I recently cut 2 squarish holes in the front of my stock airbox, one on either side of the original vent. I decided to do this because I could just feel that my bike wasn't getting enough air when I rolled on the throttle.
Before,
slightly choppy take offs occasionally out of 1st gear, smooth but not exactly thrilling acceleration, and very quite sound coming from intake (drowned out by the exhaust)
After,
Much smoother take offs out of first and I could really feel an increase in performance and coupled with the new growl from the intake, it created a much more exciting ride for me!
I have ridden with no air box top at all, and although the ride was much better that the stock lid, the noise from the intake was louder and not quite so pleasant. I think this was mostly due to the fact that I still have a stock air filter which unlike a K&n makes a flapping sound when wide open.
Sorry I don't a photo but it is a pretty simple mod and I'm sure most of you can visualize it.
I would like to see what other kinds of intake systems people are running and how they like them.
Feel free to give me some feedback as well.
Thanks and ride safe

Its not the K&N filter that makes the sound, its the engine and the airbox design. Now just to ask, the holes are on the lid right not the actual airbox. Because that would defeat the purpose of the filter.
Yea the holes are on the front section of the airbox Lid. I have actually make some modifications to it by molding 2 pvc elbows into the holes to keep out the rain. It gives it a ram air sort of look and works great. I will post some pics once I get it all looking good ;)

Has anyone ever has any rain issues with running no airbox lid? I know there isn't much room for the water to get in but that is alot of exposed surface.

nope. If its raining, water getting into my combustion chamber is the last of my worries. Water = just more vapor in your engine. think about it like steam cleaning something like that.

Just got a news letter from TPO parts. They have these new TPO BEAST-4V Velocity Stacks. I wonder if they are worth $250?

I was hoping TPO would come out with a 4V Beast intake that let you replace the airbox with K&Ns like their 2V intake :(
Here's my 2003 620:
