Title: california duc looking to visit Austraila
Post by: awall41 on January 22, 2011, 10:55:58 PM
The title pretty much says it all! Me and 3 friends are looking to visit for a week, party sight see and hopefully rent a few ducs to ride around. I just have a few questions, how's the august weather in Sydney? Is there good places for young people to party? And how hard is it to get to NZ fo the day?

Thanks for all your help,
-Adam

Hey Adam,

There are so many places to party in Sydney, to list them would take a week. August tends to be a bit windy, it is our 3rd month of winter but that doesn't usually stop people from riding.
As to renting Ducati's I don't know of anyone in Sydney who rents them.  :'(
NZ for a day, ummmmm no. Compare it to traveling to from C.A. coast to mid west or so and back in a day.
It's a 3 hr flight plus getting through customs etc. It's more like a long weekend or at least an overnighter, depends on how much you wanna see and do.

cheers
Matty...

Thanks guys! I will have to plan to take a ride with some of you when we go! I don't want to get stuck doing all the lame tourist stuff.

Hey, no problem. We done a fair amount of tour guide activities in the past for our DMF brothers and sisters.

There's a great choice of awesome roads surrounding Sydney. Make a day trip of it (or even better, do a overnight trip) and you'll get some of our best.

Continue to ask questions and we will assist in the planning.

Do you guys know of any good hotels in the Sydney area? Its hard to pick one when you don't know the area!

How far in or out of Sydney CBD do you want to stay and what's the budget?
Anything within a 10k or 6mile radius of the Harbour you are going to pay pretty well for it but then you are also going to be right where the action is too.

Here are a few in the higher end range.
Sydney Intercontinental
Park Hyatt
Hilton on George St
Blue hotel at Woolloomooloo

You can also look at
Sebal at Pier One
Most anything in Darling Harbour area
Star City casino

If you start with those you can get an idea of price and location.

Long way to come for a week, judging by your NZ question I think you may be undersetimating the size of the island! In a week you can sight see around Sydney and party for sure. I would say it will whet your appetite for more in the future.
August IMO is possibly the worst month in Sydney, as Matty says it is generally very windy. If I recall a few of us got some snow in August last year only 1.5 hrs out of Sydney (Lithgow). In saying that our cold isn't what some other parts of the world may call cold, I note Chicago -5 F overnight, ouch.
There is likely to be someone here happy to take you on a tour of the surrounds, stay in touch.

Of course, we have huge ranges of accomodation here - from youth hostels to the likes of what Matty posted up.

You'd be better to post up a bit about what you want to get up to and what's important.

- is partaying including pubs, live music, clubs etc?
- do you need 24 hour checkin and room service
- do you want to stay within walking distance of the action, or a 10min cab is ok?

For example, if you are your mates are young and looking for all night partaying with like mindeds, its probably better to look around Bondi or Coogee beach, and check out the hostel action (cheaper accom = more to spend on booze). Its a small buss ride to the city for any tourist type action, and you're close to Kings Cross (traditional red light district), Paddington and Newtown and the like for the nightlife.

So after showing my friends the messages you guys have sent we are debating postponing to October or moving the dates up to June.  Between October and June what is the nicest month weather wise?  We said we are probably just going to sight see and party in Sydney and being we are all gamblers we will probably stay in the casino.  Thanks for all your guy's help!

October would be better  mid spring  [thumbsup], not too hot, unless you wan't to go to the beach.
Haven't stayed at the casino but i think you would find it a good place to stay.

I think I'm going to hang around your guys section of the forum.  It seems like you get a ton of posts here.  The southern California one moves soooo slow!  I decided to come during October, by the way. Does anyone here golf?

Mate if you hit Sydney in October ride down to Phillip Island for the MotoGP!! Would make a great ride with the other OzMo's that come down. [moto]

I personally would start in Adelaide but might get shouted down by other OzMonsters  [laugh]

Can't help with the golf. I thought you might be more into surfing being Californian. :D
I think we/ Aussies get more posts on the OZ monster forum because it's more relevant stuff/ bullshit  locally.
And you guys in the US use the General forum and no moto content forum more, rather than state specific forum.  I think that makes sense? :-\

But hey certainly hang around we will get you inducted into the Aussie way of things. :) [evil]

We keep the DMF at the top of google ranking for ducati!

Seriously, we're a "local" club that spans a shit load of area, so we are bound to make some noise. Oh, and you remember we're Australians, right !!!!

Being pretty much a 10 plus hour plan ride away from most other places, we tend to be resilient and self sufficient. Oh, and Australia has been a traditional massive market for ducat, from memory historically at some point in time, there were more ducatis shipped here than anywhere... Ok, that might bullshit, and if not, it was a long time ago......
Title: Re: california duc looking to visit Austraila
Post by: mattyvas on January 25, 2011, 01:49:40 PM
The flight is closer to 14 hours no matter who's plan you go on and yes we the Oz market did keep Ducati going through the 70's and into the 80's we were their biggest export market.

One thing you will have to get a grip on is the Oz style of humour , we tend to be a little dry
and basically be very sarcastic and pay out on eachother .
So if someone is laying a bit of shit on someone it is sort of like foreplay that is in other words an intro
into a friendly banter between mates.
And as  you can see from Brian he defiantly has a firm grip on it ;D
Oh and also the humour  [laugh]
But you would expect that from someone that owns and rides a shiny chromed up HD  [puke] [cheeky] [laugh]

'Gee Day Moite we drink Too Heys Draft'.

Oh, and if we are taking the piss, it means we like you, well that is until you stop shouting [drink] [drink] [beer].

Hi all,

I'm headed to Sydney/Melbourne March 9-21 and looking for some local rec's for dive bars, local cheap street foods and tourist spots to avoid.  Local reef or fw planted fish stores.  Hoping to sneak off for a few days to dive the GBR.  Check out a rugby match, maybe even an aussie rules rugby game.  Do a little surfing (i'm a beginner).

Any and all suggestions, criticisms and laughs appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

Keep some room in your budget for a new Helmet too, the Authorities [leo] here are more than a litte hung up on it being certified to meet Aust requirements.

The is not difference apart from a sticker!

There is the Aus standards sticker but I have never had my helmet checked.
For the amount of time you might get to ride here it's less of a concern IMO.
