Title: Recommendations for an inexpensive cafe racer style leather jacket
Post by: rideserotta on January 06, 2011, 09:53:28 AM
I'm looking for a cafe style leather jacket that's not going to break the bank. Is this possible? The Belstaffs are great but geeze... $$$

I'd like to stay under $200. Any suggestions?

Not sure what exactly makes up a cafe racer style jacket, but I found a Cortech Coaster Air (perforated - also comes non-perforated) for under $200, brand new (the older version - not the "Coaster II").  It's a very simple retro style jacket - mainly black with some trim options, brass zippers, etc. but with modern protection and features.

Check Extremesupply.com or flea-bay. I've had really good luck with the Tourmaster/Cortech brand and the fit is perfect for me.

check out some of the revit more classic looking jackets, they are straight black leather or textile and really really subdued designs that do not have their names written all over them.

Tourmaster Coaster II as mentioned above. Retro look, and a local rode on rough a 50 mph lowside due to an inattentive driver with just a few scuffs on the jacket.

Good god, what kind of jacket IS this?!?!?! I'd feel slightly uncomfortable jamming this thing in the rear.

When it comes to gear ...you get what you pay for.

You want quality stuff protecting your body from harm.

Don't go cheap !

Better to save up and buy quality , at least $300-400 for a decent leather riding Jacket.

Cowhide  1.1-1.3 mm thick w, CE Shoulder and Elbow protection , snug , comfortable fit.

I have a pair of Tourmaster leather overpants and jacket with about 100,000 miles on them.  They make gear that will last.

Does it have to be leather?  Personally, I think fieldsheer and scorpion, among others, make some really descent textile jackets that are really affordable.  I have 2 heavier fieldsheer textiles for cooler weather that have built-in armor and 1 really light scorpion for hot weather that also has armor.  I didn't spend more than $100 on any one of them.

Try http://www.leatherup.com/. (http://www.leatherup.com/.)   I've seen some of their stuff at bike shows and it looks pretty good.  Nice stuff if on a budget...no idea the long term quality, but it may last long enough for you to save money up for one from one of the more famous labels.
