Hi all, i have a nastyish oil brown/gold colour on (what i think is) my sump. I have tried the usual cleaners, abrasives etc and it has not even flinched. Any ideas on how to get rid of my brown stain would be good :)
Thanks

I have similar discolouring around my exhaust flanges. It's because the bike was running too lean, and the motor got excessively hot. The paint on the motor then gets soft and gooey, and any road debris etc gets embedded.
In your case, I'd bet someone has dribbled oil on the crankcase, then gone for a ride and embedded the oil in the paint.
I removed a lot of it (along with the paint) with a toothbrush and acetone, while the motor was warm. I have plans to remove the heads and cylinders at some point to media blast and respray them, so they're lovely and silver again.
Thanks Suzy,
I havent tried acetone yet. Im guessing it will strip the paint to? If so ill most prob give it a miss
Hey Cake man after seeing your bike last week at colidascope
I was going to say it needs a good detail the tank needs a good polish etc.
The stains on the crank case soak them with wd 40 for a few days And use a nylon kitchen pot brush, don't be shy ;)
Reapeat this over time should improve.
Also this water based Kenco degreaser is good. make a concentrated mix for the tough stains.

On the horizontal cylinder i used oven cleaner, BUT BE VERY CARFULL NOT TO SPRAY IT ON ALLOY AND ANY OTHER PAINT WASH OF ANY OVER SPRAY IMEDIATLY.
The cylinders a painted with some very tough paint.
Oh and buy a decent camera ;D
yea, it had been in the rain. Went for a ride yesterdau and went through road works so crap was all over it. It got a good clean today.
Tried WD40 but nothing. stays on for a bit, slides right off. i need something harder. Tried all degreassers with no result.
Its the iphone camera :)
I was reading one of the threads in the US and the guy said he uses petrol straight up!
Try orange oil like De-Solv-It.
i've used kerosene and a brush to scrub engine cases..does an ok job..
that stain can also come about from petrol leaking onto it, i'd check the tank for a leak just to be on the safe side.

oh, WD40 and a nylon scrubber works a treat, use a green scourer for hard to get at nooks and crannies too.

Yea i have a feeling it was petrol, there was some sort of blockage and when the tank was filled up, the fuel was leaking from the overflow which may have hit the case. All sorted now, except for the cleaning... tried heavy duty degreasser today, left it on for a few hours, not much diff, did the same with wd40 last night.... same result! Brown stain is getting frustrating!
