Title: my commute home from work !!!
Post by: dansamp on May 29, 2008, 06:53:13 PM
some a**hole in a P.O.S. Toyota tried to stuff me into a sidewalk today  [bang]
coming up to a light I was splitting between the traffic and some parked cars to my right
the light turned green and everybody began to move forward, no left turn lane so cars started to back up
I proceeded to the right side of the lane then this A-hole moved over into my space I slowed but proceeded, he accelerated and kept coming
ON PURPOSE moving me over  :'(
I slowed down and let him get in front of me contemplating what to do
as we got to the next light traffic was stopped again and  I came up to his right side and stopped, looked him in the eye,
grabbed his side view mirror and showed him how easily I could have taken it off  [evil]
I smacked it and kept going  [moto]  all the while keeping my cool
but now that I am home I am pissed  >:(
what would you guys have done  ???
I hope I see him again ......
mean while I need to go have a  [drink]  or 2

sorry to be so long winded , just needed to vent

Dan.............

I think you handled it ok, anything more coulda landed you in law trouble even if he wass the one being a dick. As it is hopefully he'll give riders a little room.

I wouldn't split next to parked cars. Someone will not expect you to be there and will open their door.

I would've put as much distance between me and the idiot as I could. If I have to smack a mirror to prove a point, I make sure I'm moving *fast*. If you're going by slow, he could cut the wheel and move forward enough to screw you over.

when I split near parked  cars I always look for people inside
learned that the hard way ......

when I came up to him the second time he was stopped behind a car and had no where to go
that's why I stopped and looked him right in the eye when I grabbed his mirror
he just stared back with a stupid look on his face
there was nothing he could do
I just wanted to show him how vulnerable he really was, even if he was in a car

Get his plate and call in to the  [leo], I'm pretty sure if you wanted to file a complaint he would've gotten quite a ticket.

Pretty much not going to happen. Cops in CA write tickets for infractions they witness. Misdemeanor cites can be written for crimes not commited in their presence but the chances of getting that on a road rage incident is about nill. Best case is to just ride away and leave the anger behind.

I had a guy behind me yesterday, honking when I refused to pull out into oncoming traffic to complete a left turn. I turned around and looked at him and he started the "FU" screaming and various threats. I let it go and rode away even though I happened to be in the City I patrol, and one call would have had four patrol units going over him and his car with a fine tooth comb. It's just easier to ride off and leave fools like that in the dust.

It was also good karma a few minutes later. Stupid me decided to test out my new R6 on a straight stretch of road a few miles down and lets just say the R6 goes about three times faster then you need it to. The cop behind me waved me off when I noticed him and motioned that I would pull over just ahead. I have no idea why, other then he must not have got a good pace on me before I slowed down.

Same thing happend to me two days ago!  Old man in a beat up ford bronco decided the car in front of him was too slow.  He switched into my lane with out his signals, the good thing was, I anticipated his move and stayed to the far left side of the lane.  I couldn't speed up due to traffic so I hit the guys door with my leg while honking my horn.  I didn't want to do anything stupid since he looked like the type to conceal a weapon.  Oh well, at least I got a free kick out of it!   [moto]

I guess it deepnds on what you report.

I personally would report a hit and run, or having seen him get all mad after someone cut him off and and pull a gun out of his glove box.  that with a vehicle descrirtion, plate and location should at a minimum get him harrassed by the PoPo

Ever been "Doored" ??  It's not pleasant (ask me how I know), but it is considered a "right of passage" among bike couriers here in Boston...

-Sorry for the threadjack....Honestly though, I feel like people do stupid things like that (trying to cut you off) just to do it, or to scare you... The best thing to do is just stay the hell away, which is easier said than done a lot of times... :-\

Lying to the police will get you even more attention.

Just let it go, people. It's not worth it.

Hasn't happened to me, but I'm well aware of the dangers...that's why I'd only do it on my bicycle, and only going slow so I can watch carefully and stop quickly.  If I'm going fast on my bike and there are parked cars, then I "take the lane".

I've come uncomfortably close to getting a face-full of door on a few occasions. Car windows are tinted so stupidly dark these days, and people are so airheaded and/or distracted, it often feels more dangerous to be anywhere near parked cars than to just be out in traffic amongst the moving vehicles.

+1 to just letting it go, not worth your time, effort, or repercussion.  You do something to him and think that's it, what if he sees you again on a commute and decides to retaliate?

If you really feel the need to retaliate, go for the passive way.  Pretend to break down in front of him and block him with your bike while your "checking" it for the problem.  Then when he finally is able to back up and get around you start the bike and drive off.   [cheeky]

Use washers and bolts, then you can say they fell off your bike  ;)

I got a door opened on me in Santa Monica, CA last year.  Not fun.  I was splitting *between* the only tow lanes traveling in my direction on a city street.  I never split next top parked cars, your on borrowed time if you do.  Anyways, as I'm crawling along (doing about 5mph) a passenger decides to get out of a car in the middle of the street!  I slammed on the brakes and made contact with the door but was able to keep the bike upright (barley, it was leaned over pretty far :o ).  I gave the dude a big earful and went on my way.  There wasn't even that much traffic, they could've easily pulled over to the side of the road  [roll]

Buddy of mine got pissed at some lady the other day for <insert stupid cage move here>.  Anyway he went to kick her door while moving and instead kicked her tire.  His foot swung back so fast it snapped his ankle inside his boot and he ended up lucky with a minor hairline fracture.  I've started to second guess my initial reaction on the road now.  Like it or not, or, right of way or not, we are the smaller physical mass and need keep that in mind.

Also don't bring a knife to a gun fight seems to fit here.  Keep cool, drink a cold one and laugh it off.

ive banged a couple mirrors. ussually when the driver sees me and then purposely move over to try and block me from lane splitting.  ive even had a guy hit the car in front of him  because he was trying to cut me off, and didnt notice he was close to the car in front of him, i stuck around til the police showed up to be a witness to make sure that the person he hit, and the police knew the reason for the accident.

I don't mean to be preachy, but being aggressive while on a motorcycle - even if you're in the right, doesn't sound like a very good idea. When I'm on a bike, half the time I ride like I have something to prove - because I do. I want to prove that motorcyclists are polite, responsible, and cautious while on a bike.

Record the license plate, file a complaint, call the authorities - whatever, but motorcyclists don't need any more bad publicity.

Besides, if you're getting all riled up to the point where you even contemplate doing anything, you're probably too emotional to ride.

Just my $.02.

As long as you didn’t get hurt, just pass him and get over with.
I know it’s easy to say than do and if you ask me 10 years ago I would probably tell you to throw a brick to him. But really, there are too many idiots on the road, don’t bring yourself to their level. There will be another maniac to take care of him soon or later.  :)

Please remember one thing - when it's car/truck vs motorcycle, the motorcycle ALWAYS loses.  Don't be a loser, they aren't worth it.  Dead right is still dead, and when you're dead you can't post about the latest mod you dreamed up.

Lugnuts do sometimes fall off other vehicles and can get tossed up by car tires, right onto windshields.  What a shame that would be.
