Even though I just bought a 696 recently and love it, it doesn't make sense in the line anymore IMHO. Ducati should have the 796 as the low end across the line & go up from there.

I think some insurance company subscribe to that "Over 750cc = double your premium" policy, so it makes sense to have an option.

They should make a model that has all the chassis goodies and with just a 100cc engine that we can swap out after purchase. [evil]
I'd really like a GT 750 in the lineup.
I would like to see a "Monster Classic" with a FULL trellis frame and a METAL fuel tank. Dry clutch too. [thumbsup]

Or sell it with whatever engine in a 'non-running condition' like they did with the Tomahawk. Yeah to get it to run it was something stupid like hooking the spark wires... but it met the loop hole.

European countries and others in the world have very different laws regarding motos and licenses for them than the US. Here someone can go buy a CBGsxRR100000 without even a license - other areas you are very strictly limited in the power/displacement of the bikes you can buy, or that are even able to be sold.
A buddy living in Sri Lanka had to get a grey market Norton as it was over the legal displacement limit.
they should have custom ducati that you can mix match online and order straight frm factory like the R6. if i had all the money in the world....
Ducati 848 EVO with Ohlins front and rear with linear rates for 150lb rider straight from the factory, traction control enabled ecu and multi map feature, DP levers and rearsets + termi pipes.
i like dreaming sometimes!
I mostly removed the models that are not needed.

I say they need a Monster 350 w/ABS priced under $6,000. It would be the bike EVERY new rider would buy.

several years ago they published a corporate direction statement that they would have a single entry-level bike
i think you have something with that idea, but 350 is FAR too small for a 2-cyl. and given that they currently sell the 400cc (in some markets) with just a sleeved/stroked-down engine, it's far too heavy imho.
part of the problem of being a small company is that they need to keep their parts catalogue small and reuse as much as possible across product lines. a proper-sized engine with 350cc output would need to be much smaller and necessitate a whole new catalogue.
now, if they are going to do that, the proper route (imho) is to create a lightweight single with sizes from 350 to ~650cc.
ducati used to make scramblers and they could give KTM a run for their money by making a line of dirt-friendly bikes.
I'd like to add an updated ST to the lineup. It could be based on the current Multistrada frame and engine or it could be ST3 based. It should be drop dead sexy with a lot of the 848/1198 looks. It should not look anything like the new Multi.
Also, it is time for some updates to the Sport Classic range. At the very least they should use some lighter tubeless spoked rims that can accomodate 4-piston calibers. They should use the latest 796 and 1100 engines to expand the range. I'd like to see them revise the body work so it isn't so bulky looking. They need to fix the expanding tank issue once and for all. They need less rear wheel to rear fender clearance which looks wrong on a classic styled bike and is not necessary. Bring back some higher end SC's similar to the Paul Smarts and the 1000 which would have the higher end Ohlins suspension and better brakes.

I agree, but not on the direction. My perception of the SC range is that it should have a rotating lineup of bikes that are completely different.

and i doubt that is true anyhow -- the Ninja 250R is still priced under $4000
I want a Ducati with an air-cooled engine in a superbike frame. I would prefer that it would be styled like Rad Ducati's bikes. Alternatively it could be just like the Streetfighter, but with the DS1100 engine. Some might think this concept would have too much overlap with the Monster, but Monsters do not turn or handle like Superbikes unless they have been modified.

Having done the latest 'must-do' mod to my S2R800 (exhaust, brakes & suspension) a workmate suggested Ducati should run their business like Dell whereby you just choose the parts you need for ... well ... your needs. They build it as necessary, the components are more or less the same just the specification is different.
Having been to the factory and having seen their little 'build trolleys' I couldn't really fault his logic. Its an interesting concept.

Brilliant idea ... would have to be a more sustainable model (although development costs could be astronomical).

I had a Ninja 250R, and it cost a bit over $5,000 after all the mystery charges and taxes. But that bike is really targeted to a sport bike rider, and the riding position is far from comfortable after about 30 minutes. Plus the gearing is insane. You ride around in town going 40 mph and revving around 7,000 rpms.

Maybe, maybe not. The big take-away with this bike is that you would ruin all your trousers in short order after purchase. Stain the front as soon as you start it, then stain the back as soon as you crack open the throttle.

Here's the fault in that logic: Ever tried to order a motorcycle part from Italia? Remember how long that took? Now picture trying to order a whole motorcycle. Now picture that a couple of the parts are not as specified when you opened the crate and it has to be sent back. "Man I was hoping to have my bike by the summer of 2012 but it looks like it will be spring of 2013. Bummer."

they could do it lilke car dealers and have the options stateside... but it would be more expensive for them... maybe sell bare bikes and yo uhave to buy the options? i.e. exhaust, wheels, etc?

I'd assume the MTS1200 had a lot to do with a July increase. I don't believe there were any new models out around July of last year were there? The 1200 is still in limited supply so almost all that are coming in are already spoken for. I heard a major shipment is on the way though so dealers will have good MTS 1200 inventory shortly.
Yeah, I'm betting the new Multi put a pretty big bump in those numbers.
