So I bought Julie a 620 dark and I need to shave the seat... anybody know of anyone with an old seat I can buy and destroy in my efforts? ;D I want to keep the stock one in tact if I go the DIY route... as the other methods are $400 plus to have them custom shorten the seat.
Check out Mr. Ed's in Albany. I heard he can do this kind of job for as little as $100 . . .
No FHE though.
I emailed him. Rich's in Seattle responded... but they are like $450... and from the sounds of it... Ed's may have gone way up in price. The quotes they had online were really high too.
Bummer. Yah, Rich's is pricey but I'd heard Mr. Ed was cheap.
Oh well.
I tried.
Ed's is now more expensive than Rich's.
On a side note... and a weird one... Geico insurance... Ninja 250 (2001) = Monster 620 exactly in the insurance cost... wtf?

dont question these things
just go with it
I've got the stock lower seat from my '03 800 Dark in perfect shape. I bought a used regular seat because the low one sucks when you're 6' tall. You're welcome to try it out if it fits the bike. If you like it, keep it and gimme your seat. I'm only keeping it for the pan, I want to hack it apart and build a better two up seat.
Scott
Thanks Scott... I think I may need to shave it down anyhow.... but once I get the lowering link in... we will see.
The stock low seat is lower AND slopes towards the tank. Great if you're short with short arms, terrible nut crusher if you're not. Please come get it and give it a try. I'm guessing you're dropping the forks a bit too to match the lowered link? You're welcome to hold onto the seat until you get all the suspension bits installed and see how it plays. With those three together you may be just fine.
You may also want to look at the Gen-Mar risers that bring the bars back an inch. Ugly, but functional for the short armed.
Scott
She already has the lowered seat on her. It's the same seat I have.
Dude. I'll sell you Lili or $6K and you can part her for "Julie's" bike. [cheeky]
Julie's about my height right? Is she looking to flat foot or just have a little bit more secure of a stance?
I used to have a 695 with the Ducati lowered seat. It helped alot and I was able to get the balls of my feet down on both sides but I definitely couldn't flat foot. I dunno if the bike could have been lowered enough to do that.
I should know tonight about whether the S2R seat will fit the 620. Jacob's gotta go grab it off my bike in Estacada and bring it here.
Yeah, the Dark came stock with the low seat unless it was swapped. You can tell which it is. The regular seat is fairly flat, the low seat is obviously sloped down toward the tank.
I've got both. And again, I only need a pan for what I'm doing so if you want to keep yours stock and hack mine up, just gimme one pan back when you're done.
Scott
I will probably buy an extra seat just to hack up... like you. I want to keep a safe one just in case... lol.
Need to update your tag-line Ryan. You're 2 bikes or 3 depending on how you count it behind.
Is that better Chuck? I didn't list missing the Ninja, as I don't. LOL
Better.
i called Dustin and he splained to me how to start it... now its much easier... [thumbsup]
Of course... if it were frigid out there... it probably would be worse... but it so nice... unfortunately I need to plate the thing first... already insured the monster... need to hit the DMV. [bang]
I have the stock seat off my '03 M800, you'd need to swap out the locking pin, I'm using mine in the Sargent seat I have on there now.
The last few times I've had to go the DMV have been alright, no long waits and things went fine.
It wasnt open on Saturday... and then the other one I went to was gone... not even there...

What do you all think... fame sliders, fork sliders, and swingarm sliders???
AND roll cage. [cheeky]

I'd say frame, fork, and bar end sliders, just to protect the tanks as best you can against the 0mph driveway tip overs common to new riders and short riders. Does she have some riding boots with a good heel? That helps too. Swingarm? Nah. Having laid mine down in the driveway I can tell you the cans will touch down and the swingarm never sees asphalt.
Scott
High mount cans... so not sure if they touch easy or not... as to bar end sliders... we have CRGs lane splitters... maybe I should put the mouse ears back on... [bang]

Ok, with high mount exhaust swingarm sliders are probably a good idea.
IIRC, there are/were some nylon type bar end sliders with a notch cut just for CRG lane splitters. If there aren't I'm pretty sure any machinist with a lathe could cut a groove for you in your own set. Heck, we could probably do it ourselves with a drill press, a sharp object, and a few beers on a Saturday. What could go wrong? [drink]
If you want to save the CRGs for now, you can do what I did and install the Third Eye bicycle bar end mirrors. Great little mirror and only $15 for a new one if you trash it. Don't look quite as cool as CRGs but you can get a par for about half the cost of a low end CRG.
Scott
just get used to the idea that the tank is going to get the dent
when she gets her legs underneath her
then get a new tank
I already pre-emptively took care of that. Bought a bike with a dent in the tank already.
Those aren't dents. They're concave turn radius enhancements. It's the #1 rider mod on Monsters!
Why do you think all the new Monsters have those concave vent thingies? Ducati saw what a great idea we all had and made it a feature!

Both sides?
Not both sides... but if what Chuck says is true... then I should just do the mod and make sure both sides are even. Maybe a 696 tank would fit... with them plastic thingys on it.
Bwaaaa haaaa haaaaaaa! It was a joke son.
But yah, Arun told me something along the lines that they put those vent thingies in because of all the dented tanks.

You better drop that thing on the other side and get it over with! That's my primary deterent if someone asks to ride it, "Ok but if you drop it, it WILL dent the tank and it costs $1000 to replace."
Yeah, I like the 696/1100 solution: ugly but non-ethanol bulging internal plastic tank, vents in the most popular dent area to help avoid that, and flexy outer skins that maybe take a hit better than steel without dimpling. At $1000 to replace and $400 or so to repair/repaint, old Monster tanks suck.

This reminds me of the marketing guy here at Insitu... heard we were sometimes breaking winglets when the aircraft hit the capture rope, so he made up some story about how it protects the wing... so now the breaking winglets are a "feature."
Hell, then they went and added frangible bolts to the base of the winglets so they break more cleanly.
Ahh... the humor in the evolution of design. ;-)

That's what I had done for mine. Took a guy on my route about 5 min to do both.
I just got the lowering link and the bar risers in the mail. I know what I am doing this weekend. ;D
chuck and I lowered her yesterday... crikeys... it's too low now... I rode to motocorsa... hit a pothole... and felt the scrape... ugh... looks like I will be raising it back up a bit... and then shaving the seat... oh well....
Thanks Chuck, for the help. We need beers.
Um, I think you're putting more load on the suspension than the wife will ;)
Also, if you make it really thin that soft stock foam doesn't really work. Check the super high density foam they use for kayak seats and supports. Seems way too firm but is actually very comfy. Portland Kayak Compnay carries it in various thicknesses.

I told him that at least twice yesterday ;)
Need to get Juls on it and see before making more adjustments AND need to get the rake right again too. THEN make your judgement about it being too low and/or needing to shave a seat.
And I thought I was the impatient one ;D
Ummmmm . . . . drinks. Yah, drinks. I need drinks.
How's that 620 coming along?
Just finished the factory tour of SpeedyMoto... those guys are a hoot... picked up some sliders for Julie.... haven't really touched the 620.. prolly call Deric and have him do some minor tweaks.
Factory tour? How'd you get a factory tour? I want a factory tour. Why doesn't anybody love me :'(

When you pull the DB killers out... that is the core... I thought she sounded pretty good... growling like that. :-\
I was trying to put it inuendo . . . bombed . . .
I just don't have the talent you do.
ME: "So I didn't blow any seals or anything?"
RYAN: "Dude. It's just ice cream."
See . . . the difference? [evil]
Just reading that makes me chuckle... I am so 12 years old. [thumbsup]
I still chuckle every time i think about telling Ava "I have to hang up now Ryan needs me to hold a nut." [laugh]
Did you ever get a seat Ryan?
I didn't read the whole thread.
My seat fell through... so no... I am still planning on shaving it down though... wanted a spare before hand so I had a back up in case I farkled it all... Costs $400 to have it custom done... but $100 for a seat... $50 for a gel pad.... then some other what nots... is it worth just having it customized or doing it yourself? Still want a spare to goof off with.
Hey, still have my low seat you can try. If it works as is, keep it and trade me yours. If not, hack into it and keep yours pristine. I only need a pan at the end, don't care about the seat.
Scott
From what I can tell. I already have the low seat, the Ducati OEM version of stock.
If it has that forward slant and a dip at the front, then yup.
Wll, if you want to hack mine up and see how it comes out and give me either one back when you're done, you're welcome to it.
Scott
Will keep that in mind. Just need to get the time and balls to hack up a seat...
Easy enough to do. I'd say get some high density foam for kayak seats rather than gel, it works great in thin applications. It's cheap and easy to try again if you mess up. I think gel seats are totally overrated.
Scott
Shoot me a PM Ryan! [thumbsup]
where you at these days IZ?

Never thought I'd end up back here since we left in '06 but enjoying it especially since we're in a different part of the city.
Phoenix? Was hoping you were in the Valley of the Rain. ;D

Funny you should say that.
It seems like Seattle here in the past month or so. I think we've had more rain here this year than we have in the past 6-7 years!!

NAIL! I HATE Nails!
hehe
I shave the seat and put in some gel... the bike is now all lowered... the seat aint perfect... but I have a pretty backup seat ready just in case.... I have a nice electric stapler... and was trying to put them staples in... and they didn't go in very well... oh well... I duct taped over it... will keep it that way for awhile.
Don't bother with the final button up until she rides it a few times and you finish fine tuning.
