Title: Noob question about helmets...
Post by: jvax on September 21, 2010, 05:06:57 PM
Sorry for the noob question.

Are helmets waterproof?  I am guessing most helmets have some type of venting holes (if I'm not mistaken), so I'm wondering what happens when one rides in heavy rain...  Does the water eventually get in?  Is it inevitable?

When I ride in the rain, which is rarely, my head is the driest part.

I ride in the rain more often then I like, I'll get an occasional drip in the front vent by my chin, but nothing through the top.

Hell, I um, tore one of the vents off the top of my helmet on a tree branch, which left a hole. I put some masking tape on it and no rain finds it's way in.

Cold air does, though.

So uh, moral is you'll be fine.

I don't know what kind of Helmet you have ..........but let's consider it has vents on top and a Chin vent.

The vents can be opened or closed.

The vents on my Shoeies, Arais, Suomy, and Nolan have top vents that close tight.

The chin vent on the Arai seems like it would be water tight.

The Nolan also.

The Shoei and the Suomy could leak a little water from the design of their chin vent.

I don't know that for sure since I haven't ridden in the rain but the design looks like it could leak.

Thanks guys  [thumbsup]  Good to read all your responses :)  Just wanted to make sure my head would stay dry.
I don't have a helmet yet, I'm in the researching/learning phase of my purchase.  Thanks again   [beer]

I've been in 70 miles of driving rain in my Shoei - RF-1000 and my head was the only thing that was dry.  At least on the RF-1000, the vents seal up nice and tight and the face shield fits well against the gasket.

I have a joe rocket helmet. It listed at $300 new. It keeps my head dry. If I knew then what I know now, I'd get the HJC helmet that is the exact same thing with a different graphic and save some cash. I got mine on clearance at a good price, but still slightly more than the HJC branded one.
