Title: Sabin Performance?
Post by: Ducdood on June 11, 2008, 07:25:32 PM
Anyone have any experience with these guys? Good, bad, indifferent? They have $30 dyno runs.

I think fastwin had positive things to say about Sabin performance

Jim Sabin is a former racer and very good at setting up carbed bikes. I hear he's good with PC3s too. Spent many hours on his dyno. Good guy.

I know Rich (Mckraut) has had positive experiences with him. Thats where I was gonna take the S4RS if I got a PCIII, I called and talked to him he was very nice, and seemed very knowledgable.

Let us know how it turns out if you do go [thumbsup].

Lane, if you take it over there let me know how they are, I would love to put the :YD on the dyno just to know.  Maybe he could tune in the PCIII even better than it is.

Sounds good then. I'll give them a shot and let you know.

i used him when i had my S2Rdark...i chopped the airbox, replaced the udder with a spareshack midpipe, and cored the cans, so i needed a PCIII to correct the fuel mix.  Jim worked on it for several hours on a saturday, and couldn't quite get it to where he wanted (i think he may have taken it personally)...my particular PCIII was acting funny apparently.  so i left that evening with a sort-of-tuned PCIII.... but a few hours later (it's like 9:30pm at this point) i'm hanging out with a friend working on a couple beers and relaxing, and i get a freaking phone call from none other than Jim Sabin....who had apparently started the research on some PCIII issues after i had left his place.  he called to tell me he had figured out what was wrong, and wanted me to come in the next day first thing so that he could get it set up.  i came back sunday AM and he tuned it up to his (and my) liking, and then had the nerve to tell me he wasn't even going to charge me his regular rate, because he felt he took too long to tune it.  i refused, and paid him in full.

well worth the money, and as a bonus you get to hang out in the shop and watch him tune it...and there were a few cool projects he was working on when i was there.  anyway, he gets a  [thumbsup] from me.  oh, bring cigarettes...i think he runs on them or something.

What does he charge for tuning your PCIII?

I talked to him today and he quoted $285 for a PC III and $200 for a custom dyno tuned map. To load a standard Dynojet map was free.  I'm going to run it down there and do a $30 dyno run and exhaust sniff. He said he could estimate the potential benefit of further mods from those results and then go from there. That sounded good to me.

So ran the bike down to Jim today for a dyno run. Extremely cool guy and seemed very knowledgeable. Very patiently explained everything he was doing for the setup and then explained the results and what everything meant. The basics (open airbox and stock filter with cored cans) max power = 95.3 h.p., max touque = 60.9. Turns out it is a little lean through the whole range. He thought he could get another 5 h.p. with a PCIII and custom mapping. Five bills for 5 h.p., prolly suffer through with my measly 95 for a while.
