Title: Knee Armor
Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 19, 2010, 08:19:15 AM
Ok, so I know I'm going to get flack for this, trust me I don't want to be labeled squid, I don't wear tennis shoes on my bike...

I want to protect my knees, I'm a skier first, motorcyclist / ducatista second. BUT, don't really feel like buying pants. I'm a casual rider, and like wearing jeans around town. I see some companies like Icon, dainese, etc make knee guards and they aren't that expensive either. I figure they fit under jeans.

so, what are your thoughts on them? I figure better than no protection at all right? Thanks guys.

No first hand experience yet but I am thinking about the Forcefield Limb Tubes for my knees.  Looks like a good alternative to built in armor - at least in theory.

I've got a set of the T-Pro/Forcefield limb tubes for knees. I've got a couple pair of kevlar jeans, neither have built in armor, so I use the limb tubes to give me some impact protection while in the jeans.

The limb tubes use the same armor that they offer as inserts for pants - so I'd expect them to do a good job. The limb tubes hold the armor snugly and I'd expect taht they would stay in place pretty well if I crashed - which is a critical thing.  I don't expect that they would protect as well as my leathers - but a hell of a lot more than nothing.

There's a few companies around that make jeans with kevlar in spots. I've got a set from Shift and Icon. Aside from some additional stitching, the shift ones look like every day jeans. The icon ones are are thicker, have knee panels, and extra long back pockets (keeps you from having to sit on your wallet) - they won't pass as well for normal jeans as the Shift ones do... but the don't look like power ranger pants.

WebBikeWorld has some reviews on similar products for both Kevlar jeans and knee armour.

I'm glad you see where I'm coming from. Thanks for the input! I'll definitely check them out.
And I'm glad to hear Raux wears them too, he seems to know his shit [beer]

I've heard nothing but good about t-pro  [thumbsup]

my draggin jeans came with knox armor that velcro'd in, but it was tricky to get it set just right so it would feel ok off the bike. it had pockets for the hip armor, though

BMW City pants if you can find a pair.  Awesome built in CE standard protection Knee and hip pads. Pant looks like a military cargo pant.

I have the Icon but I use another Velcro strap that goes around the entire pad. I got them from a hockey store. The pads feel way more secure now and you don't notice them at all. I also wear Kevlar reinforced jeans.
