I did the first stage of coring my exhausts about six months ago. I recently got around to finishing the job.
I'll write up a more detailed description in the tech forum but here are some photos of before and after.

It has opened up the sound but it is noticably smoother at lower revs. It used to chug along below 4000rpm but now it pull smoothly from as low as 2500rpm.

Thats a great effort, i cant wait to see the more detailed write up... whats tools did you use? also is this something that Average Joe can do?

I did mine on my 620 when I had it and still have them sitting here at work.
It's not that hard to do, the S2R/S4R bikes are different but I would say the same process.
You push the outer sleeve down to get to the innards, grind off the welds holding the end cap in place, knock that off and then grind the welds off the tube in the end cap and throw that away. Put the end cap back onto the exhaust, securing it with pop rivets/high temp silcone and push the outer sleeve back. I went and cut an additional 2 inches off the exhaust and cut the internal tubes back with a dremel. Never had the chance to put them back on the bike to see what it sounded like.

I actually have a desk job so I'm not particularly handy. I didn't have any real problems, it just took me a while.
I did use a dremel for the first stage to get the end cap off. The second stage was largely done with an angle grinder. I also needed to borrow a rivet gun to secure the end caps again. Other than that there were no special tools. I'll try to get the full write up done soon.

GREAT write up Techno - Really well done.
Nice work, techno. I read your write-up, and it's bang-on.
Essentially the stock cans are a "mechanical baffle" system. If you simply gut them and don't put the perforated tubing in with the exhaust packing, you'll end up with a very harsh and almost tinny (but very loud) sound.

As mentioned above - I doubt you would have been happy with the sound.
I did this same procedure on my 848 cans. It wasn't until I re-did them with the perforated tubing, some stainless steel wool, then the fibreglass muffler packing that I got it right. They now sound loud, but have that deep Ducati rumble. (I reckon my cored ones are a nicer sound than Termis, but that's just my opinion.)

As said above I don't think they are louder, just more bass.

Bass is good, they already laugh at me at work and ask whats comming, what the riders are wearing etc, can't remember which car the add was for - the one where the hikers stop and the guy listens to the ground - apparently that is what i can do, little do they know that mostly i know if it is a twin or a tripple (or Harley of course) but as for make model etc.. not so good. ;D

Im looking to core my exhausts but prefer to do it without pop rivetting through the shell.
The first cans i had were done that way just not sure how they did it. They're a lil banged up now :-[ so i went and bought new ones of ebay for $20. not a bad score :)
im thinking they slid the shell back, grinded through, removed some bit and welded right around. Seems like a lot of effort.
On another note when i tried to remove the shells off my old cans all six bolts snapped. what was the go there? Im a bit hesitant putting a spanner to my new cans now
