Title: Running, Running.... Dead....
Post by: Monstar_100 on July 20, 2010, 03:32:14 AM
Well after riding up the putty and back today, I was slowly going into the garage... Then bike turns off...

No power at all... Turn the key from the off position to on... There is nothing... No trick little sweep of the dials...

Pulled the seat off and the tank up and notice the battery was steaming!!! Did a quick fuse check nothing...

Will have a better look in the morning...

Any suggestions?

Also check the 30A fuse on the other side of the battery box, near the relays.

Sounds like your battery was shorted out.  Given that no fuses blew, it's most likely in the line down to the solenoid and starter motor, which is unfused.

If your battery was boiling, you should take it off the bike, as it can spill electrolyte on your bike or even catch fire.  You'll almost definitely need a new battery.

Possibly a regulator/rectifier problem, with the battery being overcharged or "cooked" - when you fit the new battery, I suggest check the charging rate at the same time.

+1, sounds like a regulator cooked your battery... would be looking for a new regulator before you hook the battery again if i was you

This was the first big ride with the new battery put in after the first battery I bought leaked all over the guts of my bike...

If I have to buy another that's the 3rd this fortnight  >:(

did you check the regulator before the new battery ?? sounds like the other one cooked as well....i'd get it checked out before just putting another new battery in, there is a problem either with the regulator or alternator...

The first new battery this fortnight was a motobatt battery and it leaked everywhere through a breather hole in the top of the battery before the bike was started so i went and got a yuasa battery and it was working a charm till yesterday...

no I have not checked the regulator or altinator yet...

Thank you for your help so far guys.

^^^ thanks for that buddy...

To add to that plan, I'm getting a new battery in the morning and trying that, if it starts properly putting the multi meter to see if the battery is getting over charged...

Here's hoping I don't need a new regulator as it will cost $198 or one from flee bay at $145 second or third hand...
