Yeah, have that pulled up right now.
Make sure your iPod is fully charged and then toggle the Hold switch on and off
To reset your iPod:
* 1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
* 2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip:
o If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
o If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep
Retry
Retry your iPod with a different USB port on your computer, not a USB port on your keyboard or hub.
Restart
Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.
Note:
* To update your Windows software, select Windows Update from the Tools menu of Internet Explorer.
* To update your Mac OS software, select Software Update from the Apple menu.
Reinstall
* To update and reinstall your iPod software, first download the latest version of iTunes.
* Next, open the new version of iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer.
* Select your iPod in the source list and click "Check for Update" under the Summary tab. iTunes will check to see if your iPod needs to be updated and perform the update for you.
* If this does not resolve the issue, try completely uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling the latest version of iTunes. For more information select from the following
Restore
* Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure to back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.
How to restore your iPod:
* 1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
* 2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
* 3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes. If the iPod's display doesn't show "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" you may need to put the iPod into disk mode to proceed.
* 4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
* 5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
o Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
o Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
o Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
o Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
Note: For Mac users, A message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator's name and password.
* 6. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
* 7. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
* 8. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.
And if none of that works, there are places that repair them.

i still have a 2nd generation iPod on my desk at work... it will not die.
I had one that stopped charging. Took it to the Apple store and they said, "sorry about that," and gave me a new one. It was something like $25 since I was upgrading.
it's iPod, not I-Pod. and seriously, wtf? It's not like you don't have my number.

WTF?! I haven't seen that Nano yet.
I have 2 other iPods..nano and 8 gig 2nd gen (I believe). I can use those. I need to get everything on one though. Tried using Sharepod software but haven't figured it out yet.
The new Nano is available in 8GB or 16GB (available in 7 colors). (http://images.apple.com/ipodnano/images/overview_featurette_features20100901.png)
When using iTunes to manage your music, connect each iPod to iTunes and upload content from each into a shared/common library.
Then use Playlists to select what content is available on each/any iPod.
IMO the new nano sucks. it's great as a music player but does nothing else of value. I returned mine after I discovered it has less features for the same price. go with a touch if you watch shows.
threadjack off......
you may be stuck in dfu mode, did you do a software upgrade? didn't read the instructions but try this:
1. First, Open up iTunes, plug in your iPod Touch/iPhone to the CPU's USB port. Turn on your CPU's speaker and make sure it is loud enough that you can hear it.
2. Hold down the Home button (top left for iPod Touch and top right for the iPhone with the screen facing you) and the Power button (located on the front bottom of your iPod Touch/iPhone) simutaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off. (past the red slider/slide to power off screen)
3. Now let go of the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button. Your iPod Touch/iPhone should have turned off and the screen should not be on.
4. After around ~10-20 seconds, you will hear a noise (beep/ding) from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device, now iTunes should recognize it in DFU mode.
5. After iTunes recognizes the iPod Touch/iPhone, let go of the Home button otherwise it will go into recovery mode and you will have to do the entire DFU process over again.
6. You will know when you have put your iPod Touch/iPhone correctly into DFU mode when the display is blank and that you do not have anything on your device.
And you are done, now you can install any iPod Touch/iPhone firmware on to your device via the iTunes SHIFT recovery method.

Clearly the loss of the built-in camera and video playback from the previous Nano is significant, but not necessarily a bad thing when Apple offers the iPod Touch with so much more for folks who want those features (as you recommended).
Based on the Nano that IZ is having trouble with, the latest Nano provides all of the playback functionality that IZ is accustom to with a smaller size, increased capacity and touch screen interface and more.
Yes, I drank the Kool-Aid.
well I have a mac, iphone and ipod and the problem, to me anyway, is that they are charging the same damn price for less................doesn't add up. cool little toy but utterly worthless when you can get a shuffle for a third of the cost; granted no cool little screen but so what.

the lack of display on the shuffle makes it a non-starter for me... i like to be able to see/select what i'm playing.
i have a shuffle that i use for working out, running, etc....
and riding. dont need a screen for any of those.
I don't have the patience to load and clear out a shuffle. I have a touch that I use for the same things. It can be cumbersome at the gym, but if I'm listening to Slayer and would rather hear Husker Du or Waxwing, I don't need to go home and change the files.
so, did the Ipod die or what?
he just forgot to charge it.. [cheeky]
;)
Well, I cant speak for IZ, but the above helped me with mine that I thought was dead.
Mine seemed to have the same problem as his, and no I tried charging it. Complete restore did the trick.
Moral of the story...look to the DMF for help before going elsewhere. Thanks all
