Title: Long Gun People
Post by: Manny on May 06, 2008, 04:57:39 PM
since i don't see it yet, i'll start it up.

my mom called me last night and mentioned that the next time i decide to sell a gun, that i should give them a call. i guess they decided that it would be a good idea to have a little sumptin' around, just in case. they anticipate social unrest coming down the pipe or something.

so my mom gets a 1911 for mother's day!  :D it's nothing special, just an old auto-ordnance 1911-A1. i'll put night sights on it for 'em, and maybe a trigger job. it already has nice grips, skate board tape on the front strap, better recoil spring, extended safety, and 3 mags.

ok, 1911 lovers, post away!

I have an M77 in 30.06, no issues.  I wouldn't mind adding an M70 or 700 to the collection.

ruger is a tank... kinda like a FJ or a Jeep.   The Remington is like the chevy of long guns.  Lots of parts.

Dont know much about the winchester.

Savage has a great trigger.  Getting more popular by the day.  More parts coming.

QuoteI would steer towards Remington.

IIRC, they were the weapon of choice for snipers?  Don't see how anyone could go too far wrong with either of the three choices.  I never owned one, but always wanted one of those Ruger single shots (Model 1?) in .270.  Don't even know if they still make them.

My 700 7mm mag will definitely "reach out and touch someone."   Dunno how many rounds are through it (purchased used) but the bolt is tighter and smoother than some of the new 700's I've seen.

I have two 700s.  A 7x57 mountain rifle and a PSS in .308.  They both shoot pretty good with a very intuitive, straight forward safety.

My Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight is in .30-06.  Love the pre-64 action and the three position safety.  I like that you can lock the bolt closed.  Nice when you are walking through dense brush or pulling the rifle up into a tree stand.

I tried to like the Savage .17hmr.  Reviews are all good and its sposed to be a heck of an out-of-the-box shooter.  Fit and finish was an issue.

Looking at the Ruger 77/.17 All Weather a CZ or maybe even a Cooper.  Business is going to have to pick up some before I do that though...

Is it sacrilege to buy a 1911 in 9mm?

I have shot a couple 1911s in .45, and think I could have as much range fun, for less $$, chambered in 9.

i don't think so.  1911s have been chambered in several loads.  in Mexico, the most common load is .38 Super, which is an uprated 38 Special in a rebated rim cartridge.  Looks like a long 9mm.  In fact, they use the same projectiles as 9mm but the case is the same length as a 45.

I have several 1911 clones in 9mm.  One is a Llama (cheap gun from Spain) which has performed flawlessly.  I didn't like the finish (so I had it bead blasted, blued and polished), but the gun works great.

Colt sold the Colt Commander in 9mm as well as all the other 1911 models, starting around 1950.

The Remington 700 still seems to be the action of choice among snipers, and many long-range shooting hobbyists.  That said, I have always like Winchester and I own a Savage 111 (in .270 Win).

I think they are all good choices.  Savage is definitely attractive, due to its price point; the action and barrel are top-notch, it's the stock where they cut cost.  I am probably going to be re-stocking my Savage action in a McMillan stock, this year.

Hands down Remington 700.

I have 5 700's.  Best out of the box trigger out there, and always accurate out of the box.  I have them in .223, .243 and 30-06.  One of the .223's is a 40x LH out of the custom shop.  SWEET.

I also have a Winchester model 70 Featherweight.  It is a 3 shot wonder.  After he third round down range ya wonder where number 4 will hit.  I suspect it is due to the very light barrel and the 30-06 is a hot cartridge.  I think the barrel is moving around once it gets hot.

I have friends with the Savage.  They are not pretty but no griping about accuracy from anyone.  If the price was significantly less it would be on my short list.

The 70 Featherweight is a beautiful rifle.  I had a problem with the left side of the forend exerting pressure on the barrel.  Very tight.  I dropped the action, sanded it with a dowel until I could pass a dollar bill between the barrel and the action and my "fliers" cleaned up nicely.  That Shnabel forend has very little meat to it, was tricky to fix.

long or short action?  what caliber?

they are all good guns, but depending on your price/options/use/caliber i might steer you to something else.

someone mentioned CZ rifles, they are top notch, I would say even better than the three you listed depending on the model, although some magazine did a story on them showing the CZ's have the hardest steel in their receiver today (but only by a bit) and they are forged and machined from billet, the best way to do it.

The 700 is nice because there are tons of aftermarket stuff for it, the m70 as well but fewer.  Ruger makes good solid guns and I doubt you will be unhappy with it and they are cheaper.

What's your mission, soldier?

it was undefined for awhile

My .17 gave me the bug for shooting pennies at 100yrds

but then since all my buddies on the mountain are avid hunters, I figured I'd use the .17 when they went after squirrels

but

during those varmint trips they go after all sorts up to Coyote

and if I am going to be doing that then why not go on the Deer and Elk trips?

So after many a long discussion and the starting of several arguments I settled on the .270 while keeping an eye out for a .300

but

I am not going to go plink with either of those

nor am I in the market for multiple guns

So at this point I am settling with the .223 for a year or two before I get into something bigger

if you are going after anything as big as a deer/elk, you definitely need to play in the 6mm/7mm range.

.270 is a great load.

.243 allows you to use a short action, and is a magnum

30-06 is still one of the most popular loads for deer, and 30-30 is a close second, believe it or not.  but 06 is an awful big cartridge, almost 3.5 inches.

i would not use .223 for deer.  you can and many people do where it is legal (some states do not allow <.24" rifle  calibers for deer).  you'll be tempted to use milsurp in your hunting gun and i would advise against it.

personally, i would opt for a short action round like .308 or .240 W(eatherby) or 243 WSSM.  The last one is particularly interesting to me.. practically no recoil and excellent performance.

i believe the 700 comes in .243 as well.

save your plinking for cheap rounds -- buy a 22 rifle for that.  for critters up to deer, get a specialized round.  they will thank you for it.

Any experience or opinions (well-founded or merely entertaining) on the Beretta 92 series of pistols? My favorite local shop just got a 92FS in that appears to be in excellent shape and what seems like an attractive price (the owner hasn't put a tag on it yet, but says it'll be around $350).

I've only shot one once, twenty years ago or so, when I was a Capitol Hill aide & the Marines would take us down to Quantico to shoot the stuff they wanted our bosses to vote to fund. Good times.

the 92's are decent after Beretta got the kinks worked out.  there is no surprises with them, they are reasonably well designed and a solid 9mm platform.

they are not my favorite, i like some of Beretta's more "exotic" stuff (like the Cougar which has a rotating barrel instead of the Browning style lockup)

but they are good guns.

$350 is a decent price depending on condition

JBub-

I've never shot an HMR .17, but I do shoot a .270.  As with all guns, felt recoil is based on several factors.  However, the .270 is quite mild in comparison to, say, .30-06.  The beauty of guns chambers in .270Win is that it is a very flat shooting cartridge and can be used for a variety of game.  I use mine, with 150-grain bullets, for deer and elk with no problems; for Pronghorns in Eastern Oregon, you can drop down to 120-grain.  Or, say you want to surprise Mother with a guided Canadian moose hunt; he can sight in his rifle using 180-grain bullets and he's good to go.
