Title: Best Route from San Fran > San Diego?
Post by: DrDesmo on February 10, 2010, 05:02:55 AM
Good morning from the great frozen north  ;D

My GF and I are going to meet up with some family in San Fran and then borrow my stepdad's K bike and head down to SD for a few days.

Any route suggestions?

Cheers,
Adam

I'm planning on riding down in March myself.

If you've never done it, take Hwy 1 from Carmel Valley to Cambria. Possibly one of the best rides on earth. It's definitely better if done during the non-summer months, on a weekday though. Else you'll be spending a lot of time passing on the double yellow, or waiting behind cars if you're not into that sort of thing. Be sure to gas up in Carmel Valley - it's 100 miles till the next fillup.

Another nice road, if the coast is foggy, is the Jolon/Ft. Hunter Ligget bypass on Hwy 101. Not nearly as twisty as Hwy 1, but in the spring it is filled with wildflowers.

Hwy 33 through Ojai is terrific also, and this time of year it won't be too hot to ride.

Lemme see if I can dig up some other ideas for you.

Awesome  [thumbsup]

We'll be flying in March 13 or 14 if anyone wants to grab a coffee ... Or Jamba Juice!  ;D  And will be in SF for a day or two (hotel TBD) and then heading south.

It looks like - technically - I could take RT 1 the whole way down ... Hmm!

Cheers,
Adam

And yea, gas up in Carmel at the cool looking retro pump

Yeah, but down past Santa Barbara Hwy 1/PCH merges with 101 and doesn't really get interesting again until Camarillo.  You might consider instead riding Hwy 166->33 through Ojai, or take 154 past Lake Cachuma into Santa Barbara, and stop for tacos at the Super Rica taqueria (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?client=safari&rls=en&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=super+rica+santa+barbara&fb=1&gl=us&hq=super+rica&hnear=santa+barbara&cid=4350562262764240028).

For the LA->SD leg, you might want to check with the SoCal folks - I haven't ridden that section beyond slabbing it on my way to Mexico, many years ago.

Here are some Google maps of routes I've taken. Feel free to mix 'n match.

Hwy 1 to 166.  Past 33 to Cerro Noroeste/St. Hwy 95., right at Lockwood Vly., left on hwy 33 to Ojai.  Out to 101 south.  Once you hit Santa Monica it pretty much sucks so stay in Ojai that night.  Reverse/repeat.  G14 is nice, so is 41/46 to 25 north.
Good times!
