A friend of mine suggested a group of us get together and build something for the
Deus biker build off.
Our search began well Andy looked and we the group waited until he found something that the group could feasibly work on.
Being that we have about ZERO experience at mechanically working on a bike a working example was high on the list.
The rules are simple, you can do whatever you want with your build as long it runs and will go 100 meters on the day of competition.
The aim of it though is not to buy something, give it to a bike builder with an open cheque and say give me your best work.
The main aim is budget. Our example cost a whooping $386
It came to us last weekend we wet it head on Thursday night where it started the night looking like this

And ended up like this

Doesn't really sound like the Deus philosophy, does it?
Matty, who is this innovative team of master custom bike builders ... and what is going on?
i call bullshit
i dont see any beer cans
thats at least a half a case job right there ;)
We were originally thinking it would have a broad tracker theme to it.
But as there is just 4 weeks to completion we decided not to go that way, as it would have required doing a hard tail rear end. Being that none of us weld or have a welder, the suspension is staying. It's going to stay as a mud bike, albeit it with a triumph tank a single seat and possibly some shorty silver guards.
We'll see what happens when the 2nd get together happens this week.
As to the bullshit call, we had a tripod locked off with an 85mm taking a few hundred pics which I will animate once the project is finished. And aside from the fact that I don't drink, there were a few beers consumed by the other blokes but really we were all just too excited/scared about what we are doing that clear heads were required.
Dare say this will be taking up your Thursday nights for a bit... so no Leichardt catch ups for you til it's done.
QuoteLadies and genitals, dust off your Whitworths and recalibrate your King Dongs in readiness. It's time to close your eyes and imagine a happy place, a place without boundaries where old American iron crossbreeds with 80s Japanese sport monsters. Where a rigid rear XR600 is a perfectly good idea and we really can't think why Honda didn't do it in the first place. This is a contest of creativity and resourcefulness: the victor will have spent the least and created the most original bike, from ingots of 18 carat enthusiasm. Open to all-comers, the bikes will be paraded and judged on the 27th of November at Deus in Camper- down by an esteemed crew of judges from the four corners of the motorcyclism universe. No rules other than it should be done as cheaply as possible, it must run (start and idle) and roll. No points will be awarded for excessive expense. Participants should be prepared to document their builds as a book is planned of all the entries from concept sketch to rolling masterpiece.

Looks like a great competition - good on you for getting involved.. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
I've been looking at doing a 2 week short course at Tafe, just trying to free up sometime.
Ps... That is a very WHITE workshop!

I you need anything welded give us a call [thumbsup]
Looks like Fun. I had an old Honda like that once :-[
Seen a few registered Deus Bikes getting around they look a real good rat bike for commuting etc. 8)
The real white workshop is my friends studio where I normally shoot, so the white will turn brown/black over the next month and then get painted white again.
We are all looking forward to what it turns out like, more than anything it will be a fun few weeks.
Thanks Rob, if welding is needed I'll let you know but we are planning on not hacking anything off now.
But then there might be a case for a tail chop depending on what seat we come up with.

Short course on welding?
Yea there is one at loftus/ st george tafe
THATS TOPS!
Matty what a great project.
Ya gotta chop that arse end, single seat, the pipe gotta swing down low then kick up at the muffler, put a monkey tank on it, make it l-o-w, get rid of everything that does not perform a function, I've got some bars that would fit that when inverted look like clip-ons, they are yours if you want them, er...is that the direction you guys are going in??
Mmick
Top choice of frame. A little too much rake out front though. I think Rob needs to be enlisted as I think what would look good would be to stretch the back bone a few inches bend the head stock to reduce the rake and Rob can do the rest! [thumbsup]
Get rid of the big front wheel and get a 17 inch one and I think the look would be what your looking for. [thumbsup]
looks like fun - good luck fellas! [thumbsup]
I'll grab those bars from ya Mmick, thanks.
I think we will end up chopping the ass, somewhere across the top of the rear springs.
Don't know if we have the time to do all of that to it Rob, we have decided to try to keep it somewhat ride-able after
the competition day which is the 27th November.
Go Matty ! [thumbsup]
Sounds like something I'm trying to have a crack at but in a slightly shorter timeframe.
Looking forward to the end result.
[popcorn]
Nice project!
Very keen to see the progress, and I like the idea of taking the photos from your fixed position - will make for excellent time-lapse footage.

No probs, er... when do you want them and where?
Mmick
Plans have too and froed for the past few days, the bars we have are now going to be used in an uncoventional way.
So thanks for the offer Mmick, if it changes again I'll pipe up as I have your number.
I'll give you all an updated pic shortly.
any progress ??

still waiting...........................

Sorry folks been out today pre Christmas and all.
The rebuild starts Monday so we have a week of pressure ahead hoping everything will go back together and it starts!
The colour scheme has been decided upon finally along with the theme.
Pictures have been taken as you would imagine having two photogs involved.
Everything will be reveled by the end of the week. The show is Saturday 27th at Deus if you have time pop in.

Yeah, like, something [popcorn]
Mmick
If I could give you something I would but seriously right now it's just a frame and parts!
The theme is Randy 720's which are vintage skater's shoes bit like Vans but older....
A two wheeled sneaker.
Now I'd love to see that.

tomorrow is the day
are you finished ??
YES.......
And it's far-riggen-brilliant.
After 4 weeks of grinding cleaning and piss farting about everything has come together in the last day and a half.
When the exhaust went on today we kicked it and it started first time.....
How stoked and amazed are we that with no mechanical experience at all it runs.
;D ;D ;D ;D
There have been a few more things done, heat wrapped pipe, grips wrapped in leather etc...
The full finish will be tonight.

That is sweet, you guys should be proud!
I hope now for your sanity you don't get a whole lot of input from people telling you what you could have done different. I rekon it looks awesome and I would ride it!
[thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]Matty
Thats looks great Matty.... the knobbys look wikid on it.... glad you went for something a little different. Well Done....
I notice the studio is no longer that brilliant white it once was :)
Judgement day...
35 bikes turned up to be judged, looking at them there were about 1/3 that never had a chance due to them being
totally outside the guidelines. By that I mean there was someone who bought along there SC1000 with Speedymoto bits bolted on, there were a fair few chooper/bobber types that were just worth far too much.
We got a highly commended which was awarded for the 910 image slide show animated of the bike from the moment it entered the studio to the moment it left. Once we get it uploaded I'll post it.
In the meantime this is Andy the project instigator on the B29 Bomber.
Thanks to J5, Jukie and Betty for dropping in and for the extra long travel to get down.

Nice work. Well done, and I look forward to seeing the slide show!
Andy has found time to put together an edit of the images taken while we were building/inventing our take on a beach tracker.

[thumbsup]
Nice one mate.
Would love a complete run down on what you guys did.
I wanna know where the bicycle handlebars, briefly seen at 1:49, ended up...
Nice looking bike, btw.
The handle bars most likely ended up on a bike of Andy's or they are in the corner of the studio/workshop collecting dust.
What did we do, well not a whole lot really.
Did heaps of cleaning with grinders and wire brushes on drills.
Dropped the forks through the triples, got some lower springs for the rear.
Did some more grinding and cleaning.
Cut the seat to narrow it, covered it in pretty cow hide with very little padding.
Did some grinding and cleaning.
Over thought what paint scheme we were going to use.
Searched like mad men for a smaller prettier tank to use.
Did some grinding and cleaning.
Clear coated the whole frame and swing arm.
Oommed and Urrred as to what to do with exhaust.
Did some grinding and cleaning.
Then in the last 3-4 days went mad putting it back together and hoping it would start.
Matty! top little project that one! [thumbsup] [moto]
Top job, and cool video as well. [thumbsup]
Planning the next one at the moment, well we have picked the bike we want to use.
Single or multi cyclinder Matty?
Mmick
Multi, think mass produced learner cruiser.
Yeah, think I know where you are going. The wheel size lends it self to that fat tyre look and the frame is already low.
Good luck with the project
Mmick
Thanks, we just missed out on one for about $1200
