Title: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: svoloch on June 08, 2010, 05:45:36 PM
...  Starts Friday.  Saturday, I will be parking my ass at either the Londoner in Addison or at Trinity in Dallas/Mockingbird station.  I will be getting cigars.  First game is EARLY...  but the key game is 1:30 CT where we school our former overlords in the game they think they own.  For those paying attention, our World Cup record against England is 1-0 ( granting, for those with some knowledge of the situation that our last game was 1950, and that we failed to qualify for the 40 years after that, give or take, and are just now getting around to actually playing them again ).  No doubt, they will be itching to salve the humiliation dealt them in our last official world cup encounter...  I have at least one English friend who will be there and this will no doubt keep it interesting...

The bastards at Londoner have taken reservations, and if you show up there at 8am, you might get a spot on the patio :(

thinking Trinity Hall, which, for the USA vs. England match says on their site:

In Addition to Trinity Hall Dallas - which we expect to be full by 9 AM for the Argentina Match - local venues at Mockingbird Station that are gearing up to have guests in:

* Angelika Theaters - Opening a large theater - free admission - 1st come /1st Seated - Cash bars offered in the Theater
* Vapiano - Opening for all the matches including Saturday's with a great lounge and flat screen tv's throughout
* Margarita Ranch & Rockfish will both be open and have their TV's tuned to the matches

Worst case scenario may have to ride over to Victory Plaza, but I think I'll just show up early, as I really want to catch the Argentina vs. Nigeria game at 9am, and then hang out for our schooling of England.  Can't wait to see some of the best soccer players in the world and Peter Crouch!!!

Press:  "Peter, what would you have been if you had not been a football player?"
Peter:  "A virgin"

Nice! One to one tie against UK. Sorry Andy! [laugh] [beer] Dempsey's really good for an East Texas boy playing int'l. soccer but he was damn lucky on that shot. Kinda feel bad for the goalie, looks like a ball fumble/misplay that I would pull off. It's not good to look like me! [bang] Oh well, at least it wasn't a loss for either team. [thumbsup] Get up, brush off and move on.

Cheers! [drink]

Same here, nothing like American football--seems like the officials have some discretion to give extra time if the team they want to win needs some help...  :P

Sorry Andy.  Couldn't resist  [evil]

Brian, the US did not 'tie' with the UK they drew with England  [thumbsup]. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own teams but did not qualify.

A draw was the best result really, it gives you guys a chance to progress to the knockout stage. It would have been nice to win but no harm done.

Still feel sorry for that goalie. There is such a huge monkey on the back of every goalie, whether soccer or hockey. Talk about being under a magnifying glass!! Yeah, sure it's a team sport, but if you loose 1-0 everyone stares at the goalie thinking it's their fault. Again, glad for the "draw" and everyone moves on. [popcorn]

The keeper only gets grief when it is their fault. No one is blaming Howard for England's goal.

Green messed up and deserves all the abuse he is getting.
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: Cher on June 14, 2010, 08:23:09 AM

Green had a great one on one save later in the game and I get the distinct impression Green will get a few more chances to prove his mettle.

On a related soccer note: in a game I was watching yesterday, a player received a red card.  He had not been shown a yellow previously during the match; the ref just went straight to the red card.  What is the deal?
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: andym on June 14, 2010, 08:57:43 AM
Minor offences receive a yellow card and as you say 2 yellows make a red.

More serious offences, generally dangerous tackles will receive a straight red.  Cahill was unlucky, he tried to pull out of the tackle, he should have received a yellow not a red.
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: Cher on June 14, 2010, 09:58:45 AM

Will Cahill - or anyone who receives a straight red card - be out for the remainder of the matches or was it a one game suspension?
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: andym on June 14, 2010, 10:11:41 AM
2 match suspension which means he will probably not play again because Australia will be very lucky to progress.

Two more questions, please  ;D

"Set Pieces"?  I always thought there was just a single "set piece" and it was corner kicks.  What are the others?

And lastly, what is "Bottle"?  It was used by a... foreign  [laugh] announcer (McManaman) as a verb.
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: bryant8 on June 14, 2010, 05:49:49 PM
A set piece is basically a designed play from a free kick that has an opportunity to put a shot on goal.  The shot could come directly from a free kick or from a cross to a striker looking for a first-touch opportunity.  Corners and free-kicks on the offensive side of the ball can have set pieces.
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: andym on June 15, 2010, 05:57:09 AM
What Bryant said was right but all free kicks and corners are set pieces. If the ball is not in open play a set piece will bring it back into open play. Throw ins, goal kicks and penalty's are also 'technically' set pieces.

Bottle is like brave or courage.

You need a lot of bottle to ride a bike on the highway in Dallas.  [moto]
Title: Re: World Cup, pregnant doges... World Cup
Post by: fastwin on June 15, 2010, 06:28:08 AM
Makes sense. Doesn't bravery and courage often come in "bottled" form? For example "Hey, hold my beer and watch what I can do!" [drink] [bang] [laugh]

Newbie question alert  ;D

So you've got English Premier League, Serie A, Bundesleague - all country-based soccer leagues; do teams from the various leagues play each other on a regular basis any other tiime than World Cup or WC qualifying matches?
