Title: The Saga Continues...
Post by: Ideapimp on June 02, 2008, 12:13:20 PM
Finally made the decision this past weekend. I decided to get the '06 Sport 1K that's currently living in Santa Fe. I came into work today all excited to let the guy know I'd be getting my money organized and we needed to figure out a date for pickup.

Then I checked my email.

He was taking it out for a spin yesterday to keep the battery up and a guy pulled a U-turn across 4 lanes of traffic, cutting him off in the process. Most importantly, he's totally fine.

As for the bike, at first glance it looks to have mostly cosmetic damage, but he won't be sure until it gets to the shop tomorrow morning. I see two sides to this.

One - If it's mostly cosmetic, I can get it for a song.
Two - If the frame's tweaked..well, time to look for another bike.

Sigh....

Shoot, I'm going to Santa Fe next week with the wifely unit. I could have "test ridden" it on the high road to Taos just to make sure it's OK while Jen stayed in town and shopped. Nothing is too much to help out a fellow Forum member!! [thumbsup] Really sorry for the dude's crash, glad he's OK. Also sorry you have to start looking again but at least you have made a decision about which bike to look for.  [moto]

Dumbass, ever hear of a battery tender? ???  Glad he is okay, but if you are going to sell something, never, NEVER take the chance of something going wrong.

I think he just wanted to take it out a time or two more. He really likes the bike, but I think he's thinning the stable.

The bike should be insured. Even if the "other guy" isn't at fault (which he should be) then the sellers insurance should pay for repairs.
If he's taking it to the Ducati dealership where he bought it, which he should, then they will write up a complete estimate.
You could stay in touch directly with the dealer.

I've pretty much given up on the bike in Santa Fe. I think it just wasn't meant to be. Was wondering if everyone could help me compose a list of sites to keep checking for one. So far, my regular list is:

Craigslist - Various cities
eBay - of course
AMS - Used and Pre-owned section

Anything else?

Ryan,

There is a 2006 Sports 1000 for sale in the "other bikes" section of this board that sounds pretty cool. Don't know where the seller is, his profile doesn't disclose his whereabouts. He says it's been worked on by a shop in Michigan but who knows where the owner actually lives. It would make Alan D very happy if you bought it since it's yellow!! [moto]

Nice. It's got lower than stock bars but if you like the Sports 1000 then the low bars won't bother you. Of course you haven't spent a full day on one to appreciate the hunched over, doing a handstand all day wrist/back pain. Then again, I believe you said you were 28-29?? If that's the case then it's against the law for you to complain about low bars! [laugh] In order to legally complain you have to get mail from AARP or break your back, neck or wrists or a combination of both. The bike did look cool. Nice Xbox exhaust. You might be able to find something closer to home so you can actually go check the bike out with your own eyes and ride it. The S2R Monsters are a very viable alternative to your SC1000 lust. Same motor and performance, more comfy but just as sporty and the biposta availablity. [moto]

Well, I think AMS still has that Silver/black S2R 1000 demo. Maybe I could run over for a quick ride. The only monster I rode was the 695.
Title: Re: The Saga Continues...

my M750 had clipons, and they were nothing i ever felt was "low".  my supersport has clipons as well, and they are considerably lower than the placement on the monster, and both bikes felt comfy to me, position-wise.  the supersport much more so actually.  riding the monster, i would always try to tuck way down so that my chest was on the tank...and it just didn't feel quite right.  now that i've ridden on the supersport i'm not sure how much i would want to go back to the monster to be honest, because i've come to like the position of the supersport so much.

everyone is different though...some people are comfortable being fully upright, and others are at home being leaned over the tank.
Title: Re: The Saga Continues...
Post by: Ideapimp on June 09, 2008, 07:54:30 AM
Well, that was my issue originally. I love the riding position on the Sport 1000 and felt the monster was a bit too upright with the pegs a little too far back. It made my legs feel really bent up since my torso was so upright.

Maybe these lower bars will solve that. If I have to lean forward the pegs won't feel so high. I just felt a little binded on the 695.

heh...I said "binded."

I'm with Fastwin on this one, you really won't know until you've put a few consecutive hours on the bike to see if it's comfy or not.  It's whether or not you're willing to adapt to it or mod the bike to fit you.  The initial feel is a great baseline to determining what you want.

If we were looking for super-comfy we'd probaby be in cages [laugh]

I went and looked this bike over pretty well.
http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/2001-DUCATI-Monster-900-92810669

One of the cleanest bikes i've seen. Tons of aftermarket parts and it sounds sweet. I could not however get sw superbikes to move much on the price at all. Sweet monster. The condition is excellent. If you are around take it for a spin. I believe it was maintained by AMS.

Question - are the 900 bikes dry clutch? So far I know the 800s aren't.

I seem to remember something about the M900s being somewhat unique, maybe not as much compatibility with other models, i.e. accessories not fitting, etc...
Does this sound right?

I think you are correct, DLS.

The 2001 M900 was the top end monster was getting the trickle down parts first, so I do believe it was the first FI Monster (maybe Immobilizer too).  I think it was the guinea pig before the M1000 and the motor upgrades (600->620, 750->800,900->1000) occured

Yes, but then I'd have a Monster without the dry clutch...booo.

Remember, I have a list of things I want

Sport 1000 (preferably black)
Dry Clutch
Biposto

I know i can only have two of the three without modifying an 06. So, I'm "settling" if I get a monster to get the other two things. But I'm starting to think it's not such a bad thing. Maybe I'll just have to scoop up the sport 1000 in a year or two.

IMHO, you'll regret "settling". I know I did. Every time. Life's short...
My .02- quit looking at Monsters. Wait for a nice '07. You are NOT (believe me) going to see any performance difference, & the wet clutch in town is SOOO much more better.

I hear 'ya. But the dry clutch is something I fell in love with the first time I saw/heard a Ducati. So, really, I'm settling no matter what I get at this point. The question just becomes, "how do I settle?"

I agree.  Unless you're aching to open up the cover and hear the Ducati music, you will probably be happier with a wet clutch.

Gee... how much conflicting information can you get to muddle your decision process!  [laugh]

My worthless advice for you is:  Shop SportClassic 1000.  Shop price.  Take your time... the deal will come along.  You must have patience grasshopper!

The guy wants a dry clutch.  Whether it is wise to get one for your first bike/Ducati because of the stiffer clutch pull or not is something he has to discover for himself.

Pimp, ride a dry clutch bike preferably an older bike and get into traffic.  It will be stiff to pull but can be remedied a bit.  It will never be as easy as the "new wet clutch".  Those are much lighter.

If I am correct, the 2001 900 is FI.  I think AlanD's bike is an '01.  He can comment on the bike's parts availability.  It's  a strong motor and has great fuel mileage to boot.  He gets 50+ MPG while my M1000cc gets 40 MPG on a good day.

Meh, we'll see. I've never minded stiff clutches in a car before. I'll get on that 900 tomorrow and see how it goes. If I hate it, I won't buy it. Simple as that. I'm not in the business of buying something to satisfy an urge. I may be impatient, but I want what I want, not a substitute.

I've got a dry clutch bike and a wet clutch bike.

There is no substiture for the rattle of an open clutch cover on a dry clutch Duc - I'm obviously not telling you something you don't already know.

That being said though, there have been times when I dearly wanted to just park the $%#ing thing on the side of the road and WALK the rest of the way because of traffic congestion, poorly timed lights, even traffic that wouldn't bother me in my car that has an insanely stiff clutch.  The clutch pull is bad, but it's clutch slippage once the clutch pack gets really hot that makes it suck.  (Now just as a side note:  the SBK will own any track day you care to attend (we'll completely ignore the ham-fisted rider at this point just for the sake of the argument  [roll]  ).

Trust me on this, I shit you not - I'd walk before I'd put my superbike in downtown Dallas (yes, clearly Patrick is more of a man than I  [laugh] ).

That's where the trusty wet clutch bike comes in.  It's the "Go To" bike if there ever was one.  Traffic is no breeze, mind you, but it is tolerable.  (Not having a water-cooled motor helps a lot with comfort as well...)

Any-friggin'-way, I'm just sayin'    ;D

Regarding the heavy dry clutch pull, there are several slave cylinder options that have a larger piston and reduce clutch pull by about 30%.

Never heard of the clutches slipping more when they heat up.  Is that common?  Some people remove 2 of the 6 clutch springs to reduce clutch pull and still no slipping.  I haven't tried that.

I've considered going to one of the aftermarket slaves.  Bumper to bumper traffic is a major painful pregnant dog.  But when it's over, it feels so good.  Then I forget about about it and gas it.
