander is tighter, so they put up the sign there.

There is a pretty long pretty steep downhill straight(ish) stretch leading into that corner.
I'm surprised no vids were of crashing that way, as it seems much more likely... and I've seen it happen.

and I was diggin' the 2 new 5th gen Camaro's. Too bad they weren't in the coolest color... mine is! [evil]
Those vids get my inner gear-nazi all ready for a rant. Why knee drag when you're wearing jeans? And the short sleeves and the various riders in sneakers made me wince.
<stating the obvious> It's pretty clear that the guys who crashed in those vids shouldn't trying to get through that turn as quickly as they were. I saw lots of folks with a knee out and their butt off the seat, but with their head at centerline or even on the other side. You can hang you knee out all you want, but if your upper body is pushing the bike underneath you, you're screwed. The ZX-6 rider was the only one of those vids where he looked like he knew what he was doing. And he didn't go splat.
Interesting about the camber. That would explain a lot. I couldn't tell if that's a portion of the turn where they'd be getting on the gas or not. If they cracked the throttle a bit, I *think* there's a chance that some of them might have gotten through that one (I'm playing the physics out in my head because though cracking the throttle is counter-intuitive, but it would weight the rear more, which I *think* would help get more bite and prevent it from spinning up --right/wrong?). Edit: now that's starting to sound wrong. Hmm.
Well, I think you're right about the throttle, but only enough to maintain the rearward weight bias, not so much as to break it loose. Thinking about it a little more, it's an uphill turn so keeping the weight on the rear isn't going to be an issue. I think they were just giving it too much gas coming out of the turn. Maybe hoping to do a wheelie or sumpin'.
You know how some people are about wheelies. ;)

From the write up it sounds more like Alice's.
The Geist is a different sort of place completely.
I never even heard of the rock store before. That's in SOCAL isn't it? What country is SOCAL in again?

Alice's is like the 4 Seasons compared to the Rock Store.
Well, they re-did a bunch of the plumbing at the Rock Store, so the stench is gone.
My nose isn't all that discriminating, so YMMV.
Glad to hear it Nick - when I was there a few years ago it made your eyes water.
