Title: iPhone Slaves
Post by: BarneePhife on June 09, 2008, 12:27:10 PM
Assuming all you techno geeks / iPhone slaves have already heard the news?

Our phones are essentially worthless now.   ;)

Good news though... the hotness arrives on July 11th.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/steve-jobs-keynote-live-from-wwdc-2008/

299.99 for a 16GB white one
199.99 for a 8GB black one

Someone better tell the forum mods/owners to be prepared for a whole new level of 3G iPhone high-speed post-whoring from the DFWM crew!

are all of the iPhone zealots selling off their phones?  i'm wanting to go to the iPhone, but am not sure if i'll just look for a used 1.0 iPhone, or go with the $200 2.0 iPhone.

Rich, just get the new phone... EDGE network is the suck compared to the 3G network

yeah...i'm pretty sure that's what i'll be doing... for people to be selling the 1.0 iphone, they're going to have to price them pretty low to be attractive at all....   :-\

i'll have to mark the 11th on my calendar...wonder when they start taking orders?

Yeah, I figure my cruddy iPhone 1.0 with 8GB is worth about $100-$150 now.

On my advice, a co-worker of mine was wise and dumped hers about 2 weeks ago for $425!!
Why didn't I take my own advice! [bang]

If it's like last time, ATT will carry them.  But from what I recall, your odds at nabbing one at an ATT stores weren't any better.  However, 2 weeks after launch, I did find mine at an ATT store while the Apple stores still couldn't keep them in stock.

I'm thinking if they learned anything from the first go-around is to have a better stock available for launch week.  Probably wishful thinking, I know...

I can't remember for sure.  I bet it's on ATT Wireless website.

However, I know there were only 3 options at the time iPhone 1.0 was released, and they were like $59, $79, or $99.

But, I think all that has changed - at least that's what many of my friends have told me.  Now, AT&T apparently just adds on $20/mo to whatever plan you currently have.  The $20 is for "data".  For example, if you currently have an AT&T plan for $25/mo, you add $20 when you buy and iPhone and your monthly rate would be $45/mo - same minutes, features, plus unlimited data.

Swing by an  AT&T store and chat them up about it.  They might actually know more than the general public (but I wouldn't wager any money on that).  [laugh]

That $20 for "data" always confused me some people pay it some don't  ??? I think it has to do with whether or not your a current AT&T customer when you switch to the iPhone. When I was about to switch from Verizon a few months ago to get the iPhone they said the $59 for the plan was the only fee I would have to pay  ??? Then again I wouldn't be too dumbfounded if a cell phone company told me something that wasn't completly true  [roll]

I hate to say it (because I never have been an Apple fan-boy), but Apple has something good going on with MobileMe.  I've been waiting for MS to do this sort of integration for years.  With the OS integrated -mail, -contacts, -IE browser, their MSN.com, and use of Windows Mobile, MS should have already done this for non-corporate users.

One point goes to Apple!

Are they going to make the current iPhones upgradeable to the new SW? Looks like they've kinda implied it. That would be pretty sorry to make the old phones nearly obsolete. You obviously don't get the cool technical upgrades but software should be no problem. Looks like 2.0 is giving more of the flexibility you get from "hacking" the phone.

I'm glad you said it. I've had the .Mac service for 4 or 5 years (soon to be called MobileMe)(which, IMHO, is a really stupid name) & the service gets better every year.
All my info is transferred seamlessly between 2 desktops, a laptop, & natch, my iPhone. It also backs up critical info every day automatically to my online storage (20GB).
Plus, it's really easy to make online photo albums, etc.... I think Apple deserves more than just 1 point ;D

just got off the phone with at&t to make a change (downgrade) to my plan...and she reminded me to not go over on text messages, since they are $.20 each, and $.30 each for picture messages.  i then asked her about the (new) iphone plans, and she said that the $30/month for the data plan included NO text messages...none.  fyi 200 txt messages = $5/month, 400 = $10/month...and just goes up from there.

2G iphone is looking much, much more appealing to me.

I would have to agree. I live and spend most of my time in an EDGE network. With the 3G I would have to pay the premium and lose my tethering to my Tilt phone. Also would lose my bluetooth Stereo headset :(

I think I will be on the look out for a 2G as well.

Got the phones this morning

Sarah's is up and running perfectly. Mine refuses to switch over from my old phone to the new iPhone's SIM card. Something having to do with some discount I'm getting from my job. They had to remove it, setup the account all over again and swap phones. Only that didn't work. So now I'm stuck on the phone with the ATT rep who's trying to get an Apple rep on the phone because Apple won't let ATT do tech troubleshooting.

He's just as frustrated as I am at this point.

ARGH!!

Apple says "well, that's dumb, you're good with us. If it's not talking to the network that's AT&T. Why'd they send you to us?"

Good freakin' question.

So now I'm back on with AT&T who is trying to figure out why my old phone is clinging on for dear life to the network. It just won't LET GO!

Suck it! Two iPhones, both working. The tenacity of my old Sony Ericsson has been overcome by pure will power and an AT&T rep who knew what the hell she was doing.

Now to begin entering contacts. For some reason the Sony's won't sync up with the computer so I've got to do this manually. Fun times.

So...

Who has been assimilated?

Let's hear from those who have the new hardware (3G) in hand?

I upgraded my "iPhone Classic" to the 2.0 software.  I like most of the new features, but it's been pretty buggy for me so far.  A co-worker is seeing many of the same issues, so I don't think it's isolated just to me.  I do really like the new Exchange sync capability though!  I also like the ease of the App Store straight from the phone.

I'm afraid to set foot into an AT&T or Apple store and put my hands on the shiny new hardware and "blazing" (?) internet speed for fear of leaving $200 lighter.

Those with the new phone, what are your impressions of the new hardware capabilities (3G and GPS)?

Title: Re: iPhone Slaves
Post by: Ideapimp on July 15, 2008, 06:29:52 AM
It's fast...well, as cell phones go. It's DEFINITELY faster than the "edge" network.

As far as GPS goes it's really pretty good. Sometimes it has a bit of a problem pinpointing exactly where you are for a minute, but it tells you that it hasn't locked on by showing you the area you're in. Once it locks on it turns that area into a dot.

I've been using it get around Seattle. I dropped a marker where the hotel is, where the interview is and where Ducati Seattle is. [thumbsup] Then, I just follow the dots to where I'm going. Pretty cool.

The only hiccup that I hate is I can't send photos in a text. What is that? SMS? MMS? I dunno. I can select a photo and tell it to Email that photo, but I'm SOL when it comes to texts. And it may be just me, but I can't figure out how to setup a group to text to. Yes, I can have multiple recipients, but I have to select them all each time. Which sucks if I want to text the Lollie Bombs.

Yeah, texting photos has never been supported on iPhone.  Don't know about AT&T as a whole.  I know when I was on Sprint, they didn't support sending photos in text.

Also, the sending text to multiples wasn't even available in the first release of the iPhone.  It was added to one of the later 1.x releases of the iPhone software.  However, as far as I've read, creating distribution lists of multiple recipients isn't available, so you'll have to type in all the recipients each time.

I know... not perfect.  But hey, you can watch flying Russian dildos on YouTube with it.  Gotta make compromises somewhere, right?

pics in a text seems like such a basic thing to have though...  i can vouch for picture text messages on AT&T...my Sony W580i does them just fine.  though i'm wondering what if any text plan comes with your new iphone?  i talked to a rep a week back and she said that the $30 (or $45 for that matter) package did not include any text messages at all.  seriously?  are text messages that costly?  so i guess you have to tack on an extra $10 a month for a text message package?  that's kind of "WTF" to me....  is that how the old iphone plans/packages were set up as well?  i guess you could just "email" the text... 214xxxxxxx@cingularme.com (and similar addresses for other carriers) but it seems like that would be more work than should be necessary.

oh, and how are the alarm features on iphones?  can you set up (multiple) alarms to be recurring on specific days?
Title: Re: iPhone Slaves
Post by: bryant8 on July 15, 2008, 08:23:17 AM
The basic iPhone packages had a $20 iPhone fee for data and whatnot... it included unlimited data and 200 texts.

The 3G iPhone has 3 packages from what I can tell, from that you have your phone minutes and unlimited data/email.  You have to add a texting plan to avoid the "per use" charge of $.20 per text.  That starts out at $5 for 200 and then $15 for 1500 and finally $20 for unlimited.

The alarms are good, I have 3 set up for various parts of the week: workdays, weekends, and naps whenever I adjust it

but to answer your question really about why not just buy a new iphone....i think i can get by okay with fauxGPS...and that's really the only big draw for me for the iphone.  the slower net speeds wouldn't be a huge worry for me, as i've done okay without the internet in my pocket all these years, and i don't currently need push email stuff for work (i'm just not that important)... and the data plan should be decently cheaper.  so, as long as it has multiple customizable alarms like my current phone, i think i'd be just fine.
