Title: I need a spare key
Post by: daftduc on March 25, 2010, 05:01:51 PM
I only have 1 key for my bike and I thought it's about time I get a spare.  I've tried contacting Ducati customer service america about it but haven't heard back from them.  Anybody know how to go about getting a spare?

Do you have the sacred red key?

You can order a new key if you have the owner's card. It's the size of a credit card and has a number on it...did you get that?

Yes I have the owner's card.  Do I just call a local place like MotoPrimo or Delano to get one?

I just did this.  Call Delano, as  they need to order the key.  They mailed it to me in about two weeks.  The key cost about $45.  Go to your local keysmith to cut.  Try it out on your seat lock.  DO NOT TRY IT IN YOUR IGNITION!  There is a specific series of codes that need to be plugged in when you put the key in the ignition for the first time.  This allows the bike to accept the security chip in the key.
So, the best thing to do is head out to Delano with your new key and let them program your key.  They told me that they would do this for free.  I am headed out next week to do just this.

You do not need the red key at any step in this proccess.

Hope this helps.

Yeah that helps.  So you need the motorcycle present to program the key?

I just talked to Delano and they told me I absolutely must have the red key to make any spare key work.  The code card doesn't do anything as far as programming new keys.  There is a company that makes replacement red keys and Delano is checking to see if they can do that for my model and year.

So maybe my best solution is just to never lose my 1 key.
