I was coming out of Afton this afternoon and hit some bumps. My speedometer needle jumped
a few times and now when the bike is off it's pointed straight down. When the bike
is running, it registers, but it's not correct.
any and all help is greatly appreciated.

A similar thing happened to my old Civic. My friend fixed it by smacking the dashboard.
After that, it would periodically do the same thing, and quick smack would get it back in line.
Dealer quoted $400 to fix it, but on a $1k car it wasn't worth it...

A quick search looks like disassembly and superglue the needle to the shaft. Couldn't find instructions on disassembly of the speedometer though...

getting it looked at as soon as it warms up and I can take the bike to the shop.

Follow up (already!): This was a super easy job. On a scale of 0-10 with changing a tail light bulb being a zero, I would give it a one... one and a half tops. This was the entire process:
1. disconnect battery
2. remove two allen screws at base of gauge cluster to allow removal
3. unplug harness from the back. There is a tab at the very bottom of the plug you have to press for it to release. Remove cluster from bike.
4. remove phillps screw at bottom of the back of the cluster. this allows idiot light face plate to rotate up and off.
5. remove torx screw in the middle of gauge cluster
6. separate back from front of gauge cluster. The seals offer some resistance, but it is not glued.
7. release tabs on sides to remove front window face to get to the gauge faces (in my case the tabs were already broken off and rattling around in the back of the cluster)
8. pull needle straight off
9. put dab of adhesive on needle and reassemble as a reverse of above steps
A couple of things that I did to ensure accuracy:
1. before reassembly I plugged the cluster in and checked needle position. I was off about 1-2mph, but this allowed me to place with 100% accuracy.
2. on the needle there is a "skirt" that fits down into a "collar" in the cluster (I assume this is to trap light from coming out around the base of the needle). On mine it was folded over, which may have caused the problem. I trimmed the folded over piece of skirt to make sure it didn't catch (again?).
Really a piece of cake!
