Title: FNG
Post by: handensco on February 20, 2011, 01:35:56 PM
Hello from New Mexico. I live south of Albuquerque part of the week and north of Santa Fe the rest of the week. I just bought a 2001 900ss that had been sitting for 2 years. I am one of those guys that can not leave well enough alone. I need to do a little work on the Duc. It needs left side upper and middle part of the fairing. I just ordered a service manual. The bike only has 4k on it. I need to get the gas out and a battery for it and am looking at Li.
I also have 82 FXWG 89" balanced and blue printed close ratio 4 speed
80 FLH 106" that is getting put back together
76 r90/6 that is becoming a cafe racer almost done
73 shovel head chopper that is scattered about the country in parts
My first Duc I have ridden this bike but as always needs more power.

Welcome,

And 2nd that your new toy will need some freshening up. Besides the mentioned items, you should get some new fork oil in there, new DOT4 in the brakes and clutch. Check the chain for frozen links or internal rust etc etc.

You obviously know your way around bikes so I won't blather on in detail here.

But, we've got a good tech section should you feel you need it.

I do a lot of my own work. I have a lift and am comfortable in the garage. Just never had a Duc befor and am waiting on the manual so I know where everything is. I appreciate the leads and the help. I always get little nrevous startine something new. But if you have the manual and some back up on line you can do almost anything.
Thanks for the welcome

Just make sure you use metric tools  ;D

Save for the different valve train, there's nothing deeply different from a Duc to any other bike. The 900 power plant is a pretty simple tank of an engine. Two valves per, air+oil cooled and dead simple in it's bones.
