Flying up to Portland for a couple days and looking for suggestions on places to eat and things to do and see. Staying downtown on the river if that helps. Thanks for any tips!
If you like books, you have to go to http://www.powells.com/ (http://www.powells.com/)
When are you going to be in Portland?
Flying in this evening.
You can head out our way and see Timberline Lodge and Mt Hood. There's the brew pub in Govy that makes their own beer too. They have overpriced but decent food.
Portland Saturday market, the Japanese Garden, the zoo, the rose garden, it really depends on what you want to do.
The service at McMenamin's places is typically awful but I like their food.
For drinks:
The Departure Lounge:
http://www.departureportland.com/ (http://www.departureportland.com/)
..kind of an upscale for just drinks, but the view from the outside terrace is awesome. All of downtown is visible.
Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery
http://www.rockbottom.com/ (http://www.rockbottom.com/)
...more my style, good beer & grub, pool tables upstairs
For breakfast:
Sanborn's
http://www.sanbornsbreakfast.com/ (http://www.sanbornsbreakfast.com/)
Awesome German pancakes, good hangover cure
Hiking/Siteseeing:
Multnomah falls
http://www.multnomahfalls.org/ (http://www.multnomahfalls.org/)
~30 east of downtown, nice view of the Columbia Gorge on the way there. Scenic trails lead up to the top of the falls
The Grotto (The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother)
http://www.thegrotto.org/ (http://www.thegrotto.org/)
Not just a church. A 62 acre catholic shrine, with trails that lead up an enormous cliff to botanical garden and a Servite Monastery. And it's in the middle of the city, right next to the airport.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you're still in town on Friday, Motocorsa, the local Ducati dealer, is having a 796 unveiling part from 7-9. They always put on a good time.

+1 to the Shanghai Tunnel.
Been to Bijou and Stumptown since they're right across from the hotel. Walked past Voodoo a couple times, but doughnuts aren't my thing.
We're planning on walking a big loop around town tomorrow to see what else is out there.
Nice.
What do you mean "doughnuts aren't my thing"? How is that statement even possible?
Yeah, I know. Right now we're at Elephant Deli for happy hour and the drinks are epic.
Sounds like you guys are doing it right! Enjoy!
Hubers
I like that place
and the Ash street saloon...don't know why I like that place the service is shit and so is the beer
Go to Kell's, find Laura, and mention Jacob says Hi
should earn you a glare
:D
Laura wasn't working and Lauren had no idea who you are. :)
We ended up hitting a number of places in downtown and the surrounding area. Our hotel, Embassy Suites downtown, wasn't in the best area and our initial impression wasn't very favorable. Things improved substantially after we ventured farther. People were generally friendly and most food was good. (Morningstar Cafe has the third best breakfast burrito I've had.)
Thanks again for the info about what to see and do.
