Title: iphone 4 - A review of sorts
Post by: Got Duc on July 26, 2010, 11:25:13 AM
So I went ahead and ordered an iphone 4 last week.

The person on the other side said it should be here in 2-3 weeks.

Well it only took 4 days for the phone to arrive at the local apple store.

I went down to the store and was quickly ushered into a iphone pick up line. Their was one guy in charge of the line and was extremely helpful. He answered all questions without hesitation and told me what was needed in order to make the switch from my old network.

15 minutes later i was met by an Apple specialist and brought into the store where the phone was set up including all my contacts transferred out of my blackberry.

After a quick talk with the AT&T person my phone account was set up and i was on my way home.

Initial impression:

This phone is pretty cool.
I am so far impressed with AT&T regardless of what others have said not only on here but people that are real ( ;D )
I have more bars in my house that with the Sprint/Nextel phone.
I did test the "antenna gate" issue. It did drop a bar or two when I placed a finger over the gap but it did not do it all the time.
I have 3G everywhere I went so far and have not dropped a call yet.
A cool feature is the phone searches for a wifi connection in order to save on your data usage.
The battery has lasted more than i thought especially since i have been using it non stop since i got it for one thing or another.

Did not use the "face time" feature yet but heard it is pretty cool.

The bad - I had a problem with the SIM card but it was quickly fixed with an Apple tech

I have had the phone for less than 24 hours. So far so good.....

I'm glad you posted this.

I'm going to the AT&T store today to get one.  Maybe I'll have to order it?  I thought they were in stock. Do you think I am better off going through the Apple Store?

Better to call your local apple store.

You can reserve (if they are not in stock) right over the phone and get an e-mail whenit comes in.

Mine took 3 days to come in.

When you pick it up try and get there on the earlier side so there is less of a line.

ATT website says 7 to 10 business days when I ordered mine last Thursday.  We'll see but I keep watching for a brown truck.  :D

Apple stores get them quicker from what I've heard. I'm sticking with my 3GS until they work out all the issues. I usually let the Apple geeks get frustrated, have Apple fix the issues, then enjoy my issue free phone.

As a sidenote, my brother-in-law's wife works for Google so she gets a Droid phone. I tried it and it's not bad. It's definitely not as smooth as the iPhone and it has less apps available for it, but I can definitely see why people would go this route. I believe it's cheaper than the iPhone and you don't have to switch over to the great overlord (AT&T).

I don't have an I-Phone nor do I plan on getting one, but these impressions sparked curiosity to me:

I currently have two Blackberry Bolds, one is with AT&T (Bold 9700) and the other is Sprint (Bold whateverthenumberis). AT&T is my work phone.

Have you tested the battery life with the Wifi connection turned off?

When I first got my Bold, I couldn't figure out why it was draining the battery so damn fast and then I figured out the Wifi was on, so it was constantly searching for a signal thus running the battery dry faster than a hooker in amsterdam.

anyone know why the battery life is so good on the I-Phone with Wifi always on and why it sucks on my BB?

3G is a battery killer. I spend the whole day at home and my battery will last a few days while connected to wifi. I think it drains the battery when it roaming for a wifi connection. Pretty much all smart phones with wifi should experience the same issue.

If you're on a wifi network, shutting off 3g shouldn't really help battery life at all, should it?

that's what I was getting at.

When I lock on, my battery is good, but if you leave the WIFI on all the time.........my battery drains so fast.

I will be performing a battery life test today.

Todays test or the next day and a half or so I will only use the phone for checking e-mails, texts, phone calls and i will have to check on the stock market at least once  ;D

I will give you the battery life when done. (the phone tells you how long the phone was in standby and usage.)

Wifi on.

The real test should be to use your phone only with the wifi connected for a full day and then turn off the wifi and used it only in 3G.

Oh, to make it futher scientific. Make sure to charge your phone fully, then use it on only wifi, i.e. connect to your wifi network and don't leave the house with it, until the battery runs out. Mark the hours. Then recharge the phone fully and turn off the wifi. Mark the hours it takes for the battery to run out.

After having the captive battery die on my 20gb ipod, I vowed never to own a phone with a non replaceable battery.  F that!

I've replaced batteries in just about every version of the ipod except for the iphone/touch. It's an easy operation if you want to do it.

I get that its possible, just not convenient.

HTC evo 4 is the phone Im about to buy, will be getting extra battery and seperate charger.

My sis has the new iphone and loves it.  I have yo admit the iphone's dimensions are nicer than the newest droids.

Battery Test #1

With Wifi on so
Usage - 3 hours, 13 minutes
Standby 12 hours, 48 minutes

70% battery remaining

This was with phone calls, some web browsing, some texting and some e-mails.

The usage time applies to any time that the phone is being used for anything.

I did not play any music or games today with the phone. I have a ipod dock in my car so any music played would have been charging the battery at the same time.

I will leave the phone in the rest of the night to see where we are at the 24 hour mark.

Wow, that is impressive.

Can you do the same test with the wifi off for me?

You can decline if you want, I am just curious.

If you do this and incur some data cost, I'll paypal you some money.

Curiosity has struck me on this one.

I wonder what Apple has done that RIM hasn't with the WIFI feature.

I will do it next week for you. It is no problem really.

Please Paypal 11tyb $$$

I actually want to see this battery test (no wifi) for myself as well. It might be better to leave the wifi off except when i am going to download something. So far my data usage is only a few MB anyway.

Expect that 11tyb $$ when Warren Buffet and Bill Gates decide to will me their money instead of donate it to charity.

Odds are that will never happen  :-[

Battery shmattery.  Chuck this sucker in your pocket and you are covered! 5000mah.  Standard battery for the droids is 1500, not sure what the iphone's battery is rated at.  Compatible with both +.

yep, I posted earlier that 3G is a battery killer. When actually connected to wifi, your phone should good for the battery. When not connected, the phone is either 100% on 3G and sucking down battery or worse on 3G and trolling for wifi.

Amazing that the phone was better with wifi on.

I thought it would be the other way.

Although when updating something simple like the weather when the wifi mode is on it was a quick update but when in 3G only mode the update took a while longer. Not that is was that much longer but it would appear that the phone now had to "work" a little harder to get the info into it.

BIG difference between communicating with a router <20ft from you and a celphone tower >1mi away.

I've read reviews that with the additional processing, the 5 battery's additional capacity doesn't directly translate into an appreciably longer life.

I was happy w/my 3Gs (w/the 6.0 software) until it died...

Screen? Didn't see the attraction...

My comments were first hand experience. With my usage, my 5 battery last about 20 hours more then my 4. I used to be forced to charge the 4 every night. With the 5 I can charge every other day if I want.
