Title: Rugby match
Post by: psidriven on February 16, 2011, 06:18:49 PM
I'm visiting mid march and definitely want to go to a rugby game.  Any pointers to what would be a good match to get tickets to?

Rugby is most often refers to rugby union ... but there is also rugby league. Do you know which you were after?

EDIT: You may not care, but if you are a novice ... league may be easier to follow. Others, I am sure, will disagree.

I've also heard seppos* talk about "Aussie Rules Rugby" which is even more confusing.

In oz we have three (main) forms of oval ball football (or "footy").

Rugby League - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_league (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_league)
Rugby Union - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union)
Australian ("Aussie") Rules Football  - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aussie_rules (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aussie_rules)

Rugby League will be easy to pick up, watch just about ANY game in Sydney
Rugby Union can be tricky if you've not watched it before but a great chance for a drink - watch a Super's  game anywhere you can (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Rugby_season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Rugby_season))
Aussie Rules is commonly likened to Aerial Ping Pong - watch ANY game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

What dates are you here and when are you going to be in different towns? Might be able to help pick a game or two for you.
Cheers,
M

Ruby League - go the Eels!  [thumbsup]
Rugby Union - watch Invictus with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman (contrary to popular belief it is not about Nelson Mandela but about Matt Damon's atrocious Afrikaans accent)  [cheeky]
(G)AFL is for ballet dancers and metrosexuals.

It all depends on where you are and the date you have available.
If you are in brisbane or sydney - NRL (Rugby League)
Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth - AFL (Australian Rules)
and if your desperate - Super 12 (Rugby Union)

From your other thread, I think Sydney is your likely destination. If your near the city, I recommend seeing a home game for either Tigers, Roosters, Eels, or Rabbitohs game (best atmosphere).  IMO best atmosphere is Tigers at Leichhardt Oval, small suburban ground and the most exciting team in the comp!
Go here for the draw -> http://www.nrl.com/telstrapremiership/2011draw/tabid/10978/round/180/default.aspx (http://www.nrl.com/telstrapremiership/2011draw/tabid/10978/round/180/default.aspx)

Let us know where you will be and the date, we will give you the match of the round.
Cheers

Look,
If yagunna watch league you may as well watch the best team on the planet, and that would be St George Illawarra Dragons, won the minor premiership in 2009 then in 2010 did the double minor premiership AND major premiers.

I wouldn't bother too much with a Dragons game.......not a lot of value for money i feel..........
On the other hand, Wests Tigers is the way to go.......an open flowing game is guaranteed....... [thumbsup]
A certain Dragons supporter is very one sided so take that reply with a grain of salt......... [popcorn]   [popcorn]   [popcorn]

Bahaha. So true.

And yes tigers are the way to go. Just think come end of year when the news comes to you that the WestsTigers have won the premiership you will be able to brag to your mates "Hey, thats the team we went and watched". Better yet if you can get to a game at Leichardt oval (one of their many home stadiums - dont get me started) you will also experience local footy at its finest - especially on the hill. Best hot dogs in Sydney and an atmosphere that is rivalled by none.

Caaarn Tiges!!!!

But unfortunately the Mariners would have won the Grand Final by the time he arrives. Besides they have a relatively popular league in the US (the MLS), so it wouldn't be much of a novelty.

Unless he was able to catch a Sydney FC Asian Champions League game ... that could be a real novelty.

EDIT: Seeing those dates while I was typing he could possibly see the Football Grand Final depending on where it is held.

Not the best options available. I would recommend:
Monday 14th Monday night football ANZ Staduin (Olympic Park) - 14th Tigers v Bulldogs, Massive stadium, will not be full so some atmosphere is lost. Out of city, need public transport.
Friday 18th Eels v Panthers, local darby will be a good game, very passionate supporters, public transport too but not really near the city.
Saturday 19th, Tigers v Warriors. Will be a sellout, order tickets now! within 15 min of the City. Without doubt the pick of the options, you can get on the can's and there are heaps of top pubs to go to after the game. Balmain goes off after a Tigers win (which they will  [thumbsup]).
If your fair dinkum about wanting to experience a "Footy game" delay your trip to Melbourne a day.

You can get them here http://www.proticket.com.au/event.asp?eventid=978 (http://www.proticket.com.au/event.asp?eventid=978)I think you will get an E-Ticket that you can print off and scan when you go through the gates.
To experience it, get General Admin tickets, go to one of the local pubs like this one http://www.orangegrovehotel.com/ (http://www.orangegrovehotel.com/) in the arvo and follow the crowd down to the stadium before kick off. Get a few drinks there because it can be hard to get a drink when its full.

if you can't count past 6 see a league game, if you like lots of stoppages by refs who think they're bigger stars than the players watch a union game, if on the other hand you want to see overpaid boys in short shorts running around with no idea how to pass a ball go see an aussie rules game.
personally, i wouldn't waste my time or cash on any of em, hire a bike and find a decent road, ride it till the filth pull you over then show them your foreign licence!

woo hoo!

Get a tigers shirt at the gate, there's always merchandise stands there.

The Panthers have always played like that. One week they are being flogged by teams that they should be flogging, the next week they are unbeatable.
