Title: LYD gas tank problem HELP!!
Post by: LYD on June 05, 2008, 04:21:11 AM
I woke up and went into the garage to leave for work there was a puddle of gas under ther duc.  It was coming out of the overflow tube.  I just filled it up yesterday on the way home, so I thought no big deal I over filled it, then I moved the bike forward and it was still dripping from the tube.  I opened the tank to see how much gas had leaked out and it was about a half gal.  Then I put it into the wheel chock I still have from charles (thanks) and pulled the seat off and raised the tank to see if there was anything I could see wrong.  Nope nothing, all looked normal and dry.

When the tank was done I filled it from a gas can, but like I said yesterday I stopped for gas at the gas station, more pressure??  I am not sure, but if anyone has any ideas please let me know.  I am suppose to head to the warehome today, but not sure if I should until it stops leaking or head that way and see if randy sees anything, and if I do the later of the 2 I am afraid thad it will leak all over the rear tire and it is shot and could cause some problem..

IDEAS?? ???

Talk to Scott and Randy. This same sort of thing plagued Lisa's 620 Monster when she had it and continued under Scott's ownership. I don't think they could ever fill the tank more than 2/3s full before the overflow leak commenced. Randy dug into the tank and discovered a crimped/damaged (I think... a tube was buggerd for sure) inner tank tube that was connected to the overflow/vent and that was the culprit. Sounds just like your problem. I believe it was a fairly easy fix according to Randy. [thumbsup]

Thanks Brian, I will talk to Scott and Randy.  Just hope it stops so I can ride it over there today at 11:30ish.  The only thing that bothers me, when I filled it up the 1st time after putting it back together I used a gas can, and filled it all the way up.  And yesterday I went to the pump and filled it up again and now it starts coming out the overflow tube.  No problem for a week and BAM all of a sudden?

I see a visit to Randy in your very near future. Obviously could be someting else but it does sound very similar to Lisa/Scott/Lisa's 620 tank issue.

I am planning on going over there today to get the tires andetc. done.  But it must quit dripping from the hose.

that kinked overflow tube is a common culprit, check that the little vent underneath the gascap isn't blocked or clogged either (should be able to use a bit of compressed air)

Thanks David, I will shoot some air down it when i get home!

Is it still dripping?
usually it'll drain to a point then stop.
Is it pouring out, or a slow drip?

It has stopped.  It was dripping about 1-2 drips per second, I think when I put the rubber hoses back on I must have not gotten the clamps on good'n tight.  It seems that the level of gas has dropped below the overflow and vent tubes. (thus it stopping) I did shoot some compressed air down the tubes and there was some air in the tank itself instead of all coming out the tube at the bottom.  So thats what I think.  After I get back from the warehome I will take the lid off and check!  See you at 12:39!  [thumbsup]

Well today I took the tank back apart to see what in the hell happened.  So when I removed the lid and looked in, it was quite obvious what happened.  When I tightened one of the hose clamps it cut into the other one, ( the screw) so it was an easy fix, change the line and bam its fixed!!!  No more leaks!!!
